Eugene had never felt that devastated in a long time. He felt like a naughty child who got punished by being left behind at home. It was the first time in his almost thirty years of life getting scolded by his dad for being stubborn—even when his dad was doing it while trembling.
He knew his dad was doing it out of concern. Eugene could see how Ian pushed himself to be stern and told his son off. He knew how scared Ian was when he stepped out of the house to go to the trial, even with Robert accompanying him.
And yet, Eugene still wanted to throw a tantrum and lie down in front of the door until his dad allowed him to come, even if he had to bring a vomit bag everywhere.
Thankfully, Eugene was feeling too sick to do something like that, so all he could do was watch his dad's figure leave the living room and then cry when he heard the car drive away.
