Chapter 31 - Chapter 33 – The Lies Between Us

No one spoke.

The silence stretched across the cavern like a drawn blade.

The First Hunter stood unmoving, his white robes untouched by the cold rising from the abyss. His eyes remained fixed on Liuxue, patient enough to wait for her judgment.

"I did not kill your mother."

The words lingered in the air.

Liuxue searched his face for hesitation. For guilt. For triumph.

She found none.

That unsettled her more than if he had smiled.

"You denied something I never accused you of," she said quietly.

A faint smile crossed the First Hunter's lips.

"You were going to."

"I still might."

"I know."

Yining stepped between them, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword.

"I am tired of everyone speaking in riddles. Either tell us the truth or leave."

The First Hunter looked at her with mild curiosity.

"You are brave."

"I am exhausted."

"For some people, those are the same thing."

Yining frowned.

"I am choosing to take that as a compliment."

The Starborn man never lowered the silver flames surrounding his hands.

"You should leave while you still can."

"And abandon my purpose?" the First Hunter asked.

"I have done enough of that already."

The words were soft, but something inside them felt heavy.

Liuxue noticed it.

Regret.

Not performed.

Real.

The ancient being beneath the Veins spoke again, its voice rolling through the cavern.

"Regret does not erase blood."

The First Hunter lowered his eyes for a brief moment.

"No," he answered.

"It does not."

Liuxue felt the tension between them. It was older than kingdoms. Older than the throne. Whatever had happened between these two beings had left scars that had never healed.

She stepped forward before anyone could stop her.

"I want answers."

"You deserve them," the First Hunter replied.

"Then start with my mother."

The Hunter looked at the abyss before returning his gaze to her.

"Her name was Lian."

The name struck Liuxue like a forgotten melody.

Lian.

Without warning, another fragment of memory surfaced.

Warm hands brushing through soft black hair.

A woman humming a lullaby she could no longer remember.

The scent of rain.

Then panic.

Running.

Someone shouting.

The memory shattered before she could hold onto it.

Liuxue staggered.

The Starborn man caught her arm.

"What did you see?"

"My mother's name."

Tears blurred her vision.

"I remembered her name."

The Keeper watched silently.

"The seal is weakening," they murmured.

"No," the Starborn man corrected.

"It is opening."

Liuxue steadied herself.

"What happened to Lian?"

The First Hunter answered immediately.

"She refused to surrender you."

The cavern became still.

"The heavens discovered your birth long before you could speak," he continued. "They declared that no child born outside the Laws of Origin could be allowed to live."

Yining stared in disbelief.

"They wanted to kill a child?"

"They wanted to prevent what they feared."

"They feared a baby?"

"They feared what she would become."

Liuxue wrapped her arms around herself.

"So my mother ran."

"Yes."

"Was she alone?"

The First Hunter hesitated.

"No."

Liuxue noticed.

"You left something out."

He met her eyes.

"There was someone with her."

"Who?"

His gaze shifted toward the Starborn man.

The silence answered before words ever could.

Liuxue slowly turned.

The Starborn man stood perfectly still.

His expression had emptied.

"No," Liuxue whispered.

He closed his eyes.

"I was there."

Yining looked from one to the other.

"You knew her mother?"

"Yes."

Liuxue felt anger rising inside her.

"You never told me."

"I could not."

"You would not."

His shoulders lowered.

"Both."

The First Hunter spoke quietly.

"He was her guardian."

Liuxue's heart stopped.

"My mother's?"

"Yes."

The Starborn man finally opened his eyes.

"They assigned me to protect Lian long before you were born."

"Did you?"

His voice broke.

"I tried."

The ancient being beneath the Veins growled.

"You failed."

"I know."

The words echoed through the chamber.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Only full of guilt.

Liuxue stepped closer.

"Tell me everything."

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

"Lian discovered something hidden within the oldest archives. She learned that the heavens were not eternal."

The Keeper's head snapped up.

"Impossible."

"It is true," the Starborn man said.

"She found records older than the Celestial Courts. Records proving that the heavens inherited their authority from something else."

The ancient eye in the abyss remained silent.

Watching.

Listening.

"Lian believed the truth had been buried," he continued.

"And then she met your father."

Liuxue's breath caught.

"My father."

The words felt strange on her tongue.

"Who was he?"

The Starborn man's expression darkened.

"I never learned his true name."

The First Hunter spoke.

"Almost no one did."

Liuxue frowned.

"Then what do you know?"

The Hunter answered carefully.

"He was not from the heavens."

"I guessed that."

"He was not from any realm."

The cavern fell silent again.

Liuxue stared.

"What does that mean?"

The Keeper whispered the answer before anyone else could.

"He came from Beyond."

The word itself seemed to shake the ancient stone.

Yining looked completely lost.

"I feel like everyone else knows what that means."

The Keeper swallowed.

"Beyond is not another realm."

"It is what existed before realms."

Liuxue felt a chill crawl across her skin.

"My father came from... before creation?"

"No," the ancient being beneath the Veins said.

"He came from outside it."

Those words changed everything.

If they were true, then Liuxue was not simply unusual.

She was the child of two worlds that should never have touched.

The First Hunter continued.

"When your parents chose each other, they unknowingly violated the oldest law in existence."

"What law?"

"That the Outside must never become part of creation."

Liuxue's thoughts raced.

"So I..."

"You are the first."

"The first what?"

The Hunter looked at her with quiet sorrow.

"The first bridge."

The title settled over her like a weight.

Bridge.

Not weapon.

Not queen.

Not monster.

A connection.

The bells of heaven began ringing again.

Only this time, they sounded frantic.

The ancient being lifted its voice, and for the first time, true urgency filled every word.

"They have found the Veins."

A violent explosion shook the cavern.

The tunnel behind the First Hunter collapsed inward as blinding golden light poured through the broken stone.

Dozens of armored figures emerged from the dust.

Unlike the divine enforcers Liuxue had faced before, these warriors wore black armor etched with burning crimson runes.

Each carried a spear forged from condensed starlight.

At their center walked a woman with silver eyes and hair as white as snow.

She stopped the moment she saw Liuxue.

Then she smiled.

"You have your mother's eyes," she said softly.

Liuxue felt the blood drain from her face.

The Starborn man's voice became barely a whisper.

"The High Executioner..."

The woman's smile widened.

"And after all these years," she said, raising her spear, "I have finally found the child who escaped."
