I watched Lyra pull ancient texts from her satchel, her hands shaking as she spread them across the war table.
"It's all here," she said, her voice hollow. "Every account of fully awakened tamers from the last thousand years. And they all end the same way."
I leaned over the table, scanning the faded text. Most of it was written in Old Draconic, but I'd lived long enough to read it fluently.
The tamer Marissa of Thornhaven reached full awakening in the year 1247. Without a permanent bond, her power consumed her within four days. The resulting explosion killed seventeen dragons and over two hundred humans. The entire village was reduced to ash.
My blood went cold.
"How long has this been known?" I demanded.
