Chapter 72 - Suit Upgrade!

*[SKILL PROGRESS: FORCED RESERVE ACCESS - 79%]*

By the final cycle, sweat pouring off him and his vision swimming at the edges, Bruce gripped a weighted bar loaded far beyond what his baseline could move and pulled.

For three seconds, something in him simply gave permission it had never given before.

The bar came up. His muscles screamed in protest, fibers tearing in ways his regeneration would need real time to repair, but it came up.

He dropped it and collapsed against the rack, chest heaving, arms trembling uncontrollably.

*[SKILL UNLOCKED: OVERDRIVE]*

*[DESCRIPTION: ACTIVE, WILLED ACCESS TO PHYSIOLOGICAL RESERVES BEYOND CURRENT ENHANCED BASELINE. ESTIMATED SAFE DURATION: 30 TO 90 SECONDS DEPENDING ON INTENSITY. SIGNIFICANT PHYSICAL STRAIN AND RECOVERY TIME REQUIRED FOLLOWING USE. NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR BASELINE STRENGTH. A TEMPORARY, COSTLY SUPPLEMENT TO IT.]*

Bruce lay on the training floor for a long moment, staring at the ceiling of the replica cave, three new notifications glowing faintly in the corner of his vision.

'Not new powers,' he thought, forcing his breathing to slow. 'Just what the System was always capable of giving me, if I pushed hard enough to earn it.'

He thought about Deadshot's knife finding the gap in his old suit. About the forty seven percent survival calculation NEXUS had given him going into that fight. Numbers that had felt unacceptable at the time.

They felt different now.

He exited the dimension the next morning, no time lost in reality, and went straight to the fabrication bay to check on the suit.

---

The Gen 2 suit hung on its rack, fully assembled for the first time.

Bruce walked around it slowly, running a hand along the nanofiber weave where it caught the light in a way the old Kevlar never had, matte black but with a faint texture underneath, almost like scales if you looked closely enough.

"Final assembly complete as of six hours ago," NEXUS reported. "All systems tested individually. This will be the first time everything functions together as a complete unit."

"Specs confirmed?"

"Weave stops rifle caliber rounds at close range without full penetration, though impact bruising should still be expected. Adaptive plating hardens in approximately four milliseconds upon detecting impact force above a set threshold, then returns to flexible state within a second afterward."

"Exoskeleton lattice amplifies your current baseline strength output by an additional eight percent without restricting range of motion. Cowl sensor suite includes thermal imaging, sonar pinging for use in low visibility or smoke, and a real time threat overlay fed directly from my analysis."

Bruce reached out and touched the cowl, tracing the sensor housing built into what looked, from the outside, like nothing more than pointed ears and a smooth black mask.

"It doesn't look like it does all that."

"That was intentional, given your specifications. You wanted intimidation without visible technology, so criminals underestimate what they're actually facing."

"Good work."

He suited up slowly, testing the weight distribution, the flex of the joints, the way the cowl's display flickered to life the moment it settled into place. Everything responded exactly the way the pocket dimension prototypes had promised it would, no lag, no friction, no compromise between protection and mobility.

"How do I look," Bruce asked, glancing at his reflection in the fabrication bay's dark window.

"Considerably more advanced than spandex," NEXUS said.

Bruce actually laughed. "I walked into that one."

"You did."

He spent the next hour running the suit through active drills, sprints, jumps, strikes against the heavy bag, testing whether the exoskeleton lattice's amplification felt natural or fought against his own movement. It felt seamless, an extension of muscles that were already stronger than they'd been a week ago.

"I want a field test," Bruce said. "Something real. Low stakes, but real."

"I have a candidate," NEXUS said. "A weapons cache is being consolidated tonight at a warehouse in the industrial district, restocking effort by a supplier trying to fill the vacuum left after your earlier operations gutted the East End's arms pipeline. Six armed guards confirmed on site, moderate security, no indication of anything beyond standard criminal capability."

"Perfect. Small enough to be safe. Real enough to matter."

"I would remind you that your body has undergone significant physiological change in the past forty eight hours. Fatigue and strain from the skill training sessions have not fully cleared."

"I know my limits, NEXUS. That's the point of testing tonight. I need to know what this body and this suit can actually do together before Bane forces the question."

NEXUS didn't argue further, though the pause before her next response carried the same quiet disapproval Bruce had learned to recognize.

---

The warehouse sat two blocks from the docks, unremarkable from the outside, its windows painted black. Batman approached from the rooftops, cape settling around him in the new suit's silence, no fabric noise at all where the old cape used to catch wind audibly.

He crouched on an adjacent roof and let the cowl's thermal overlay paint the building's interior in soft orange shapes. Six guards, exactly as NEXUS predicted, spread across the main floor around stacked crates.

'Time to see what I'm actually working with,' Bruce thought.
