Chapter 32 - Breakthrough Formula, A.R.I.A

The drive back to Gotham took most of the night. Bruce spent it reviewing his plans, triple-checking calculations, preparing mentally for what was coming. Other students slept or chatted quietly. He worked.

Selina sat a few rows up, occasionally looking back at him. When their eyes met, she'd quickly turn around. Bruce smiled to himself. That was definitely something to explore later, once he'd handled the more pressing matters.

They arrived at Gotham Academy at three AM. Alfred was waiting in the Rolls-Royce, patient and professional as always.

"Welcome back, Master Bruce."

"Thanks, Alfred. Let's go home. I need to get some things done."

"Of course, sir."

The drive to Wayne Manor was quiet. Bruce stared out the window at Gotham's dark streets, the city he'd sworn to protect and change. It looked the same as always: Gothic architecture, shadowed alleys, the weight of crime and corruption pressing down on everything.

'You're running out of time,' the city seemed to whisper. 'Are you ready?'

'I will be,' Bruce answered silently. 'Very soon, I'll be ready.'

Wayne Manor loomed ahead. Home. Training ground. The place where Bruce Wayne would finally break through the last barrier between him and peak human perfection.

He just had to survive the process first.

They pulled up to the manor. Bruce grabbed his bag and headed straight inside, not toward his bedroom but toward the basement levels. The hidden sections of the manor that Alfred knew existed but rarely entered.

"Master Bruce," Alfred called after him. "Will you be needing anything? Shall I prepare a meal?"

"I'm good, Alfred. Get some rest. This might take a while."

"Very well. I'll be in my quarters if you need me."

Bruce continued down into the depths of Wayne Manor. Past the wine cellar, past the storage rooms, to a section of the basement that looked like ordinary foundation walls. He pressed his palm to a specific stone, and a biometric scanner hidden in the mortar analyzed his handprint.

Click.

A section of wall slid open silently, revealing a staircase leading down another level. Bruce descended into his private laboratory, the place where he'd conducted his research for the past nine years.

Lab 3 was pristine and high-tech, filled with equipment that would make most university research departments jealous. Medical monitors, chemical synthesis stations, computer banks, biological analysis tools. Everything Bruce had needed to develop the Breakthrough Formula.

And in the center of the room, a specialized medical chair with restraints and monitoring equipment attached.

"ARIA," Bruce called out. "Activate."

The lights came on fully. Screens around the room flickered to life. A calm, feminine voice spoke from the speakers.

"Good evening, Bruce. Welcome back. I trust the trip to Kansas was productive?"

ARIA.

Adaptive Response Intelligence Algorithm.

Bruce's personal AI, built over the past six years using knowledge he'd gained from studying cutting-edge computer science and neural networks. She wasn't sentient, but she was incredibly advanced, capable of monitoring complex systems, running calculations, and assisting with research.

"Productive enough. ARIA, status check on the Breakthrough Formula. Is everything ready?"

"All components synthesized and stored at optimal temperature. Medical monitoring systems calibrated. Emergency protocols loaded and ready. I must note that the projected pain index for this procedure is extreme. Are you certain you wish to proceed?"

"I'm certain. I don't have much time. That means I don't have the luxury of reaching peak human naturally anymore."

"Understood. Shall I prepare the injection?"

"Give me ten minutes. I need to change and do a final review."
