"That's right. The newly discovered Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution is Pidgeot, the final evolved form of Kanto's regional bird Pokémon."
"Today, Kalos League Elite Four member Wikstrom held a touring lecture on the spirit of chivalry in Lumiose City. During the exhibition match held after the lecture, a Trainer from Kanto's Pallet Town named Ash had his Pidgeot perform Mega Evolution..."
Xerosic explained.
"Ash from Pallet Town? You mean the famous Star Trainer Ash, the one who is currently well-known throughout the Kanto region?" Lysandre asked.
"That's him." Xerosic nodded. He then asked, "Boss, what should we do next? Should we send people to seize his Pidgeot and the items used for Mega Evolution?"
"No. He isn't an ordinary Trainer, but the number-one seeded talent of the Kanto League. Who knows how many pairs of eyes are secretly watching him while he's here in the Kalos region? And now is not the time for Team Flare to expose its identity."
"Next, send someone to make contact and collect the 'Mega Evolution wave' energy released when Pidgeot undergoes Mega Evolution. That will be enough." As he spoke, Lysandre rubbed the signet ring on his right thumb.

Before this, whether in Kalos's academic community or among Pokémon researchers in other regions, everyone had assumed that Mega Evolution was a phenomenon exclusive to Kalos, much like Alola's Z-Moves and the Galar region's Gigantamax phenomenon.

Across the battlefield, Wikstrom did not dare hesitate for even an instant. After all, he had personally experienced just how terrifying the power of Mega Evolution could be.
"Aegislash, use 'Fury Cutter'!!" Facing the descending storm of blade-like attacks, Wikstrom once again employed the same tactic, ordering Aegislash to counter with Fury Cutter.
"Whoosh...."
With its blade drawn, Aegislash swung its sword repeatedly. Sword aura surged in every direction, and the cold, fierce sword qi formed an airtight barrier around Aegislash, shielding it completely.
"Bang, bang, bang, bang...."
The same clash as before unfolded once again—the web of wind blades against the barrier of sword qi. But this time, the evenly matched stalemate did not occur.
Wikstrom had deliberately suppressed Aegislash's strength to the peak of Gym Leader level, placing it in the same tier as Pidgeot in its normal state. But now that Ash's Pidgeot had Mega Evolved, its strength had surged all the way to the quasi-Elite level.

Steel-type Pokémon possessed exceptional defensive capabilities along with excellent resistances. What was more, Aegislash had previously used 'Power Trick' to swap its Attack and Defense capabilities.
But 'Razor Wind' was a Normal-type move. Even when it struck the highly defensive, highly resistant Aegislash, it could still deal ×1 normal damage.
And after Mega Evolution, Pidgeot's strength had skyrocketed, especially with its Special Attack and Speed receiving enormous boosts. Within the same span of time, Pidgeot could unleash a greater number of attacks with astonishing power.
When attacks of this caliber rained down upon Aegislash, even a Pokémon as formidable as it was could not withstand such overwhelming attacks and damage.
