✨ Chapter 45 – When the Shadows Broke
The world exploded into chaos.
Shadows surged from the forest in thick, writhing waves—twice as many as the first strike. Some tore across the ground like ink spills, others crawled along the walls like living tar.
The barrier cracked in three places.
"WEST—BREACH POINT ONE!"
"EAST LINE FAILING!"
"CENTRAL SIGILS DESTABILIZING!"
Ariana's heart pounded as her moon-fire flared bright across her arms.
She stood at the center of the courtyard's formation, surrounded by the Hybrid Division.
Kai was at her back, wolf aura vibrating with lethal intent.
"Ariana," he said, voice low and steady, "stay with me."
She nodded once.
A boom echoed from the western wall.
Zane shouted:
"They're hitting that one FIRST!"
Ariana's wolf whispered:
"Pattern. Listen."
A faint hum vibrated across the courtyard.
Then a weak flash of red.
Then the shadows near the WEST shifted direction.
Ariana gasped.
"HYBRIDS—WEST!" she screamed.
They turned just in time.
A massive wave of corrupted beasts—twisted wolves, crawling root-creatures, shadow-wrapped humanoids—charged toward them.
Kai moved first.
He shifted partially—fur rippling along his arms, gold eyes glowing with wolf-light.
"Stay behind me," Kai growled.
But Ariana stepped forward instead.
"No. Fight with me."
Her silver fire ignited, swirling up her arms like a rising storm.
Kai stared.
"Ariana—"
Too late.
The creatures lunged—
And Ariana unleashed her moon-fire for the first time.
A beam of silver-white shot from her hands, slicing across the battlefield like a blade of light.
The shadows shrieked—
dissolving instantly where the fire touched.
Students gasped.
Rylan yelled, "HOLY—SHE'S A NUCLEAR WARHEAD!"
Zane whispered, "No… that's moon-fire… pure lunar magic…"
Calen muttered, "We're not losing tonight."
Kai's jaw clenched, watching Ariana with awe—and something deeper.
Something dangerous.
Something possessive.
Ariana staggered slightly; the power was intense, overwhelming.
Kai grabbed her waist to steady her.
"Don't overdo it," he whispered.
Ariana swallowed.
"I can handle more."
Kai shook his head sharply.
"Ariana—moon-fire burns YOU too."
Suddenly—
A monstrous figure burst from the left flank, leaping directly at Ariana.
It was bigger than the others—
a corrupted deer-like beast with branching roots for horns and a hollow chest cavity glowing red.
Kai roared.
"ARIANA—!"
He lunged, shifting more deeply—claws glowing gold as he slammed into the creature. They tumbled, ripping earth apart.
Ariana's heart stopped.
"KAI!"
Rylan raced to her side.
"Go to him! I got your flank!"
Ariana sprinted after Kai.
The beast had pinned him.
Kai snarled, struggling, fangs bared, eyes blazing.
Ariana lifted her hands—
Silver fire surged—
But her wolf whispered sharply:
"Too much. Too close. He will burn too."
Ariana gasped and redirected the attack at the creature's weak point: the hollow cavity.
Moon-fire speared through it.
The monster let out a dying shriek and crumbled.
Kai rolled free, panting, forehead touching the ground.
Ariana threw herself beside him.
"Kai! Are you hurt?"
Kai's chest rose hard.
"I'm fine," he rasped.
"Are you hurt?"
Ariana blinked.
"Kai—YOU were the one under that thing—"
Kai grabbed her face gently, golden eyes wild.
"The only thing that matters is that you're safe."
Ariana froze.
Seraphina, fighting near them, yelled:
"NOT THE TIME TO FLIRT! MOVE!"
Ariana pulled Kai up.
"Come on—we have to get back."
They sprinted back to the formation.
Lira's Pattern Saves Them
The moment they returned to the courtyard, Ariana froze.
Another hum.
Another flash.
The shadows shifted again—
—but this time toward the EAST.
Ariana screamed:
"EAST! MOVE EAST!"
The hybrids pivoted instantly.
Kai shouted orders.
Rylan shot flames.
Calen cast frost barriers.
Zane multiplied into three psychic forms.
A massive corrupted serpent lunged from the east, mouth glowing.
"SHIELD!" Ariana yelled.
Seraphina flicked her charm ribbons—
and a dome of gold snapped into place, blocking the serpent's strike.
Rylan blasted it.
Calen froze its tail.
Kai and Zane finished it together.
Ariana gasped.
"Lira was right! They're following a sequence!"
Kai nodded, out of breath.
"We follow her pattern—we survive!"
Ariana shook, exhilarated and terrified.
Her wolf whispered:
"Good.
Clever.
Fight."
The Academy's First Loss
But the battlefield changed.
More creatures poured in.
Students fought bravely—
but some were knocked down, some dragged back, some overwhelmed.
A horrific scream echoed.
Ariana spun.
A Guardian student—young, maybe fifteen—collapsed under the claws of a corrupted beast. His shield shattered.
Ariana's breath stopped.
"No—no, no—"
Kai pulled her close.
"Ariana—stop—don't look—"
A professor rushed in, too late.
The boy fell.
Ariana trembled violently.
"He's just a kid," she whispered.
Kai clenched his fists.
"This is war," he said softly.
"But we fight so no more kids fall."
Ariana swallowed back tears.
Her moon-fire surged again—
stronger, hotter, fueled by grief.
She stepped forward.
"HYBRIDS," she cried.
"MOVE WITH ME!"
They obeyed.
She raised her hands—
Silver fire erupted in a wide arc.
A wave of light blasted through the front line of corrupted creatures.
For a moment—
the battlefield quieted.
Students stared.
Kai whispered:
"Ariana… you're glowing."
Ariana looked down.
Her silver aura had expanded—large, radiant.
Her wolf whispered:
"Progress.
Not full yet.
But soon."
Ariana inhaled shakily.
"We can't let fear control us," she said loudly.
"We hold this line!"
Students roared in agreement.
And the battle raged on.
The Shadows Retreat
After what felt like hours—but was only thirty minutes—the creatures began to fall back.
Their numbers thinned.
Their movements slowed.
Then—
A piercing whistle echoed through the forest.
The corrupted beasts froze.
Then retreated.
Not defeated.
Not destroyed.
Ordered.
Zane cursed.
"They're pulling back early."
Seraphina frowned.
"That wasn't a random attack. It was a test."
Kai grabbed Ariana's hand gently.
"That was just a taste," he whispered.
Ariana swallowed hard.
"My wolf agrees."
Aster ran into the courtyard, breathless.
"Ariana! The Moonbeast—!"
Ariana froze.
"What about it?"
Aster whispered:
"It heard the fighting."
Ariana felt her heart drop.
"It's awake enough to LISTEN?"
Aster nodded, terrified.
"It's listening to you."
Ariana trembled.
Kai pulled her into his arms without hesitation.
"It will NOT have you," he growled.
Ariana clung to him, mind racing.
Tomorrow night would be the real battle.
Tonight was only the opening move.
And Rebirth had proved one horrific truth:
They were ready.
