Chapter 175 - The Decadent Guardian

"What about the Tesseract?" Shen He countered. "And what about the others Loki controlled? Thor, there are laws on Earth. If he continues to refuse to cooperate, we can't keep him for long."

"Exactly." Tony immediately understood Shen He's meaning. "In just the last two days, Loki has killed over eighty agents and twenty civilians. The countries here are demanding we hand him over."

"He, he…" Thor, the invincible God of Thunder, was utterly speechless.

Because he had no justification. His brother, Loki, had committed unforgivable crimes on Earth – that was a fact.

"Thor." Shen He stood up, looking at Thor. "I understand your feelings for your brother, and I also understand that he's just a pawn of the person behind the scenes. But, we also don't have the right to forgive his crimes on behalf of all humanity. People's anger is constantly building up. You need to be prepared; we can't protect him for much longer."

That was also the truth.

If the American government insisted on following the law, Chaldea's detention of Loki wouldn't hold up.

After all, they're only a private organization at the moment.

"Loki will be judged by Asgard," Thor finally clenched his fist.

Shen He wasn't surprised by Thor's decision.

This was a characteristic of heroes in the entire Marvel universe. Even Captain America, who was hailed as a "pure hero," could break the law for Bucky, for the sake of protecting the heroes' personal freedom.

So neither Tony nor Steve said anything about Thor's decision.

They weren't children.

"In that case, there's only one way," Shen He murmured a few words, "Diplomatic immunity."

Even in modern society, where everyone is supposed to be equal before the law, inequality is still everywhere. Ordinary people who break the law in other countries, if there's no extradition treaty, will naturally be punished according to the laws of that country. However, some special individuals enjoy diplomatic immunity, such as diplomats or representatives of national institutions stationed in the local area.

If Thor, as the heir to Asgard, requested diplomatic immunity, it would also be in accordance with legal provisions.

Understanding what Shen He meant, Thor agreed with almost no hesitation.

His thought process was always relatively simple; Shen He had helped him a great deal, so he trusted Shen He as well.

"Is it not possible for Asgard to send a diplomatic team?" Shen He asked.

"The Bifrost is not yet repaired." Thor shook his head, a hint of embarrassment in his expression. "It took all of my father's accumulated dark energy just to send me here, and I must find Jane as quickly as possible."

"Is that so? Then there's no other way." Shen He seemed a little troubled and stated a long-planned condition, "Then let Chaldea negotiate on behalf of you, Asgard."

"Wouldn't that cause you to bear the blame for Loki?" Thor was a little moved.

Loki's reputation on Earth had reached the point where everyone wanted to punish him, yet Chaldea was going to protect him and send him back to Asgard.

Leaving aside the difficulty, just the people's anger would damage Chaldea's reputation.

"I'm not doing this entirely for your sake," Shen He waved his hand. "Loki believes he's an adopted child, that he didn't receive love from your father. But we know very well that your father, Odin, has always regarded him as his own child, and you see him as your own brother. I also have to consider whether Odin's age and health can bear the grief of losing a child again. The world's peace needs the King of Asgard."

"Shen He," Thor was genuinely moved.

He hadn't even thought of that, yet Shen He was even more concerned about Odin's health than he was.

"Also, about Jane," Shen He raised his hand, interrupting him again, and handed him a sturdy communicator. "My wife, Jeanne, possesses certain abilities to find people. I'll ask her to help pinpoint Jane's location for you, but you'd better find her quickly. I have a feeling that the crisis Loki brings this time might be very troublesome."

"I understand."

Thor picked up his hammer, turned around, took two steps, and then returned, giving Shen He another bear hug.

"Thank you very much, Shen He. Chaldea will always be a friend of Asgard."

"Alright, get going."

Shen He waved his hand, directly teleporting the muscular man to the front of the gate.

Everything he had said to Thor was true.

However, Chaldea could also benefit from this. The greatest benefit was that in the eyes of ordinary people and international powers, Chaldea could be seen as an intermediary for alien civilizations. This would further establish Chaldea's authority in this field.

"Tony, how long can we stall?" Shen He turned to Tony.

"Rhodey said a maximum of three days before the military prepares to take forceful measures." Tony repeated what Rhodey had told him.

He had also obtained some information through his own methods. Behind this matter, some people had their eyes on Loki's scepter. They believed it was an alien weapon that could control the human mind. Whoever possessed it would have the equivalent of a nuclear weapon in the information war. After all, no one knew if their country's leaders or their trusted subordinates would be controlled.

These people are truly relentless in their pursuit of self-destruction.

Even in the original storyline, Thor taking the Tesseract was just Fury acting on his own.

Even if they really obtained the mind weapon, weren't they afraid of triggering a Third World War?

It seemed that another very significant role of S.H.I.E.L.D. was to stop these national powers from shooting themselves in the foot, something Shen He had overlooked before.

"Proceed as planned," Shen He didn't think too much about it. "It's enough that we've been dragged down once by having to push the blame for the alien invasion onto them. We must seize the true initiative, after all, there are even bigger crises waiting for us later."

"No problem, they provoked us this time," Tony shrugged.

Regarding screwing over those high-and-mighty congressmen, he had no psychological burden whatsoever.

When you've done business to a certain degree, those so-called congressmen and officials are just that in their eyes.

Throughout the entire day, the events unfolded exactly as they had imagined.

The Guardians had always operated within the bounds of the law, and the virtual reality company's business was also legitimate. Furthermore, with Stark Industries, a major star corporation, standing in front of them, they couldn't do anything to Chaldea.

But this time, it seemed like they wanted to vent all the pent-up anger from before.

Major media outlets, various senators, almost like a concentrated bombardment, were condemning Chaldea's actions, and they spoke with great conviction.

From Chaldea privately taking away Loki, who was listed as a wanted criminal, to Chaldea illegally possessing more than two current fighter jets, and openly equipping weapons to fly over the important city of New York, they even brought up some small matters that the Guardians had protected the city from, such as damaging someone's roof, scaring away a little old lady's cat, and even Spider-Man leaving spider silk on the glass.

It has to be said that a portion of the public is very easily swayed by public opinion.

In just one day, when the Guardians went out to fight criminals, they encountered protests demanding that they leave the city. Spider-Man was even pelted with eggs, and even Captain America had people coming out to criticize his outdated suit and promotional posters.

This was a very big blow for the Guardians, who had always been praised.

After all, they were just a group of young people.

沈 He received a message from Steve the next day, stating that the Guardians didn't want to go out to work.

"As expected, none of these people can be called heroes yet," Shen He sighed.

Even though it felt like a huge pain, he had to go. The Guardians were crucial to a key plan for Chaldea.

When he arrived at the Guardians' residence, he saw them gathered together. To be precise, the others were comforting Crystal, whose eyes were red.

"What's wrong?" He strode over.

"Shen He." Skye stood up indignantly upon seeing Shen He. "Those people went too far!"

"You should call me 'Commander', Skye. I'm not Coulson."

Shen He first lightly reprimanded Skye, then took the tablet from Pietro.

The article above is titled "This World Doesn't Need Superheroes."

It feels a bit familiar.

In short, the entire piece uses various angles, appealing to emotions and reasoning, to reveal the negative impacts superheroes have on the world. The main target of attack is Crystal, that somewhat naive and romantic young girl. Well, because she doesn't really understand the common sense of human society on Earth, she does indeed cause a lot of trouble.

"This article," Shen He looked at the young man and woman staring at him, "is actually not bad."

"Sir! How can you say that!" Skye seemed a little agitated.

Because the article almost completely disparaged them, endlessly belittling everything they do.

"That's the truth." Shen He's expression didn't reveal what he was thinking. "This article can be said to have revealed the truth about superheroes. As it says above, Steve can become a hero not because of how much merit he has, but because political propaganda at that time needed him to become a hero. Your reputations are also the result of our propaganda."

"Then what about what we've done?" Skye found it hard to accept. "We've helped so many people!"

"Are you doing this to become heroes?" Shen He asked directly.

"But, but…" Skye opened her mouth, seemingly wanting to retort, but not knowing what to say.

"You guys." Shen He shook his head. "You're with a real hero every day, and you don't even learn anything. Steve." He looked at Steve, who was standing silently to the side. "Did you go to the battlefield to become a hero?"

"I didn't have the ability to be a hero when I enlisted." Steve showed a helpless expression. "I just wanted to be an ordinary soldier and help my country, but they wanted me to perform, saying it would help more people. Even when I 'sacrificed' later, I was just fulfilling my duty and mission as a soldier, just like all the soldiers who sacrificed themselves at the time."
