Chapter 284 - The Stone Corridor Becomes a Classroom

The trapdoor closed above them with a soft thud.

Fluffy's breathing faded.

Below, the first room waited.

Devil's Snare spread across the floor and walls, its vines thick, damp, and quietly eager. The plant shifted when Dumbledore and Theodore landed, then froze as if realizing the visitors were not panicking.

Dumbledore brushed dust from his sleeve.

"I believe Professor Sprout would be offended if we damaged it."

"Then do not struggle," Theodore said.

The vines tested his ankle.

He looked down.

The vine released him.

Dumbledore's eyes twinkled. "It appears even the plant has developed judgment."

"It has survival instinct."

They crossed the room without using fire.

Theodore placed a leaf talisman near the root mass. Yimu Divine Light slipped into the plant, not changing it, only sharpening its role.

Calm.

That was the first lesson.

Devil's Snare did not punish weakness. It punished panic. A person who thrashed fed it. A person who relaxed survived.

Useful.

The room accepted the new rhythm quickly.

Above the detention room, far away through stone and wards, Voldemort felt the first obstacle stir.

His attention sharpened.

The Stone.

He knew that route.

He had prepared for it.

A plant. Keys. A chessboard. Potions. A mirror.

Childish protections, arranged by sentimental professors.

Yet now they sounded different.

Less like barriers.

More like questions.

Snape sat in the detention room chair across from Quirrell, watching his face.

"You noticed something."

Quirrell's fingers tightened on the spoon.

Voldemort remained silent.

Snape smiled thinly.

"Predictable greed does have its uses."

Quirrell flinched.

The thorn warmed.

Snape leaned back.

"Eat."

The second chamber glittered with wings.

Hundreds of keys flew overhead, silver, bronze, iron, old and new, all darting through the air with sharp little flashes. At the far end waited the locked door.

Dumbledore looked up.

"Professor Flitwick was rather proud of this one."

"He should be."

Theodore raised a hand.

The keys did not stop flying.

They changed pattern.

A storm at first glance. A system on second. A test on third.

Observation.

Patience.

Knowing which movement mattered and which movement only existed to distract.

Theodore found the correct key in three breaths, but he did not take it.

Instead, he guided a thin line of Fuxi resonance through the flight.

The keys adjusted.

Their paths became harder to read for anyone chasing blindly, easier for someone who truly watched.

Dumbledore approved. "A fairer test?"

"A sharper one."

"That is not always the same thing."

"No."

They passed through after the correct key dipped politely into Dumbledore's hand.

The chess chamber came next.

Ron would have loved it.

Giant black and white pieces stood across the board, waiting in silence. Their carved faces turned slightly when Dumbledore and Theodore entered.

Theodore stepped onto the edge of the board.

The pieces did not attack.

Dumbledore glanced at him. "Do you play?"

"Yes."

"Do you enjoy it?"

"Against good players."

Dumbledore's smile deepened. "A diplomatic insult."

Theodore ignored him and looked at the board.

This room was different.

The plant tested panic.

The keys tested observation.

Chess tested sacrifice, strategy, and trust in position.

Theodore did not need to move the pieces. He needed to make the room remember what made chess useful to Hogwarts.

Not domination.

Not victory at any cost.

A move mattered because it changed the whole board.

That lesson could trap Voldemort nicely.

He placed Wutu Divine Light beneath the center squares. The board grew heavier, more stable. Then Yimu Divine Light threaded between the pieces like quiet thought.

The white queen lowered her head slightly.

Dumbledore watched the change.

"What happens if Tom reaches this room?"

"He will try to force a win."

"And the board?"

"It will make every forced move expensive."

Dumbledore looked at the queen again.

"Good."

In the detention room, Voldemort's patience cracked.

The Stone's route was changing.

He could feel it through Quirrell, through old desire, through the mark that still answered the false door. The path he remembered was being rewritten into something less obedient.

He pushed.

The mark under the chair pulsed.

Quirrell gasped.

Snape's wand was in his hand at once.

"No."

Voldemort hissed through Quirrell's mouth, "You cannot keep me here forever."

Snape's face was cold.

"Perhaps. But I can keep you here through dinner."

The detention room accepted the rule.

No leaving during dinner.

The mark dimmed slightly.

Filch, outside the door, heard the talisman warm and nodded with professional satisfaction.

The next room smelled of troll.

Even without a troll.

Dumbledore paused at the doorway.

"I had forgotten how memorable this chamber was."

"The troll is gone."

"The smell has remained ambitious."

Theodore did not bother answering.

This obstacle was simpler. A brute-force barrier. A reminder that sometimes danger did not ask clever questions. Sometimes it swung a club.

Still useful.

Theodore folded a small Wutu seal into the floor.

Impact.

Weight.

Consequence.

If Voldemort tried to bypass every lesson by power, this room would carry that habit forward into the next traps.

The room accepted the seal like stone accepting stone.

The potion chamber came after.

Seven bottles stood in a row, the fire already sleeping in the walls. Snape's logic puzzle remained neat, cruel, and precise.

Dumbledore looked amused.

"Severus never could resist making intelligence uncomfortable."

Theodore studied the bottles.

This room tested clarity under pressure. Not courage. Not luck. Thought.

He did not alter Snape's puzzle. That would be rude and unnecessary.

Instead, he linked the room to Quirrell's thorn.

If Voldemort tried to drag Quirrell through this path, the puzzle would not only ask which potion to drink.

It would ask who was choosing.

That mattered.

A choice made by Voldemort through Quirrell's hand would taste wrong to the room.

A choice made by Quirrell himself would taste different.

Theodore smiled faintly.

Snape would appreciate that.

Probably while pretending not to.

The final chamber waited behind the black flame.

The Mirror of Erised stood alone.

Dumbledore grew quiet.

Theodore did too.

The mirror did not show the Stone to them. It showed desire.

That made it dangerous tonight.

Not because of Voldemort alone.

Because below Hogwarts, something had already learned to ask what people wanted badly enough to open a lock.

Dumbledore approached the mirror slowly.

The surface reflected him first.

For a breath, his face softened with grief Theodore did not ask about.

Then Dumbledore straightened.

"What do you see?" Theodore asked.

"A warning," Dumbledore said.

Honest enough.

Theodore stepped closer.

The mirror turned toward him.

He saw Hogwarts from above, roots around towers, lake sealed, corridors alive, children noisy and safe.

Behind that, a black door remained closed.

Behind that door, something stopped smiling.

The image was pleasant.

Too pleasant.

Theodore looked away.

"Still dangerous."

"Yes," Dumbledore said quietly.

Theodore placed the smallest mark here.

Not a seal.

A question.

Desire could not be blocked by force. That only made it grow claws. It had to be made visible, named, and then denied the right to drive the hand.

The Mirror already knew that lesson.

Theodore only connected it to the rest.

Plant.

Keys.

Chess.

Troll.

Potions.

Mirror.

Calm, observation, strategy, consequence, clarity, desire.

A small school inside the school.

A corridor that taught before it protected.

The Wuzhuang foundation accepted the chain.

Far below, the black door pulsed once.

Theodore felt it.

Not alarm.

Recognition.

The Stone route had joined the repair.

Dumbledore exhaled slowly.

"That should keep Tom interested."

"And contained."

"If he comes."

"He will."

Neither of them needed to pretend otherwise.

They returned through the chambers without disturbing the tests further.

Fluffy woke when they reached the top.

The right head looked disappointed that Theodore still refused to be licked.

Dumbledore closed the door behind them and reset the lock.

For a moment, the corridor was quiet.

Then footsteps sounded.

Hermione came around the corner with Harry and Ron.

All three stopped.

Dumbledore looked at them.

Theodore looked at them.

Ron looked at the locked door, then at Theodore.

"We were not going in."

Hermione added quickly, "We noticed the corridor's talisman changed color."

Harry said nothing, which was wise because he had clearly brought the willow branch.

Dumbledore sighed, though not very convincingly.

"Curiosity remains one of Hogwarts' strongest renewable resources."

Hermione lifted her chin. "Something changed in there."

"Yes," Theodore said.

Ron pointed at the door. "Is the giant dog still there?"

"Yes."

"Good. I mean bad. But good."

Harry looked at Theodore. "Is Voldemort going to try for the Stone?"

"Yes."

That sobered all three.

Hermione's face tightened. "Then why keep it here?"

"Because now the corridor can teach him wrong lessons."

Ron stared. "We are giving You-Know-Who homework?"

Theodore smiled.

"In a manner of speaking."

Ron turned to Harry. "I hate that I understood that."

Dumbledore looked down the corridor, then back at them.

"You are not to enter this room."

Hermione opened her mouth.

Dumbledore raised a hand.

"No clever interpretation of that sentence. No emergency exploration. No verifying Professor Snow's work. No following suspicious noises unless a professor is with you."

Ron looked relieved.

Hermione looked personally attacked.

Harry looked like he would follow suspicious noises anyway, but at least felt guilty about it.

Theodore added, "Your job is still the school."

Hermione's expression shifted.

"The house rhythms."

"Yes."

Harry nodded slowly. "Keep people steady."

Ron sighed. "Argue for safety."

"Within reason," Hermione said.

Ron ignored that part.

That night, Quirrell felt the Stone route settle into place.

So did Voldemort.

The desire in him sharpened until Quirrell could barely breathe.

A body.

A stone.

A mirror.

A school that had become a lock.

Voldemort whispered, "Soon."

Quirrell's hand trembled around his spoon.

Snape, sitting across from him with a book open, did not look up.

"If you are going to make ominous statements, at least vary the vocabulary."

The thorn warmed.

Quirrell gave a weak laugh.

The mark beneath the chair pulsed, reaching toward the false door and the Stone route at the same time.

Theodore watched from the Room of Requirement.

Good.

Let Voldemort look at the Stone.

Let the dream below listen to that hunger.

Let Hogwarts prepare the lesson.

Outside, the castle argued, ate, studied, cleaned, plotted pranks, solved puzzles, and sang badly in one Hufflepuff corner.

The black door slept under all of it.

For now, that was enough.
