The surface of the planet did not know the warmth of Node 06.
Above the subterranean basin of Sector 4, three thousand meters above the salt-crusted vaults of Sub-Level 8, the world was a jagged wasteland of howling white squalls and jagged, black iron spires.
This was the Upper Spire of the High Directorate.
Here, high above the frozen clouds, heated glass domes enclosed lush botanical gardens, marble arcades, and soaring towers of polished brass and reinforced obsidian.
Inside the High Council Chamber of the Directorate, the temperature was kept at a meticulous, artificial twenty-two degrees Celsius.
A soft, golden ambient light emanated from chandeliers suspended by heavy steel chains, illuminating a massive round table made of petrified black wood.
Around the table sat seven figures.
Each wore the crisp, immaculate white-and-silver uniforms of the surface cartels, adorned with gold rank epaulets and high-density bio-monitoring collars.
At the head of the table sat Archon Valerius—the senior military representative of the High Directorate.
His hair was silver, combed back with military precision, and his cold gray eyes were fixed on the center of the table.
Floating above the petrified wood was a three-dimensional holographic projection of Sector 4's subterranean topography.
Or rather, what was left of it.
The holographic map was flashing with harsh, flickering red warning icons.
[SECTOR 4 COMMUNICATION LINK: TERMINATED]
[SEVENTH PURGE FLEET DROP-POD STATUS: 12/12 UNRESPONSIVE]
[CLASS-4 DREADNOUGHT 'IRON SENTINEL': CRITICAL SYSTEM FAILURE / SIGNAL LOST]
[TOTAL TROOP TELEMETRY: 0 UNITS ACTIVE]
A heavy, suffocating silence gripped the grand council chamber.
The only sound was the faint, rhythmic clinking of Archon Valerius's white gloved fingers tapping against his crystal glass.
"Read the transmission again, Director Thorne," Valerius said, his voice quiet, flat, and devoid of emotion.
Across the table, Director Thorne—a sharp-featured woman in charge of subterranean resource extraction—adjusted her optical monocle, her fingers trembling slightly as she pulled up the final encrypted burst.
"The transmission was received eighty-four minutes ago, Archon," Thorne said, her voice tight.
"It came from Alderman Vance's private quantum telegraph right before his terminal went dark."
"Vance reported a Class-A tech-heresy outbreak in Sub-Level 8."
"He claimed an unregistered citizen had breached the ancient Lunar seals and brought Node 06 back online."
"Node 06?" Councilor Vane, an elderly man representing the surface energy monopolies, scoffed loudly. "Node 06 has been dormant for forty years! The thermal grids in Sector 4 were operating at less than twelve percent capacity!"
"They were operating at twelve percent because we kept them at twelve percent!" Thorne shot back, turning her sharp gaze toward him.
"A cold sector is a compliant sector!"
"When Vance reported the thermal spike, Captain Kren was dispatched with the Seventh Purge Fleet to enforce standard containment protocols."
"Twelve drop-pods. Forty-eight heavy exosuits. And one Class-4 Siege Dreadnought."
Archon Valerius raised his gloved hand slightly, and the table instantly fell silent once more.
"And what was the result of Captain Kren's containment protocol?" Valerius asked, his eyes never leaving the flashing red holographic map.
Thorne swallowed hard, touching her control pad to cycle the telemetry log.
"Total casualty," she whispered.
"The Purge Fleet descended into the primary ventilation shaft."
"Within forty minutes of landing, all kinetic telemetry ceased."
"The primary bulkheads above Sector 4 were forcefully sealed from the inside."
"And five minutes later, the Dreadnought's core telemetry reported a catastrophic structural fall into the unmapped lower salt strata of Sub-Level 8."
Councilor Vane leaned forward, his face pale with sudden disbelief.
"A Class-4 Siege Dreadnought?" Vane gasped. "That machine carries four-inch composite kinetic plating! A subterranean labor militia armed with rusted pickaxes and scrap rifles couldn't scratch its paint!"
"They didn't use pickaxes," Thorne said grimly.
She tapped her console again, bringing up a degraded, noise-heavy audio recording recovered from the Dreadnought's final black-box burst.
The speakers in the ceiling crackled to life.
STATIC... SHRRRRK...
"This is Vanguard Alpha... internal scramblers failing..."
"Acoustic interference across all bands..."
"The floor... the floor is giving way!"
"Selar units! They're not wild! They're being routed!"
"The Mark... he's holding the Mark—"
BOOM!
The audio recording cut off into high-frequency static before dying completely.
The council chamber felt suddenly colder.
The word hung in the air like a phantom, heavy and terrifying.
The Mark.
Archon Valerius slowly stood up from his high-backed chair, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the holographic table.
"The Selar units were being routed," Valerius repeated softly, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"The ancient constructs did not attack the locals."
"They attacked our Purge Fleet."
"Archon," Councilor Vane stammered, adjusting his silk collar as sweat broke out along his hairline. "This... this must be an exaggeration."
"A malfunction in Captain Kren's targeting arrays!"
"The Selar constructs are mindless drone remnants left over from the Great Cooling!"
"They cannot be commanded by a miner!"
"A miner, no," Valerius said, walking slowly toward the massive floor-to-ceiling viewing bay at the edge of the chamber.
Outside the reinforced glass, the violent surface blizzards howled over the jagged iron spires of the Upper City.
"But a Class-0 Access Carrier can."
Valerius looked out at the frozen horizon, his gloved hands clasped tightly behind his back.
"Thirty years ago, when the High Directorate secured the surface and pushed the survivors into the subterranean mining basins, we knew the risk."
"We knew the ancient Lunar terraforming machinery buried in Sub-Level 8 was not dead."
"It was merely sleeping."
"We rationed their heat."
"We starved their tech."
"We kept them shivering in the dark so no one would ever have the power or the curiosity to dig down into Vault 8-B."
Valerius turned around, his gaze locking onto every council member in the room with absolute, terrifying authority.
"And now, a boy has woken it up."
Director Thorne leaned over the table, her hands flat against the petrified wood.
"Archon, if news of this reaches the other subterranean sectors—if Sector 3 or Sector 7 learn that Sector 4 successfully destroyed a Vanguard Purge Fleet and reclaimed Node 06..."
"The entire subterranean labor grid will erupt into full-scale rebellion," Thorne finished, her voice shaking.
"Our energy supplies will drop by eighty percent within a week."
"The surface spires cannot survive without the salt and mineral flow from the lower sectors."
"Then we do not allow news to spread," Councilor Vane urged, banging his fist on the table.
"Seal all communication relays between the sectors!"
"Deploy orbital kinetic strikes down the main shafts!"
"Collapse Sector 4 entirely! Bury them under ten million tons of rock!"
"Fool," Valerius spat, his voice laced with cold contempt.
"If we collapse Sector 4 with kinetic strikes, we destroy Node 06."
"Do you know what happens if Node 06 suffers a catastrophic thermal overload while connected to the deep salt strata?"
"It triggers a chain reaction that will blow out the structural pillars of the entire northern subterranean basin."
"The Upper Spire itself would collapse into the salt void."
Councilor Vane shrank back into his seat, his mouth opening and closing without making a sound.
"We cannot use orbital carpet strikes," Valerius continued, walking back to the holographic table.
"And we cannot send standard Vanguard infantry down into an environment where a Class-0 Carrier controls the acoustic dampening network."
"Then what do we do?" Thorne asked quietly. "The Seventh Purge Fleet is gone."
"Our advance scout units are paralyzed."
"And every minute Node 06 remains active, the boy's control over the ancient grid grows stronger."
Archon Valerius reached out and touched a glowing silver key hanging from a chain around his neck.
He inserted the key into the central console of the petrified table and turned it ninety degrees.
CLICK.
A new holographic window expanded above the table, displaying a classified file sealed under black-tier Directorate security.
[ACCESSING BLACK-TIER FILE: PROJECT DREAD-STRIKER]
[UNIT TYPE: PHASE-ADAPTIVE CYBORG SPEC-OPS]
[DEPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION: ARCHON LEVEL ONLY]
[STATUS: 3 UNITS READY FOR DEPLOYMENT]
"The Phase-Strikers," Director Thorne gasped, her eyes wide with shock. "Archon... those units use experimental quantum-shielded neural cores!"
"They aren't operated by open-cycle hydraulic suits!"
"They don't rely on surface thermal radiators!"
"They are surgical hunters," Valerius said coldly.
"They will not descend down the primary ventilation shaft."
"They will enter through the ancient, unmapped drainage conduits of Sub-Level 9."
"They will bypass the miners."
"They will bypass the barricades."
"And they will bring me the boy's left arm."
Valerius tapped the confirmation icon on the screen.
[PROJECT DREAD-STRIKER: DEPLOYED]
[TARGET: DANIAL VANCE / CLASS-0 MARK CARRIER]
[MISSION PARAMETERS: TERMINATE CARRIER / RECOVER NODE 06 AUTHORIZATION CORE]
Valerius looked around the silent table, his face as hard as the ice outside the glass dome.
"The Directorate built this city on the bones of the old world," Valerius said, his voice echoing through the grand hall.
"We will not let a rat in the salt take it from us."
"Dismissed."
