Late July
Kai's internship was supposed to end the third week of August, but two weeks before the scheduled end date, his supervisor called him into a meeting.
He came home that night looking shell-shocked.
"What happened?" I asked immediately, abandoning the dinner I was making.
"They offered me an extension. Through December. Part-time during the school year two days a week instead of five."
"That's amazing! Kai, that's huge!"
"I know. I just I wasn't expecting it. They said my work has been exceptional, that they want to keep me on the team through the next phase of development."
Maya emerged from her room, sensing the energy shift. "What's going on?"
"Kai got offered an internship extension. Four more months."
"That's great!" She hugged him. "You're basically a real employee now."
"Not quite, but close." He still looked dazed. "They're even offering a small raise. Not much, but enough that it would actually help with expenses."
"So you're taking it, right?" I asked.
