Chapter 211 - Asia Cup 2012 - 5

Date: March 18th, 2012.

Location: Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka.

Event: Match 6, Asia Cup 2012 (India vs Pakistan).

Attendance: 26,000 (Capacity), but watched by 1.5 Billion on TV.

The air in the stadium was thick enough to slice with a knife. It wasn't just humidity; it was the suffocating weight of history.

India vs Pakistan.

The Green versus The Blue.

For fans on both sides of the border, this wasn't sport; it was a matter of national pride.

The stands were a riot of color. Flags waved furiously. Drums beat a war rhythm. In the commentary box, the tension was equally palpable.

Pre-Match Commentary (Ravi Shastri & Ramiz Raja):

Ravi Shastri: "It doesn't get bigger than this. The streets in Mumbai are empty. The streets in Lahore are empty. Everyone is glued to their screens. India is riding high on confidence after chasing 324 against Bangladesh. Pakistan is fresh and dangerous. Ramiz, thoughts?"

Ramiz Raja: "Pakistan needs to target the youngsters. Yes, Deva has a record, but today is a new day. Our bowling attack with Ajmal and Gul is potent. If we win the toss we bat first and put 280 on the board, India will feel the pressure."

The Toss:

Misbah-ul-Haq flipped the coin. MS Dhoni called Tails.

It was Heads.

Misbah: "We will bat first. It's a big game. Runs on the board are crucial. The pitch looks dry, it might turn later."

Dhoni: "We would have bowled. The dew factor is massive here in the second innings. We know what we need to chase. The team is unchanged."

Openers: Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed.

Bowlers: Praveen Kumar and Vinay Kumar.

India started with swing. Praveen Kumar moved the ball both ways, troubling Jamshed with his gentle outswingers. Vinay Kumar bowled tight lines, cramping Hafeez for room.

However, the Pakistani openers were cautious. They respected the good balls and nudged the singles, wary of losing wickets early in a high-pressure game.

Over 5: Hafeez drove Vinay Kumar through covers. It was a crisp shot, the first sign of aggression. FOUR.

Over 8: Jamshed pulled a short ball from Praveen. It wasn't timed perfectly, but it beat the mid-wicket fielder. FOUR.

By the end of the Powerplay (10 Overs), Pakistan was 45/0. They hadn't lost a wicket. They were setting a platform for a big total, frustrating the Indian fielders.

Dhoni looked at the scoreboard. Then he looked at his Vice-Captain.

Bowler: Siddanth Deva.

Striker: Mohammad Hafeez (Batting on 22).

Deva marked his run-up. It was long. He wanted to generate maximum momentum.

The crowd buzzed. They knew what was coming.

Ball 11.1: Deva to Hafeez

Deva ran in. His rhythm was perfect. He hit the crease hard.

He didn't look for swing. He looked for the base of the stumps.

156.4 kmph.

A laser-guided missile.

Hafeez saw the ball late. He tried to bring his bat down. It was a blur.

The ball bypassed the bat. It bypassed the pads.

CRASH.

The middle stump was ripped out of the ground and cartwheeled towards the keeper.

Commentary (Ravi Shastri): "BOWLED HIM! CASTLED! WHAT A START! 156 Klicks! Hafeez didn't even see it! The stump is out of the ground! Siddanth Deva announces himself in the derby with a thunderbolt!"

WICKET (Hafeez 22).

Azhar Ali walked in. The technician.

Deva walked back to his mark. He was breathing fire.

Ball 11.2: Deva to Azhar Ali

Deva changed the grip. Outswinger.

He ran in. 148 kmph.

He pitched it on a good length, just outside off.

Azhar Ali, tentative on his first ball, poked at it to defend.

The ball moved away late.

Snick. (A faint sound).

The ball flew to MS Dhoni. Dhoni caught it.

Deva went up. "HOWZAT!"

Dhoni went up.

The umpire, Steve Davis, stood still. He shook his head. Not Out.

Deva ran down the pitch to Dhoni.

"Nick," Deva said breathlessly. "I heard it. A faint edge. Definite noise."

Dhoni hesitated. "It was faint, Sid. Are you sure? We only have two reviews."

"100%," Deva said, his eyes burning. "Review it, Mahi bhai. It is a out."

Dhoni looked at the confidence in the youngster's eyes.

He made the T-signal. DRS Review.

The Replay:

The third umpire checked the front-on spin. No gap between bat and ball.

Snickometer: A spike appeared as the ball passed the edge.

Decision: OUT.

Commentary (Ramiz Raja): "He's gone! A golden duck for Azhar Ali! Deva was convinced, and the technology backs him up. Two in two! Pakistan is crumbling! What a spell this is turning out to be!"

WICKET (Azhar Ali 0).

Score: 45/2.

Hat-trick Ball.

Ball 11.3: Deva to Younis Khan

Younis Khan, the veteran, walked out to face the hat-trick ball.

Deva moved the field.

"Two slips," Deva commanded. "Short leg. Gully."

He crowded the bat.

Deva ran in. The crowd was screaming.

He bowled a fast yorker.

Younis Khan was ready. He dug it out solidly back to the bowler.

Dot Ball.

Deva stared at Younis. Younis stared back.

The rest of the over was a maiden.

Figures: 1-1-0-2.

Over 13: Deva continued.

He bowled with hostility.

Over 15: Deva to Nasir Jamshed.

Jamshed was set on 28.

Deva went round the wicket. He bowled a bouncer.

Jamshed hooked. Top edge.

Ishant Sharma at fine leg took the catch.

WICKET (Jamshed 28).

Score: 65/3.

The spinners Ashwin and Jadeja tightened the screws on Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal.

Deva was rested.

Pakistan crawled to 130/4 (Misbah Run Out).

Over 35: Deva Returns

Dhoni brought Deva back to break the partnership between Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi.

Over 36: Deva to Afridi

Afridi wanted to impose himself on the game. He stepped out, looking to blast Deva down the ground.

Deva saw him coming. He rolled his fingers over the ball—a deceptively slow knuckleball.

Afridi checked his shot at the last moment but still punched it firmly straight back towards the bowler.

It was traveling fast at head height.

Deva didn't flinch. In his follow-through, he casually stuck out his right hand and plucked the ball out of the air like a ripe fruit.

He didn't even stumble. He just held the ball up, staring at a stunned Afridi.

Commentary (Ravi Shastri): "CAUGHT AND BOWLED! STUNNER! He just plucked that out of thin air! Afridi smashed that, but Deva's reflexes are superhuman! One hand, no fuss. The Boom Boom show ends!"

WICKET (Afridi 15).

Over 38: Deva to Umar Gul

Fast yorker.

LBW.

WICKET (Gul 2).

Five Wickets for Siddanth Deva.

Figures: 9-2-38-5.

Pakistan's tail didn't last long. Vinay Kumar wrapped it up.

Pakistan All Out: 210.

(Overs: 44.2).

@PakCricket_Sad: "210? On this pitch? We are doomed. Deva is a cheat code. 5 wickets? That catch of Afridi was insane! 😭"

---

Target: 211.

Required Rate: 4.22.

It was a modest total. But it was India vs Pakistan. Pressure does funny things.

Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma walked out.

Sachin, fresh off his 100th hundred, looked relaxed. Rohit, the newly minted opener, looked focused. He hadn't yet earned the world's trust, nor the fan base. He was still the talented player trying to cement his spot at the top.

Over 1: Umar Gul to Sachin

Sachin drove the first ball through covers. FOUR.

Commentary (Gavaskar): "That sound! The Master is in the mood. That should settle the nerves."

Over 4: Aizaz Cheema to Rohit

Rohit stepped out. He pulled a length ball over mid-wicket.

SIX.

Commentary (Shastri): "Effortless! He just picked the length and deposited it. That's the talent we talk about. Rohit Sharma is looking good today."

They didn't just chase; they cruised.

Sachin rotated the strike, playing the anchor.

Rohit played his shots. He cut Ajmal. He drove Hafeez. He was playing with a lazy elegance that frustrated the Pakistani bowlers. They couldn't rush him.

Over 15: India 85/0.

Over 20: India 110/0.

Rohit reached his 50. Sachin reached his 50.

The Pakistani shoulders dropped. The fielders were silent.

Partnership: 124 runs.

Over 23: Saeed Ajmal to Sachin

Ajmal bowled the doosra.

Sachin tried to cut. It spun back sharply.

Bowled.

WICKET (Sachin 52).

Sachin walked off to a standing ovation. He had done his job.

Virat Kohli walked in at No. 3.

Score: 124/1.

Needed: 87 runs.

Kohli joined Rohit.

"Let's finish this, Ro," Kohli said. "Don't give them a sniff."

Over 30: Shahid Afridi to Kohli

Kohli whipped a leg-break through mid-wicket. FOUR.

Next ball. Inside-out drive. FOUR.

Kohli was in a hurry.

Rohit was eyeing a century. He was on 85.

Over 35: Umar Gul

Rohit pulled for FOUR.

He drove for FOUR.

He moved to 98.

Over 36: Ajmal

Rohit pushed a single. 99.

Kohli took a single.

Rohit on strike.

Ajmal tossed it up.

Rohit drove to long-off.

Single.

CENTURY FOR ROHIT SHARMA.

100 off 110 balls.

His first century against Pakistan.

Commentary (Manjrekar): "A magnificent hundred! He was given the responsibility to open, and he has grabbed it with both hands. This innings will give him immense confidence. A star in the making!"

India needed 10 runs.

Kohli hit Cheema for a boundary.

Rohit finished it with a pull shot for FOUR.

Final Score: India 211/1 (38.4 Overs).

Rohit Sharma: 105* (118 balls).

Virat Kohli: 40* (35 balls).

Sachin Tendulkar: 52 (60 balls).

Result: India won by 9 wickets.

Post-Match Presentation:

Ravi Shastri: "A comprehensive demolition! India wins by 9 wickets! Man of the Match... for a fiery 5-wicket haul that broke the back of the Pakistan batting... Siddanth Deva."

Deva collected the trophy.

Shastri: "Sid, 5 wickets against Pakistan. You seem to love playing them."

Deva: "It's always special playing Pakistan, Ravi bhai. The atmosphere pushes you. The ball was coming out nicely today. That first wicket of Hafeez set the tone."

Shastri: "And that catch of Afridi? You made it look easy."

Deva: "Just reflexes, Ravi bhai. He hit it hard, I just stuck a hand out and it stuck."

Shastri: "Rohit's century?"

Deva: "World class. I told you, he belongs at the top. He made it look easy. I didn't even have to pad up."

Tweets Post-Match:

@HarshaBhogle:

"Clinical. Professional. Ruthless. India didn't just beat Pakistan; they outclassed them. Deva with the ball, Rohit with the bat. The future is here."

@ShoaibAkhtar:

"Disappointing from Pakistan. We were scared of the short ball. Deva bowled with pace we haven't seen in a long time. That catch to dismiss Afridi... magical. Well played India."

@FunnyCricGuy:

"Pakistan bowling strategy: Don't take wickets so Deva doesn't come out to bat. 200 IQ move. 😂 Deva didn't even wear pads today! #IndVsPak #FearTheDeva"

"You won! And you didn't even have to bat! My Jinx Protocol worked. You're welcome. Also, that catch was hot. 😳"

Deva smiled at the text in the dressing room.

Headache:You won! And you didn't even have to bat! My Jinx Protocol worked. You're welcome. Also, that catch was hot. 😳

Me:The Protocol worked. You are now the official team luck charm. Can I come home now?

Headache:One more game. Then you can come home.

Deva laughed. The mother of all battles was won. The Asia Cup was within reach.

Back in the studio, the atmosphere was jubilant. The graphics played a montage of Deva's bowling spell—stumps flying, batsmen hopping, and that incredible one-handed return catch.

Gaurav Kapur: "What a performance. If there were any doubts about India's bowling depth without Zaheer Khan, they were answered today. 5 wickets for 38 runs. Wasim Akram, you've seen a lot of fast bowling. Talk us through that spell."

Wasim Akram: "It was hostile, Gaurav. That first ball to Hafeez... 156 kmph. I haven't seen Deva a bowl at those speed since World cup. Maybe ever. He bowled the perfect line. He didn't give them an inch."

Sunil Gavaskar: "And the intelligence, Wasim. The knuckleball to Afridi. Deva knew Afridi would come hard at him. He held the ball back, changed the pace by 30 clicks, and Afridi was just pawing at thin air. To have that presence of mind in an India-Pakistan game... that is special."

Wasim Akram: "And that catch! Reflexes of a cat! The ball was traveling at bullet speed. He made it look like he was picking an apple from a tree. That broke Pakistan's spirit completely."

Gaurav Kapur: "We have to talk about the batting too. Rohit Sharma. Promoted to open, and he scores a century against Pakistan."

Sunil Gavaskar: "The Hitman is born. I will say it now. Opening the batting gives him time. He isn't rushed. He played with such elegance today. And notice the partnership with Sachin. The Master guiding the Apprentice. India has found their new opening combination for the next decade."

Wasim Akram: "Pakistan looked scared. That's the honest truth. They were scared of Deva's pace, and then they were demoralized by Rohit's class. India is operating on a different level right now."

Gaurav Kapur: "A 9-wicket victory. Dominance doesn't get clearer than this. India marches on to the Asia Cup Final, and they have sent a message to the world."
