Chapter 208 - Asia Cup 2012 - 2

The Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka was vibrating with the lingering energy of the Indian innings. 352 for 3. The scorecard looked like a typographical error. While the ground staff rushed to prepare the pitch for the second innings, the digital world was in a state of absolute meltdown.

The transition from the classical elegance of the Rohit-Kohli partnership to the brutal, apocalyptic finishing of Deva and Dhoni had broken the internet.

@HarshaBhogle: "I have just witnessed two different eras of cricket in one innings. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli painted a masterpiece. Siddanth Deva and MS Dhoni then took that masterpiece and set it on fire. 115 runs in 43 balls! Unfathomable! #INDvSL #AsiaCup"

@CricCrazyJohn: "Rohit Sharma as an opener is a revelation! 106 runs of pure, unadulterated laziness and elegance. He had an extra second to play Lasith Malinga! The Hitman has officially arrived. 🏏🔥"

@KingKohliFC: "108 off 120! Virat Kohli is the undisputed at one down. The pacing of that innings was perfection. And that celebration! 🦁👑"

@ShaneWarne: "The 212-run stand between Rohit and Kohli was beautiful. But that death batting... wow. Siddanth Deva 66* off 22 balls? Dhoni 45* off 21? That is illegal in 50 countries. Poor old Malinga didn't know where to hide! 😳"

@CricketStatsGuru: "STAT: 115 runs in the last 7.1 overs is the highest run rate ever achieved by an Indian pair in the death overs of an ODI. Deva's strike rate of 300.00 is a mind-boggling anomaly. 🤯📊"

@SL_CricketFan: "353 to win. We need Dilshan to play the innings of his life. And Sanga. And Mahela. Actually, we need a miracle. 😭🇱🇰"

@BCCI_Insider: "The decision to push Rohit up the order and hold Deva back for the death... whoever made that call in the boardroom deserves a raise. Tactical perfection from the management. 🧠💼"

@TrollCricket: "Sri Lankan bowlers going back to the dressing room like... [Insert meme of a burning house]. Deva and Dhoni showed absolutely no mercy. RIP economy rates. 😂🔥"

Target: 353

Required Run Rate: 7.06

Chasing 353 under the Dhaka lights was a colossal task, but Sri Lanka possessed one of the most experienced top orders in world cricket. Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan walked out to the middle. The dew had settled heavily on the outfield, making the ball glisten under the halogen lamps.

MS Dhoni handed the new ball to Praveen Kumar. The strategy was clear: find swing early, or brace for impact.

Over 2.3: Praveen Kumar to Tillakaratne Dilshan

Praveen pitched it up, hoping for away movement. The ball went dead straight. Dilshan didn't hesitate. He went down on one knee and brought out his trademark shot.

[Commentary - Ravi Shastri]:"THE DILSCOOP! First boundary of the chase, and it's the famous Dilscoop! Praveen pitches it up, and Dilshan just uses the pace to flip it straight over MS Dhoni's head! One bounce into the fence!"(FOUR)

Over 3.1: Irfan Pathan to Mahela Jayawardene

Irfan angled the ball across the right-hander. Mahela waited for it, playing incredibly late.

[Commentary - Sunil Gavaskar]:"Oh, what a velvet touch! Irfan provides the width, and Mahela opens the face of the bat at the very last microsecond. It races past the diving gully fielder down to the third-man boundary. Class from the captain!"(FOUR)

Over 4.4: Praveen Kumar to Tillakaratne Dilshan

Praveen, frustrated by the lack of swing, dragged his length back. It sat up perfectly.

[Commentary - Sanjay Manjrekar]:"Into the stands! Dilshan rocks back and pulls that with absolute disdain! It's a flat, hard hit over deep square leg! Sri Lanka showing they are not going down without a fight!"(SIX)

Over 4.5: Praveen Kumar to Tillakaratne Dilshan

Praveen overcorrected, bowling full and wide outside off.

[Commentary - Harsha Bhogle]:"Slashed away! Back-to-back boundaries for Dilshan! He throws his hands at the width and crashes it over point! The Indian pacers are struggling with the wet ball here!"(FOUR)

Over 6.2: Irfan Pathan to Mahela Jayawardene

Irfan tried a slower ball. Mahela picked it from the hand, stepped out, and drove on the up.

[Commentary - Ravi Shastri]:"Glorious cover drive! Mahela Jayawardene dances down the track, gets to the pitch of the slower ball, and caresses it through the covers. Virat Kohli chases it, but the outfield is like glass!"(FOUR)

Over 8.5: Vinay Kumar to Tillakaratne Dilshan

Vinay Kumar, introduced as first change, bowled a poor ball down the leg side.

[Commentary - Sunil Gavaskar]:"Whipped away! A gift from Vinay Kumar, drifting onto the pads. Dilshan just tickles it fine, and it races away to the fine-leg boundary. Easy pickings for a batsman of his caliber."(FOUR)

Over 9.4: Vinay Kumar to Mahela Jayawardene

Vinay bowled a good length delivery on middle stump. Mahela stepped back and punched it.

[Commentary - Sanjay Manjrekar]:"Punched off the back foot! That is timing personified! Mahela bisects mid-on and mid-wicket with a shot that had no backlift, just pure placement!"(FOUR)

Powerplay 1 Score: Sri Lanka 64/0.

The Sri Lankan openers had weathered the new ball and set a phenomenal platform. The required rate was hovering around 7.2, keeping them well in the hunt. MS Dhoni looked concerned behind the stumps; the dew was making the ball difficult to grip.

Realizing pace was traveling to the boundary, Dhoni turned to his premier spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, immediately after the Powerplay restrictions eased.

Over 11.2: R. Ashwin to Tillakaratne Dilshan

Ashwin bowled the carrom ball. It pitched on middle and skidded straight on instead of turning. Dilshan, looking to cut, found himself cramped for room.

[Commentary - Harsha Bhogle]:"EDGED AND TAKEN! The bowling change works magic for MS Dhoni! Ashwin bowls the carrom ball, Dilshan plays for the off-spin, and gets a thick outside edge! Dhoni takes a sharp, fast catch behind the stumps! India has the breakthrough!"

WICKET (Dilshan 38). Sri Lanka 72/1.

Kumar Sangakkara walked in at Number 3. The two greatest Sri Lankan batsmen of their generation were now at the crease.

Over 13.5: Ravindra Jadeja to Kumar Sangakkara

Jadeja fired the ball in flat. Sangakkara used his feet beautifully.

[Commentary - Ravi Shastri]:"Shot! Sangakkara shimmies down the track, gets to the pitch, and lofts Jadeja gracefully over extra cover! One bounce and over the ropes. He makes it look so ridiculously easy!"(FOUR)

With the partnership building and the score crossing 100, Dhoni tossed the ball to his Vice-Captain. Siddanth Deva came into the attack in the 16th over. He wiped the wet ball vigorously with his towel.

Over 16.3: Siddanth Deva to Mahela Jayawardene

Deva steamed in. He didn't bowl his express 150 kmph pace. Instead, he rolled his fingers over the seam, delivering a 122 kmph off-cutter. Mahela, expecting pace, committed to the drive early.

[Commentary - Sunil Gavaskar]:"BOWLED HIM! Siddanth Deva strikes! A magnificent piece of deception! He rolls his fingers over the ball, taking all the pace off. Mahela is through the shot a week early, and the ball crashes into the middle stump! The Sri Lankan captain is gone, and Deva provides a crucial breakthrough!"

WICKET (Mahela Jayawardene 45). Sri Lanka 118/2.

Dinesh Chandimal joined Sangakkara. The young wicketkeeper-batsman had to rebuild while keeping the run rate in check.

Over 18.2: Siddanth Deva to Kumar Sangakkara

Deva bowled a sharp bouncer. Sangakkara was waiting for it.

[Commentary - Sanjay Manjrekar]:"Pulled away! Sangakkara controls the bouncer beautifully, keeping it down and placing it perfectly into the gap at deep square leg! He is looking in phenomenal touch tonight!"(FOUR)

Over 19.5: R. Ashwin to Dinesh Chandimal

Ashwin tossed it up. Chandimal brought out the sweep shot.

[Commentary - Harsha Bhogle]:"Swept hard and swept well! Chandimal gets off to a flyer, taking on the premier spinner! He hits it squarer than conventional, beating the man in the deep!"(FOUR)

Score after 20 Overs: Sri Lanka 140/2. The chase was beautifully poised.

The middle overs became a tactical chess match. Dhoni spread the field, forcing Sangakkara and Chandimal to deal in singles, but the Sri Lankan duo was up to the task.

Over 22.1: Ravindra Jadeja to Kumar Sangakkara

Jadeja dropped it short. Sangakkara rocked back with lightning speed.

[Commentary - Ravi Shastri]:"HE GIVES IT THE TREATMENT! Jadeja drops it short, and Sangakkara launches it into the stands over deep mid-wicket! That is a colossal strike from the elegant left-hander! He moves into the 40s!"(SIX)

Over 24.4: Vinay Kumar to Dinesh Chandimal

Vinay Kumar bowled a wide yorker. Chandimal reached out and squeezed it.

[Commentary - Sunil Gavaskar]:"Squeezed away! A brilliant execution of the late cut! Chandimal guides it past short third man, and the ball races away to the boundary! The partnership is growing menacingly!"(FOUR)

Over 26.3: Praveen Kumar to Kumar Sangakkara

Praveen returned for a new spell, searching for reverse swing. He pitched it up.

[Commentary - Sanjay Manjrekar]:"Oh, magnificent! Straight down the ground! Sangakkara presents the full face of the bat and drives it past the non-striker. That brings up a brilliant half-century for Kumar Sangakkara! He is the glue holding this massive chase together!"(FOUR)

Over 28.5: Ravindra Jadeja to Dinesh Chandimal

Jadeja fired it in on leg stump. Chandimal stepped out and swung hard.

[Commentary - Harsha Bhogle]:"DOWNTOWN! Chandimal steps out, gets to the pitch, and absolutely clobbers Jadeja over long-on for a massive six! Sri Lanka are putting the pressure right back on the Indian spinners! The required rate is well under control!"(SIX)

Score after 30 Overs: Sri Lanka 195/2.

The required run rate was exactly 7.9 per over. With 8 wickets in hand, Sri Lanka were arguably the favorites. The crowd in Dhaka, sensing an upset, was roaring for the Islanders.

MS Dhoni, recognizing the game was slipping away, brought back his strike bowler, Ravichandran Ashwin, for a crucial spell.

Over 31.2: R. Ashwin to Kumar Sangakkara

Ashwin bowled the conventional off-spinner, but gave it a lot of loop. Sangakkara stepped out, looking to clear long-off. He didn't get to the pitch of the ball. It spun sharply, taking the outer half of the bat.

[Commentary - Ravi Shastri]:"IN THE AIR... AND TAKEN! A stunning catch by Virat Kohli! Ashwin tosses it up, Sangakkara is deceived by the flight and slices it! Kohli runs back from cover, keeps his eyes glued to the ball, and takes a brilliant diving catch over his shoulder! A massive, massive moment in this match! The rock of the Sri Lankan innings is gone!"

WICKET (Kumar Sangakkara 68). Sri Lanka 202/3.

Angelo Mathews walked out to the middle. The big-hitting all-rounder was Sri Lanka's designated finisher.

Over 32.4: Irfan Pathan to Angelo Mathews

Irfan bowled a length ball. Mathews didn't take time to settle.

[Commentary - Sunil Gavaskar]:"Heavily struck! Mathews starts his innings with intent! He clears his front leg and hacks Irfan Pathan over mid-wicket for a one-bounce four! Pure power!"(FOUR)

Over 35.1: Irfan Pathan to Dinesh Chandimal

[Commentary - Sanjay Manjrekar]:"PLUMB IN FRONT! Irfan Pathan nails the inswinging yorker! Chandimal is caught planted on the crease, the ball crashes into his back pad, and the umpire raises the finger without hesitation! Chandimal departs after a fighting fifty! India tightening the screws!"

WICKET (Dinesh Chandimal 52). Sri Lanka 225/4.

Lahiru Thirimanne joined Mathews. The required run rate had suddenly spiked past 9.

Over 37.3: Vinay Kumar to Lahiru Thirimanne

Vinay bowled short and wide. Thirimanne cut it fiercely.

[Commentary - Harsha Bhogle]:"Slashed away! Thirimanne cashes in on a poor delivery from Vinay Kumar! Short, wide, and punished through point for a boundary! Sri Lanka desperately need more of these!"(FOUR)

Over 38.5: R. Ashwin to Angelo Mathews

Ashwin tried to dart one in. Mathews read the length early.

[Commentary - Ravi Shastri]:"INTO THE NIGHT SKY! Angelo Mathews gets underneath the carrom ball and dispatches it rows back over the long-on boundary! A colossal six! The big man is keeping Sri Lanka's hopes alive!"(SIX)

Over 39.4: Vinay Kumar to Lahiru Thirimanne

Vinay bowled a slower bouncer. Thirimanne tried to pull but was completely fooled by the lack of pace. He got a top edge that looped straight up in the air.

[Commentary - Sunil Gavaskar]:"UP IN THE AIR... AND DHONI MAKES NO MISTAKE! A brilliant slower bouncer from Vinay Kumar deceives Thirimanne completely! MS Dhoni calls for it early, settles under it, and takes a safe catch with the gloves! India takes their fifth wicket!"

WICKET (Lahiru Thirimanne 12). Sri Lanka 250/5.

Score after 40 Overs: Sri Lanka 252/5.

Over 43.5: Irfan Pathan to Thisara Perera

Nuwan Kulasekara was the new man in.

Over 44.3: Vinay Kumar to Angelo Mathews

They set a mammoth target and defended it brilliantly against a spirited Sri Lankan side!"

WICKET (Lasith Malinga 0).Sri Lanka All Out for 294 in 48.4 Overs.

The Indian team rushed to the center, high-fiving and hugging. They had successfully defended the colossal total, booking their dominance early in the Asia Cup tournament.

The presentation area was quickly assembled on the outfield. Ravi Shastri stood with the microphone, ready to sum up the high-scoring spectacle.

Ravi Shastri: "Ladies and gentlemen, what an absolute blockbuster we have witnessed here in Dhaka! Over 640 runs scored, brilliant centuries, and fantastic bowling under pressure. First, let me invite the captain of Sri Lanka, Mahela Jayawardene."

Mahela walked up, looking tired but appreciative.

Jayawardene: "We always knew chasing 350+ was going to be extremely difficult. We needed one of our top four to bat through and score a big hundred. Dilshan and I started well, Sanga played beautifully, and Angelo showed great fight at the end. But India just had too many runs on the board. Rohit and Virat batted us out of the game in the first innings."

Ravi Shastri: "Thank you, Mahela. Now, the winning captain, MS Dhoni."

Dhoni strolled up to the podium, offering his trademark calm smile.

Dhoni: "It was a complete performance. When you have an opening partnership like Rohit and Virat provided today, it gives the entire team immense freedom. Rohit was elegant, and Virat's pacing of his innings was flawless. In the second half, the dew made it very tough for the bowlers to grip the ball, but Ashwin's spell in the middle overs and the quick breakthroughs by Irfan and our pacers at the death sealed it for us. The fielding, especially from Virat today, was top-class."

Ravi Shastri: "And now, for the Man of the Match. He scored a masterful 108 off 120 balls, took a stunning catch to dismiss Sangakkara, and executed a brilliant run-out in the deep. Please put your hands together for... VIRAT KOHLI!"

Virat Kohli jogged up to the podium, beaming as he accepted the cheque and the trophy.

Ravi Shastri: "Virat, a brilliant century today. You seem to relish the No. 3 position, building the innings and dictating the pace."

Kohli: "Thank you, Ravi bhai. Yes, the plan today was very clear. Rohit was hitting the ball so cleanly from the start, so my role was to rotate the strike and ensure we didn't lose wickets early. Once we were set, the pitch was fantastic to bat on. The ball was coming onto the bat nicely. I just backed myself to play traditional cricket shots until the final ten overs."

Ravi Shastri: "You also had a spectacular day in the field. That catch to dismiss Sangakkara and the run-out of Randiv—how crucial was the fielding effort today?"

Kohli: "In limited-overs cricket, fielding makes all the difference. When the dew sets in, the bowlers are already struggling, so saving 15-20 runs in the field or creating a magic run-out lifts the morale of the entire squad. We train very hard on our fielding, and it's satisfying when it pays off in a match situation."

Ravi Shastri: "A fantastic all-round performance, Virat. Congratulations."

Kohli lifted the trophy to the cheering Indian fans, a massive roar echoing across the stadium as the broadcast signed off.
