Summer tossed and turned but couldn't sleep. His murmur kept irritating her.
With a groan, she pushed herself up. "What is wrong with you? Stop rumbling already. I can't sleep like this."
But Gideon didn't quiet down. In his dreams, he was reliving the agony of losing her.
"I can't lose you," he said hoarsely. "You can't leave me…"
Hearing the distress in his voice, Summer's annoyance turned into concern. She hurried to his bedside. When she noticed his pale face, sweat beading on his forehead, her worry deepened.
"Gideon," she called, tapping at his shoulder gently.
He didn't respond. His eyes remained shut as he continued murmuring incoherently.
"Wake up," she shook his shoulder. "It's only a dream. Open your eyes, and it will be over."
But he seemed trapped somewhere far away, unable to hear her. His breathing turned shallow and uneven, his voice growing strained. For a moment, it looked as if he was struggling for air.
