Chloe stopped short, her lips parting in shock. Confusion and alarm clashed in her eyes. "What… what are you talking about?"
Summer was smiling.
That alone sent a chill through Chloe. She had seen Summer break down. She had expected to see her grieving. But her sister was calm. And the question itself was wrong. Terribly wrong.
'Has she lost her mind?' Chloe thought.
"You didn't bring her," Summer's gaze drifted past Chloe toward the doorway, as if waiting for Hope to appear. No one came.
It disappointed her. Then a crushing weight settled heavily in her chest. Her throat tightened, tears threatening without warning. She didn't understand why she felt sad. The ache in her heart was crushing.
"I've been in the hospital since last night," Summer pouted, sinking back onto the bed. "But you didn't care enough to come see me. Mom didn't come either. It feels like no one cares about me at all."
