Chapter 31 - The Sect Trial V

Qin Hao rolled hard across the broken earth before jamming his spear into the ground to arrest his momentum, his eyes sharp and calculating despite the impact still ringing through his bones. Unlike the Demon Tiger prowling in some distant clearing, the Earthshaking Bear possessed comparatively little intelligence — it didn't bother with strategy or feints. It simply relied on the sheer, unrelenting mass of its own body, and that simplicity made it no less dangerous. There was no hesitation in its attacks, no flicker of fear, no instinct toward retreat. Only destruction, delivered again and again without pause.

Qin Hao wiped the blood from his lips and glanced back just long enough to confirm his companion was still upright — he couldn't afford to split his focus any longer than that single heartbeat. "Come," he said, low and steady, and behind him the Heavenly Wolf Soul let out a howl that seemed to answer the bear's challenge directly.

His Spiritual Energy erupted outward. Heaven's Fury! white light surged through his limbs, and his spear shot forward on the momentum of that burst, slamming into the bear's chest hard enough to carve a deep crater through its scales.

The beast only staggered.

Then it grinned.

Qin Hao's confidence flickered for just a moment before the Earthshaking Bear slammed both paws into the earth simultaneously.

BOOM!

The entire valley shuddered, and Qin Hao's legs buckled under the force travelling up through the ground, his Spiritual Energy scattering into chaos for a critical second. The bear charged the instant he lost his footing, and he barely twisted clear of the attack in time, watching in disbelief as its shoulder ploughed straight into the mountainside behind him.

CRACK!

A massive section of rock sheared away and collapsed in a cloud of dust and debris.

Qin Hao stared at the destruction, something feral and excited creeping into his expression despite the danger. "That much strength..." he murmured, tightening his grip around his spear. This was exactly the kind of opponent he'd been waiting for — something cultivation alone couldn't overcome, something that demanded to be beaten through combat itself, through skill sharpened against genuine desperation rather than theoretical advantage.

On another stretch of the examination realm, the nature of battle shifted entirely. Feng Yan stood atop a frozen lake beside another female disciple armed with a spear, and floating across from them was a gigantic white serpent, its body wrapped in translucent scales that shed a continuous veil of frost, the cold radiating outward until the lake beneath it groaned and cracked under its own thickening ice. A Tier Four Frost Serpent — and unlike the bear tearing through Qin Hao's valley, this creature possessed genuine, patient intelligence.

It didn't charge. It watched, its golden eyes tracking every shift in Feng Yan's stance, every subtle adjustment of her footing, as though calculating the exact moment her guard would loosen.

Feng Yan's Frostmoon Sword flared with a pale, cold glow, and she moved first, refusing to let the serpent dictate the pace of the fight any longer than necessary. Cleaving the Moon! A crescent of sword light tore across the frozen surface of the lake, aimed directly at the serpent's coiled body. Her companion moved in the same breath, her spear igniting with a violent, glowing red as she called out Overlord Spear!, driving the weapon forward on a direct line toward the beast.

The serpent's body vanished before either attack could land. Feng Yan's blade cut only empty air, and the spear buried itself uselessly into the frozen lake instead, sending a spray of shattered ice into the air.

Both women's pupils contracted in unison.

"Behind you!" her companion shouted, already spinning to track the threat.

Feng Yan turned just as the serpent's tail swept toward her in a blur of white. She barely got her sword up in time to brace against it.

BOOM!

The impact sent her sliding hard across the ice, her boots carving twin grooves through the frozen surface before she managed to dig in and stop herself. The serpent didn't pursue immediately — instead, it opened its jaws and released a stream of freezing mist that spread outward across the lake with unnerving speed.

Feng Yan's expression tightened, and she immediately began circulating her Soul Power through her limbs as the frost reached her boots, then crept up over her legs, ice climbing her body with a speed that left no room for hesitation. Her sword intent flared outward in response, sharp and absolute.

Crack! The ice around her shattered, and she launched herself into the air just as the serpent's head snapped toward her new position, its tail simultaneously lashing out at her companion and sending the other woman flying across the ice with a startled cry.

The serpent's jaws opened wide beneath Feng Yan as she fell, ready to close around her mid-descent.

Her eyes sharpened, and at the last possible instant, she abandoned the attack on its head entirely, redirecting her blade downward toward the ice beneath the serpent's coiled body instead.

BOOM!

The frozen lake shattered outward in a spiderweb of fractures, and the serpent's massive body lurched, its balance broken by the sudden collapse of the surface it had been anchored against. Feng Yan descended through the chaos, her sword flashing once, twice, and blood sprayed dark against the white ice as her blade found its mark.

The serpent hissed, a sound thick with something close to genuine alarm, and for the first time since the fight began, it tried to retreat — only to find a spear already locked onto its trajectory, cutting off its escape before it could gather the momentum to flee.

Elsewhere in the trial zone, two hooded figures fought back-to-back against an opponent unlike either of the others. An enormous black-winged ape descended on them repeatedly — a Tier Four Skyshatter Ape, its body wrapped in dark fur, its arms hanging long enough to drag against the ground even while standing upright. Its wings let it move through the air with a speed that seemed to mock its own bulk, and unlike the Earthshaking Bear, this creature carried a surprisingly sharp intelligence behind its eyes.

It attacked from above without warning.

BOOM!

One of the hooded figures caught the blow directly, the ground beneath his boots cracking under the force, while his companion immediately spun into a counterattack the moment the ape's guard opened. Their coordination was close to flawless — every movement synchronised, every gap covered before the other side could exploit it.

"Left," one of them said sharply, and the other moved without a flicker of hesitation, the ape's fist tearing through the space his head had occupied a half-second earlier. A sword flashed in response, cutting a deep line across the ape's shoulder — a wound that sealed itself shut again almost as quickly as it had opened.

The two cultivators separated, resetting their positions, and the fight continued at the same relentless pace. This was no longer a contest of raw strength. It had become something closer to a duel of tactics, each side probing for the smallest crack in the other's defence.

Back at the sect arena, the elders watching through the crystal screens grew steadily more serious as scene after scene played out across the trial grounds. This examination had already surpassed anything they'd expected going into it. The disciples had been scattered across an unforgiving trial zone, and yet several of them had not only survived encounters with beasts that should have been entirely beyond their cultivation — they were beginning to reveal exactly how much potential they'd been hiding all along.

Back in the clearing, Jin Bao lay sprawled several meters from where he'd started, his protective talisman still flickering faintly from having activated moments earlier when the Demon Tiger's attack threw him clear of the fight. He raised his head slowly, dust caking his face, blinking against the disorientation. "Brother Mo..."

The Demon Tiger attacked again before he could finish the thought. Mo Xuan barely twisted out of the path of its claws in time.

BOOM!

The ground detonated behind him, throwing loose dirt and shredded grass into the air, and Mo Xuan rolled hard to put distance between himself and the beast, his mind racing even as his body moved on pure reflex. Something his master had once told him surfaced unbidden through the chaos — a fragment he'd never fully understood until this exact, desperate moment.

Your Cosmic Soul, even if mutated, is your foundation. It is born of two halves — not truly a twin Cosmic Soul, but something waiting for a catalyst to finally become one. When they merge, your path shall be revealed.

His breathing grew heavier, ragged with exertion and something closer to realisation. Merge. What had his master actually meant by that? His Cosmic Soul had mutated during the strange occurrence at his awakening ceremony, forming from two opposing aspects — two runic halves anchored around a sword suspended between them, holding a kind of fragile balance he'd never questioned before now. He had always treated the two halves as separate pieces of himself, distinct and independent.

Could that assumption have been the entire problem all along?

The image of the Moon Dew Grass surfaced in his mind without warning, unbidden and vivid — the memory of that single afternoon years ago, the way Spiritual Energy had cycled endlessly. One cycle. One continuous flow. There had been no true separation in it, no division between where the pattern began and where it ended, even if he'd never managed to grasp the whole shape of what he'd witnessed that day. Everything in that cycle had simply returned to itself, over and over, without struggle.
