10 Years After That Day
"I got it! Look! Does this look good, Mom?"
Rahul spun around in front of the mirror, his tiny shoes squeaking against the store floor.
I laughed.
Before I could answer, someone beside me spoke first.
"You're the most handsome boy around here, my Rahul baby."
I turned to see Kuu crouching down next to him, adjusting the collar of his little jacket.
"Yeah, Rahul," Kunal added with a proud smile. "You look very good in those clothes."
Rahul beamed, his eyes shining exactly like his father's.
We were in the middle of a children's clothing store, surrounded by tiny blazers, bow ties, and shirts way too small to believe they fit actual humans. Today was important — Rahul's first school performance.
He insisted on choosing his own outfit.
"I want to look cool like Papa," he had said earlier.
And now here he was, standing tall, hands on his hips, waiting for approval.
I knelt down in front of him.
"You look perfect," I said softly, smoothing his hair. "But what matters most is your smile, okay?"
He nodded seriously, like he understood something very profound.
Kunal stood behind him and winked at me.
Ten years.
Ten years since that riverside.
Ten years since blood on my hands and fear in my throat.
Now—
The only red on my hands was from helping Rahul with finger painting last night.
Life had a strange way of rewriting stories.
As Rahul ran toward the mirror again, Kunal slipped his hand into mine.
"You okay?" he asked quietly.
I squeezed his fingers.
"Yeah," I smiled. "More than okay."
Rahul.
We named him after Rahul — the one who once helped us during Salina's stalker incident. Kunal admired him deeply back then. Strength. Loyalty. Courage.
We wanted our son to grow up with those same values.
But as I watched our little boy try to flex in front of the mirror—
I realized something.
He doesn't need to be strong like anyone else.
He just needs to grow up knowing he's loved.
And standing there between the two boys I love most—
I finally understood.
We didn't just survive the past.
We built something beautiful from it.
