Chapter 18 - THE REWRITE BEGINS

The air around Ethan vibrated —

as if the city itself was breathing with him.

Lines of code drifted through the sky like glowing dust,

pulling toward him

as though recognizing their new master.

A second heartbeat echoed inside his chest —

not human,

not mechanical,

something in-between.

The Core adjusting… synchronizing…

claiming him.

A ripple ran across the floating streets.

The buildings bent,

tilted,

and then straightened again

as if bowing to him.

"Level Two…" Ethan whispered.

But the moment he spoke,

the ground beneath him cracked open —

not breaking,

just… shifting its language.

The glowing lines of code rearranged themselves

into a circular platform.

A symbol appeared at his feet:

a broken infinity loop.

SYSTEM DIRECTIVE:

ACCESS GRANTED — CORE PATHWAY UNLOCKED.

A bridge formed in front of him,

thin as a thread and made entirely of luminous glyphs.

Every step forward hummed like a living nerve.

But halfway across the bridge,

Ethan froze.

Someone was standing at the other end.

Not glitching.

Not distorted.

Completely stable.

A girl.

Young.

Dark hair braided tightly behind her.

Her eyes—

silver, sharp, unblinking—

were scanning him the way a security system does.

"Player One," she said softly.

"You're late."

Ethan blinked. "Who are you?"

Her expression didn't change.

"I am the Archivist of Level Two.

The keeper of everything this world remembers…

and everything it wants to forget."

The bridge shivered under Ethan's feet.

She took a single step closer,

and the temperature dropped —

not physically,

but in the code around them.

"Ryan was supposed to reach Level Two first,"

she continued.

"He built the merge.

Maria corrected it.

But you…"

She tilted her head slightly.

"…you were never meant to exist."

A sharp pain pierced Ethan's skull again —

another memory flash:

Maria shouting:

"Shut it down! He wasn't ready!"

Ryan screaming back:

"It's too late! He's inside—"

The Archivist watched him fold, gasping.

"When the merge failed," she said,

"the game didn't kill them."

Her voice lowered.

"It absorbed them."

Ethan's breath stopped.

"They're still here."

He whispered it like a secret forbidden even to himself.

"Partially," the girl said.

"Fragments. Echoes.

Pieces of a consciousness

trying to rebuild itself."

The sky rumbled —

this time not digital,

but something deeper,

as if a memory the world didn't want to show

was trying to break through.

She narrowed her eyes.

"You've already met one of the fragments."

The glitch-figure.

The half-Ryan monster.

The one who warned him.

"He's unstable," she said.

"And he's not the only one wandering Level Two."

A red fracture split the sky like a wound.

The Archivist's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Ethan…

if you want to survive this level…"

She leaned forward.

"…you must reconstruct the Core before the fragments reconstruct you."

Lightning crashed behind her,

forming another burning word:

ASCEND.

The bridge dissolved beneath Ethan's feet

and he plunged into darkness —

not falling,

but being pulled

like data sucked into a black hole.

As the world swallowed him whole,

the cold metallic voice whispered again:

"Player One — begin the reconstruction."

And Ethan didn't fight it.

He closed his eyes.

For the first time,

he allowed the game

to rewrite him.

The burning word REWRITE melted out of the sky, dripping like molten metal.

Each drop hit the ground with a sharp hiss —

turning instantly into streams of glowing blue code.

Ethan took a single step forward —

THUMM…

The entire Memory Grid pulsed in sync with his heartbeat.

But the beat wasn't his.

It felt borrowed —

Ryan's?

Maria's?

Or the Merge itself… watching him?

SYSTEM ALERT:

CORE MEMORY LOCKED.

TO UNLOCK → FACE THE FIRST ECHO.

A cold wind swept across the floating city.

The firewalls flickered.

The black sun above dimmed.

And right in the center of Sector 7,

the ground split open —

like reality was being torn apart by invisible claws.

A voice escaped from the crack.

A cry.

A memory.

A trapped soul.

And then… something crawled out.

A human-shaped figure,

but completely glitched —

skin flickering between pixels and ash,

face half-burned,

eyes glowing red like corrupted embers.

ECHO-1 ONLINE

FORM: RYAN'S FEAR

The creature stopped inches from Ethan.

When it spoke,

the voice was unmistakable —

Ryan's.

"I tried to stop this…

but you started it again."

Ethan stumbled backward.

"You're… Ryan?"

The Echo laughed —

a distorted, metallic choke.

"No.

I am Ryan's fear.

The fear that forced him to become the Merge."

Behind them, the world cracked open.

Not into fire —

but into memories.

Broken recordings.

Fragments of screams.

A burning lab.

Maria crying.

Ryan shouting—

"If the game survives…

we don't."

Ethan reached toward one of the memory shards—

and instantly regretted it.

A jolt shot through him.

PLAYER SYNC: 22%

IF SYNC REACHES 100% → PLAYER WILL LOSE SELF.

Ethan's breath caught.

"

What is happening!? Why am I syncing with him!?"

The Echo circled him slowly,

every footstep sparking glitch-fires in the air.

"Because you are connected by blood…

to Ryan…

and to Maria.

The system sees you as the next Core."

Ethan froze.

Bloodline?

Next Core?

The Echo leaned closer until its face glitched inches from Ethan's.

"If you don't survive Level Two…

you won't escape.

You'll become me."

A second tear ripped open behind the creature —

a doorway of red and blue lightning.

LEVEL OBJECTIVE UPDATED:

CONFRONT RYAN'S FEAR.

OR BECOME IT.

Ethan's fingers trembled…

but his golden eyes burned brighter.

The world whispered around him —

a single question etched in static:

"Will you run… or Rewrite?"
