Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The Battle of Hawkins

Chapter 40: The Battle of Hawkins

POV: Adam

November 10th, 1984, and three impossible tasks must succeed simultaneously or Hawkins—and everyone Adam loves—falls to interdimensional hunger that views human consciousness as food to be consumed rather than life to be preserved.

In the Byers' shed, transformed into a sweltering chamber of desperate hope, Joyce cranks space heaters to maximum while Will's possessed body writhes against restraints that barely contain the Mind Flayer's ancient fury. The temperature climbs toward dangerous levels—heat that could save his consciousness or stop his heart.

One hundred six degrees and rising. Will's body can't take much more.

Through their empathic bond, Adam feels his brother's terror like ice water in his borrowed veins—Will's consciousness trapped in mental space that grows smaller with each degree of temperature increase. The Mind Flayer screams through Will's mouth, a sound that belongs in nightmares rather than suburban sheds.

Hold on, Will. Remember who you are.

Adam maintains their psychic connection despite the cost, using his Hive Resonance ability to anchor Will's mind with memory anchors that the Mind Flayer can't corrupt or consume.

"Castle Byers," Adam whispers through tears and dimensional static. "The Clash. Jonathan's mix tapes. Mom's smile when she's proud of us. You're Will Byers. The monster doesn't own you."

These are your truths. Hold onto them.

Through the mental link, Adam feels Will's consciousness fighting back—not with power or rage, but with stubborn love that refuses to surrender even when faced with entity that's devoured civilizations.

I remember. I remember all of it.

The Mind Flayer's response comes as psychic violence that makes Adam's nose bleed with sympathetic trauma.

"You cannot save him!" the entity shrieks through Will's vocal cords. "He is MINE! All of you will be MINE!"

No. He's my brother. He belongs to family, not to hunger.

"He's my brother," Adam screams back through psychic connection that carries love across dimensional barriers. "GET. OUT."

Family. The force that makes impossible things inevitable.

At Hawkins Lab, three miles away, Adam's creature army faces odds that should result in immediate annihilation. Forty wild Demodogs pour through tunnel connections like living nightmares, their flower-faces unfurling with Hive Mind coordination that reduces individual tactics to collective slaughter.

Seven creatures against forty. Mathematical impossibility disguised as heroic last stand.

Through Scout's enhanced senses, Adam coordinates their final battle across dimensional space that makes his system scream warnings about psychic overload and structural damage. His creatures respond with loyalty that transcends species—pack bonds forged in shared danger, strengthened by consistent care, transformed into love that chooses sacrifice over survival.

Vine Crawlers, establish chokepoints. Demodogs, pack formation. Scout, lead them through hell itself.

The battle unfolds with vicious precision—his creatures fighting not just for their own survival, but for the human family that claimed them as worthy of protection. Vine Crawlers root themselves across critical corridors, their plant-based consciousness translating love into stubborn defense that holds against impossible odds.

Three Vine Crawlers torn apart holding a single doorway. They died buying seconds that might save lives.

His Demodogs fight in coordinated formation, using intelligence enhanced by bond-connection to outmaneuver creatures that outnumber them six to one. But numbers tell their own story—two pack members fall defending injured soldiers who'll never know their names.

Heroes. They died as heroes.

Scout, wounded and exhausted, sees Eleven approaching the lab with Hopper providing escort. The creature makes one final tactical decision—hold the corridor until they pass, then follow to provide whatever support his damaged body can manage.

Go, old friend. See this through to the end.

Adam feels each death like knives to his borrowed heart, but through tears and dimensional backlash, he whispers gratitude across psychic space.

"Thank you. You were heroes. All of you."

Heroes who'll never be remembered by anyone except the boy who sent them to die for family they'd never met.

In the shed, Will finally breaks free with violence that seems to tear reality at its seams. Black tendril erupts from his mouth like liquid malevolence, the physical manifestation of possession that should have consumed his consciousness entirely.

Out. The Mind Flayer's connection is severed.

Will collapses beside Adam, both boys gasping and sobbing while Joyce pulls them against her chest with maternal relief that doesn't require explanation.

"My boys," she whispers through tears that taste like victory and grief combined. "My brave, beautiful boys."

Boys. Plural. We're both her sons, both worth saving, both worthy of love that doesn't require perfection.

At the lab, Eleven stands before the interdimensional gate with power blazing around her like controlled star-fire. Reality tears open to reveal the Upside Down in all its toxic glory—nightmare landscape where the Mind Flayer rules absolute, sending creatures to devour worlds that dare to exist independent of its hunger.

Close it, El. End this.

Eleven raises her hands and closes the gate with psychic force that rewrites the fundamental laws of dimensional physics. The portal collapses in on itself like a dying star, severing the Mind Flayer's connection to their reality with violence that echoes across multiple dimensions.

The Demodog swarm dies instantly. The wild ones, the controlled ones—all of them linked to the entity that just lost its anchor point in normal reality.

Adam feels the gate closure through his Hive Connection like physical amputation. The psychic network that's defined his existence since waking up in Subject 017's body tears apart with violence that knocks him unconscious, his borrowed nervous system unable to process the sudden severance from dimensional influence.

Hours later, Adam wakes to Scout limping into the Byers living room like a four-legged refugee from war zones that exist between dimensions. The creature's loyalty reads at one hundred percent now—they've been through hell together, and survival has transformed bond into something approaching brotherhood.

You made it. Against all odds, you survived.

Adam pulls Scout into a hug that smells like Upside Down residue and absolute devotion, sobbing into fur that carries the scent of battles fought for family rather than territory.

"You're alive. You're here."

My first friend in this world. The creature who taught me that love transcends species.

Behind him, the reunited Party surrounds Eleven with joy that makes their shared trauma feel temporarily manageable. Mike cries into her shoulder while Dustin babbles about her hair and Lucas grins with relief that doesn't require explanation.

Everything has changed. Everything has stayed the same.

We're family. All of us. Human and monster alike.

Two weeks later, December 1984, the Snow Ball transforms Hawkins Middle School into something approaching magical. Will dances with a girl who doesn't see him as the boy who was possessed, Mike holds Eleven's hand like she might disappear if he lets go, Dustin shows off dental work that makes his smile brilliant.

Normal. They're pretending to be normal teenagers at a normal school dance.

Adam watches from the corner with Scout hidden in the woods outside, counting the people who survived because he chose love over safety, revelation over secrecy, family over everything else.

I saved them. Not all of them—five creatures died, and that wound won't heal—but I saved the people who matter most.

I'm Adam Byers. Monster tamer. Son. Brother. Friend.

And this is only the beginning.

Through the gym windows, he can see Scout's eyes reflecting light from the parking lot—patient, loyal, ready for whatever comes next.

The Mind Flayer remembers me now. It knows I exist, knows I can command its creatures, knows I'm a threat to any future plans.

But tonight, we celebrate survival.

Tomorrow, we prepare for whatever comes next.

All of us.

Forever.
