Chapter 21: The Library and the Death Declaration
If he truly encountered a criminal, Ryusei Kiryu wouldn't mind carrying out justice. However, his current strength was too low; his inventory contained little more than a baseball bat. Against thugs with knives or firearms, his best bet was to use Double Jump and run.
Are there any criminals in Beika with high crime value but low combat power? He wondered. His phone vibrated again.
Eriri: Hey! You! Why did you suddenly stop talking? What are you thinking about? Ryusei: I'm thinking about how to kill someone. Eriri: !!! I'm calling the police! Ryusei: Go ahead, Kashiwagi-sensei, but filing a false report carries legal consequences. Eriri: You! There's a limit to joking! Ryusei: Alright, fine. I'm actually thinking about how to become the God of the New World. Eriri: ?
Ryusei closed the app and searched for the Beika Library. He remembered the name vividly from the animeâthe "Library Murder Case" was one of the series' most unsettling episodes. The librarian, Shuji Tsugawa, appeared kind but was a drug smuggler who had murdered a staff member and hidden the body atop the elevator.
He quickly confirmed the facts: the library existed, and Tsugawa was the current librarian.
There haven't been reports of missing staff yet, Ryusei noted. Which means the murder hasn't happened, but the drug smuggling likely has.
He decided to test his innate skill: Death Declaration.
[Death Declaration]: Declare the death of a target. The target will die within three days of a random cause. (Cooldown: 1 month).
An intuitive feeling told him he could add conditions to the declaration to ensure justice. He spoke in a low voice: "Shuji Tsugawa, the librarian of Beika Libraryâif you have participated in drug smuggling or committed other criminal activities, then I hereby declare your death."
He felt a sudden emptiness in his heart. Checking the system panel, he saw the 30-day cooldown had begun. It felt less like a skill and more like a divine judgment. Now, he simply had to wait three days to see if it counted as a "kill" that would drop coins.
The power reminded him of the Death Note. He searched for Oukoku Private High School and confirmed it existed nearby, meaning Light Yagami and L were likely active in this world. While he could theoretically steal the Notebook, he wasn't keen on being followed by a Shinigami or drawing the attention of the world's greatest detective.
Besides, humans aren't as heavy as cows, he mused. If the drops aren't better than livestock, the risk isn't worth it.
At 10:00 PM, he prepared for bed. Remembering Kotonoha's proactive "Good Morning" earlier, he sent her a "Goodnight" message. On a whim, he sent one to Eriri as well.
Katsura Kotonoha: Good night! Eriri: ??? Going to bed so early?
He ignored the night owl Eriri and went to sleep.
The next morning, Ryusei woke up feeling remarkably refreshed. His eyes didn't feel the usual morning soreness. The Eye Protection Exercises are definitely working, he thought.
It was Thursday, his fifth day in this world. During his morning run, he spotted Takumi Fujiwara's AE86 speeding off. He stopped by the convenience store to buy two blocks of tofu; after two days of fried fish, he wanted something lighter for dinner.
Back home, he checked the news for the library but saw nothing yet. Then, a message arrived.
Katsura Kotonoha: Good morning, Ryusei-kun! Ryusei: Morning, Kotonoha-san. I'm going to take a shower now.
Shower? Kotonoha froze. She remembered the fresh scent of shampoo she had noticed when they were pressed together on the subway. He's very clean, she thought, before self-consciously sniffing her own pajamas. A few minutes later, her sister Kokoro found her standing outside the bathroom.
"Onee-chan, why are you showering so early?"
"Go brush your teeth!" Kotonoha replied quickly.
After breakfast, Ryusei boarded the subway and pulled out the light novel Koisuru Metronome. The morning light was perfect for reading. When the train reached the next station, he and Kotonoha met "coincidentally" once again.
"Ryusei-kun!"
"Kotonoha-san."
She walked directly toward him, and he naturally reached out to shield her from the crowd. She smells like soap... did she shower too?
She looked curiously at the book in his hand. "Is that a light novel? Do you like reading?"
"I do," she said immediately. Unlike kendo or calligraphyâwhich she did to please her familyâreading was one of the few things that truly relaxed her.
Ryusei smiled. "I thought so. People who appreciate calligraphy usually have a love for literature."
Kotonoha felt a bit embarrassed. She didn't actually love calligraphy yet, but looking at Ryusei, she felt that she could genuinely learn to like it in the future.
