Halsemon was an Armor-level Beast-type Digimon born from the power of the Digi-Egg of Love. The Digi-Egg of Love carried the Wind attribute, and by using that power, Halsemon could flap its wings and soar through the sky like a gust of wind. In aerial battles, thanks to its speed, all of its attacks rained down from above onto enemy Digimon. Its finishing moves were Mach Impulse, a shock wave fired from its wings, and Tempest Wing, a massive tornado created by spinning its body. Its signature technique was Udjat Gaze, a spell-like beam unleashed from its keen eyes.
Digmon was an Armor-level Insect-type Digimon born from the power of the Digi-Egg of Knowledge. The Digi-Egg of Knowledge held the Earth attribute; by using its power, Digmon possessed the ability to manipulate the ground itself. Its unusual body shape made it unbeatable in battles against Digimon that dwelled underground. Its special technique was Big Crack, where its spinning drills struck the ground and split it open, and its finishing move was Gold Rush, in which the drills on its nose and both hands spun at high speed and struck the enemy all at once.
"Let's go—time to save our friend."
Finally remembering that they were supposed to be rescuing Davis, Yolei and Cody climbed onto their partner Digimon and set off. Tai and the other four followed behind them.
Meanwhile, just as the Dark Ring was about to clamp down on Veemon's body, two red arrows of light—Crimson Sun—shot out from behind the mountain, struck the Dark Ring, and in a burst of explosive light shattered it to pieces.
"What?!" The Digimon Emperor was stunned.
"Davis!" Yolei called his name from atop Halsemon's back.
"Yolei!"
At the same time, the rock wall behind Veemon shattered, and Digmon burst out from within, rescuing Veemon.
Seeing this, the Digimon Emperor turned to leave—but a small cat blocked his path. It was Gatomon.
"I'm not letting you past."
"Don't you lay a finger on Ken!" Wormmon scuttled out and planted himself in front of the Digimon Emperor.
"Cat Punch!"
With a light punch, Gatomon sent Wormmon flying. Wormmon crashed into the Emperor's hand, knocking the DT Digivice and the D-3 Digivice out of his grip and sending them tumbling down—right into Yolei's waiting hands below.
"Damn it! Snimon!"
As the Digimon Emperor shouted, a Snimon bearing a Dark Ring rose up behind him. Gatomon charged in, but Snimon dodged aside, and Gatomon fell from the cliff. She twisted easily in midair, and when she landed, the others were already gathered below.
Yolei handed the DT Digivice and D-3 Digivice back to Davis. "Here."
"Thanks."
After thanking her, Davis raised his D-3 Digivice. "All right—time to fight back. Go, Veemon!"
"Veemon Armor Digivolve to… Flamedramon, the Fire of Courage!"
At that moment, the Digimon under the Digimon Emperor's control appeared in front of the children as well: two Snimon, two Mojyamon, and one Drimogemon.
Mojyamon was a Rare Beast-type Digimon said to inhabit snow-covered mountains. Its entire body was covered in white fur, and because it dwelled deep in snowbound peaks, it was almost never seen. There had been many so-called eyewitness reports about Mojyamon, but without any real proof, its existence remained uncertain for a long time. Its personality was gentle and it disliked fighting, but that didn't mean it would forgive any Digimon that destroyed its home or shelter. Its attacks included Icicle Rod / Super Ice Arrow, where it struck the enemy with an icy staff, Bone Bone Boomerang, where it hurled the bone in its hand in a boomerang arc, and Dancing Punch, in which it punched to the rhythm while dancing.
The Digimon began choosing their opponents. Halsemon faced off against the Snimon, Digmon charged for Drimogemon, and Gatomon and Flamedramon took on the Mojyamon.
"Super Ice Arrow!"
Mojyamon sent two pillars of ice shooting toward Gatomon and Flamedramon. Flames flared around Flamedramon's claws as he caught one of them, melting it straight into steam. Gatomon took an even more direct approach: relying on the sharp claws she'd inherited from Golden SaberLeomon, she slashed the other icicle clean in two, then sliced apart the Dark Ring on Mojyamon's body. Flamedramon followed up with his own special move, "Knuckle Fire," burning away the Dark Ring wrapped around the other Mojyamon.
On Cody's side of the battle, Digmon—with its five drills—was clearly much faster at tunneling than the single-drilled Drimogemon. After catching up, Digmon immediately used its special move, "Gold Rush," smashing the Dark Ring on Drimogemon's leg to pieces.
Things weren't going nearly as well for Yolei. Halsemon was struggling, forced to take on two enemies alone. The two Snimon kept launching "Shadow Sickle" over and over at him. Because he had to worry about Yolei on his back, Halsemon didn't dare dodge too quickly.
"Mach Impulse!"
Halsemon's special attack slammed into an incoming Shadow Sickle he couldn't avoid. The collision detonated with a deafening explosion and brilliant flash of light that blocked everyone's vision. At that exact moment, three figures appeared behind Halsemon.
"Turbo Stinger!"
Three large-caliber laser blasts struck Halsemon—it was Waspmon, summoned by the Digimon Emperor.
Waspmon was a Modified Digimon tasked with guarding the mysterious aerial secret base "Royal Base." The sensory units on its antennae gave it excellent detection capabilities, so it constantly patrolled around the base, watching for Digimon that approached; anything that came near would be attacked. Thanks to the boosters on its shoulders and the automatic stabilizer system on its back, it could dash at high speed in any direction—up, down, left, right, forward, or backward—to intercept approaching enemies and drive them off with powerful laser cannons. Its special attacks were Turbo Stinger, where it fired a continuous volley of large-caliber laser blasts from its tail, and Bear Buster, a charged, single massive shot that could take down even a large Digimon in one hit—though it was hard to land on agile opponents and was most effective against big ground-based Digimon.
Halsemon cried out in pain and plummeted toward the ground, his body flashing with light as he de-digivolved back into Hawkmon midair.
"Oh no!"
Gatomon kicked off the cliff face, using the rock wall to spring herself upward and catch Yolei as she fell from Halsemon's back.
"We're safe…"
Yolei let out a breath of relief, then immediately looked over at Hawkmon. "Are you okay, Hawkmon?"
"I'm sorry, Yolei," Hawkmon said as he opened his eyes, guilt written all over his face.
"Hawkmon…"
Yolei held the injured Hawkmon in her arms, unable to say another word.
"Ha ha ha!"
The Digimon Emperor's arrogant laughter rang out again. "Well? You annoying pests have really ticked me off. I'm going to punish you rude brats. Go, Waspmon! Snimon!"
The buzzing of wings filled the air as three Waspmon and the Snimon swarmed in, unleashing "Shadow Sickle" and "Turbo Stinger" over and over. A storm of attacks poured down toward the children.
"Knuckle Fire!"
"Cat Punch!"
"Gold Rush!"
"Nova Blast!"
With Halsemon grounded and unable to control the skies anymore, the kids scrambled to dodge the incoming barrage, while their partner Digimon fired off their own special moves to intercept the attacks.
"Gold Rush!"
Digmon had just blocked an incoming Shadow Sickle when a Waspmon swooped in behind him.
"Bear Buster!"
The stinger on its tail gleamed with deadly light as it shot straight toward Digmon. Nowhere near agile enough, Digmon couldn't dodge it at all.
"Ahhh!"
Digmon let out a cry of pain, crashed to the ground, and in a flash of light de-digivolved back into Armadillomon.
"Turbo Stinger! Turbo Stinger! Turbo Stinger!"
Three massive beams slammed into Flamedramon. The explosions sent him flying, and before he even hit the ground, he reverted back into Veemon in midair.
"Armadillomon!"
"Veemon!"
Gatomon sprinted as fast as she could, leaping aside again and again while huge bursts of flame erupted behind her. Overhead, the two Snimon flew in relentless pursuit, attacking nonstop and leaving her no chance to counterattack.
"Turbo Stinger!"
A laser blast struck Greymon square in the back. Using his massive body, Greymon shielded the children, but that created another problem—he couldn't dodge at all, or else the kids in front of him would be exposed to the attacks. Roaring in pain from the hit, Greymon twisted around and fired a "Nova Blast," showing no mercy as the blazing fireball incinerated the Waspmon to ash.
"Hey, you can't do that!" Cody shouted.
"Why is Greymon hurting them?" T.K. yelled.
"Greymon can't afford to hold back anymore. If this keeps up, we're all going to die," Tai said. Then he shouted, "Greymon, stop holding back—wipe them out!"
"Why, Tai?!" Davis ran over, shouting. "If we just take off the Dark Rings, they'll go back to normal!"
"Tai…"
Greymon looked back at Tai, unsure what to do.
"Ah!"
Gatomon tried to launch an attack, but one of the Snimon slammed into her in midair and sent her crashing to the ground.
"Gatomon!"
The Snimon that had knocked Gatomon down ignored her after that. At the Digimon Emperor's command, it fell back in with the Waspmon and they surrounded Greymon. They unleashed their special attacks in a frenzy. Multiple Shadow Sickles and laser blasts hammered Greymon's back, and he roared in agony, dropping to one knee.
With Greymon forced down, the kids he'd been shielding were suddenly exposed. A laser beam shot straight toward Kari, who was now out in the open. Just as the beam was about to hit her, Tai jumped in front of her.
"Tai!" Sora cried out at the sight.
"Tai!" Kari called anxiously from behind his back.
Tai raised his right hand toward the incoming laser.
Boom!
The explosion and flames swallowed him from sight. But a moment later, Tai emerged from the fire, pulling Kari along with him. An orange-yellow barrier shimmered around them, blocking the flames all around.
"You've really made me angry," Tai said, eyes blazing. "Greymon—get ready to digivolve to Ultimate!"
