Chapter 40 - CHAPTER 40 : The First of the Thirteen

Vaelor didn't sprint.

He didn't stride.

He unfolded.

His body blurred, splitting into three flickering after-images before snapping back together in front of Kael with a burst of white-gold light. His movements weren't fast—

—they were inevitable.

Like time itself briefly forgot Kael was allowed to move.

Kael jerked backward on instinct alone.

Tova shoved him aside at the same moment, slamming her staff into the floor.

A shield of green light snapped up—

—but Vaelor's hand passed through it like fog.

Tova gasped. "Kael—He phased through—"

She didn't finish.

Vaelor's fingers closed around Kael's throat.

Not choking.

Not crushing.

Just… holding.

Cold.

Unbelievably cold.

Kael's breath caught.

His fire flickered wildly inside him.

Vaelor's golden eyes widened.

He exhaled sharply, almost hungrily.

"Ahh… it has been centuries since I felt a true flame."

Kael tried to pull away, but Vaelor didn't need strength to restrain him. His fingers sank into Kael like light slipping into water. They didn't grip flesh—they gripped the memory of Kael's body.

Kael's voice came out strangled. "Let… go—"

Vaelor whispered,

"No. Not until you give it to me."

Tova slammed her staff against Vaelor's back, firing a concentrated beam of emerald energy.

It passed through him—

like he wasn't real.

Vaelor didn't even blink.

Tova cursed loudly, "Kael, he's made of memory!"

Vaelor slowly turned his head toward her.

"She is correct," he said, calm and cold. "This bastion sustains me. I am neither alive nor dead. I am remembered. And memories…"

He looked back at Kael.

"...can reach where nothing else can."

A pulse of icy energy shot through Kael's chest.

He screamed.

The Origin Flame flickered violently.

His vision blurred.

Tova shouted his name, but her voice sounded far away.

Vaelor whispered in Kael's ear,

"Give it to me. Give me enough fire to end myself. You do not understand the torture of eternity."

Kael gritted his teeth through the pain.

"I won't… die… for you."

Vaelor smiled sadly.

"You already are."

He pressed his hand deeper—

into Kael's mind.

Kael's pupils blew wide.

His memories flashed uncontrollably.

His father's shadow.

His mother laughing.

A younger Astra running barefoot through a field.

A burning house.

Flame swallowing everything.

Tova lunged forward.

"KAEL—FOCUS ON YOUR NAME!"

Her voice barely reached him.

But Kael grabbed onto those three words like they were a rope thrown into a storm.

He forced his eyes open.

"My… name… is Kael."

The flame inside him responded instantly.

It wasn't gentle this time.

It exploded.

Blue-gold fire blasted outward from Kael's core.

Vaelor staggered back—not physically—

his form flickered like a torn page flapping in the wind.

He recoiled, shock rippling across his face for the first time.

"You—resisted—? Against me?" Vaelor whispered.

Kael staggered upright, chest heaving, flames dripping from his fingers like molten paint.

His voice was raw.

"You don't get to decide when I die."

Vaelor's expression shifted—

sorrow first.

Then envy.

Then fury.

He floated off the ground, cloak unraveling into golden strands.

"You claim the Flame as your own," Vaelor said, voice trembling. "You dare speak a name you chose… but names mean nothing here."

The Bastion echoed with a thousand whispers all repeating:

Nothing nothing nothing nothing—

Kael wiped blood from his lip. "I don't care what this place thinks. My name is Kael."

The whispering shattered like glass.

Vaelor's pupils contracted.

"Then I will tear that name from you."

The Bastion Awakens

The hall trembled.

Walls folded inwards.

Columns twisted into spiral blades.

The floor cracked open, glowing with silver memory-light.

Tova planted her staff and clung to the ground.

"KAEL—THE ENTIRE BASTION IS MOVING!"

Vaelor spread his arms.

"No. It is remembering."

Kael braced himself.

Vaelor blurred again—

but this time Kael's flame reacted faster than thought.

Blue-gold fire erupted from Kael's back, pushing him upward in a burst of propulsion. He shot into the air as Vaelor's hand sliced through the space he had just occupied.

Vaelor reappeared above him, fist already descending.

Kael thrust both hands upward.

His fire exploded.

Vaelor's punch met the blast.

The shockwave cracked the hall open.

Memory fragments—faces, places, entire scenes—splintered into the air like shards of forgotten glass.

Kael grunted from the force.

Vaelor didn't move.

"You burn too brightly," Vaelor whispered. "Far too bright for one body."

Kael forced out a laugh.

"Yeah? You should see me on a bad day."

Vaelor's jaw tightened.

He phased backward, vanishing into smoke—

then reappeared behind Kael, driving a hand toward his spine.

Tova screamed, "KAEL—LEFT!"

Kael twisted mid-air, flame bursting from his feet, launching him sideways.

Vaelor's strike tore through the space where Kael's heart had been—

—and shredded a memory instead.

A child's laughter drifted out.

Kael flinched.

"My… memory…" he whispered.

Vaelor's eyes burned.

"Yes. I told you. You cannot survive this fight."

Kael growled.

He shot downward, landing on the shifting floor.

Tova ran to him, grabbing his arm urgently.

"Kael, your memories are leaking out—look!"

He turned.

Small glass-like shards rose from the floor, showing flickers of his past.

His father.

His village.

The fire.

Kael felt his throat close.

Vaelor descended, robes reforming around him like clouds.

"Give up," he said softly. "Give me your flame. You cannot carry it. It is not meant for you."

Kael's chest burned.

He stepped in front of the swirling memories.

"No."

Vaelor's expression twisted.

Kael raised both hands.

"MY NAME IS KAEL."

The fire howled out of him—

a wave so bright the entire hallway turned white.

The blast slammed into Vaelor.

For a moment, Vaelor's outline wavered—

almost dissolving.

Tova stared in shock.

"You… you're hurting him!"

Kael gritted his teeth.

"Good!"

But Vaelor didn't fall.

He smiled.

"Yes," he whispered. "That is the strength I wanted to see."

Kael froze.

"What?"

Vaelor's expression softened—strangely.

"You misunderstand me. I am not your enemy."

Kael blinked, stunned.

"You… literally tried to rip my mind apart!"

"Yes," Vaelor said. "Because I needed to know if you could survive the Harrower."

Kael's stomach twisted.

"This was a test?!"

"A brutal one," Vaelor admitted. "But the only one worth giving you. If you cannot resist me, you cannot resist it."

Kael opened his mouth—

closed it—

opened it again.

Tova was less diplomatic.

"WHAT KIND OF PSYCHO TEST IS THAT?!"

Vaelor bowed his head in apology.

"I had to be certain."

Kael clenched his fists, flame still pulsing under his skin.

"You nearly killed us!"

"You nearly died," Vaelor said quietly.

"Which means you nearly lived."

Kael exhaled shakily. "You're insane."

"Probably," Vaelor said.

Then he extended a hand.

"To face the Harrower… you will need more than your fire. You will need the truth of what you are."

Kael hesitated.

Tova grabbed his arm.

"Kael. Think before you—"

But Kael stepped forward.

Vaelor's hand hovered above his forehead.

"Let me show you," Vaelor whispered, "what the Flame remembers about you—

and what the Harrower fears."

Kael closed his eyes.

"Do it."

Vaelor touched him—

And the world shattered into light.
