Chapter 222 - So, You're the One They Call the Thunder King?

The winds of the Townlong Steppes, thick with smoke and the stench of blood, swept across the battered Pandaren defense line.

Amidst the broken ruins, emerald bamboo leaves were stained a dark crimson, and shattered pieces of ale jars were intermingled with broken monk staves, speaking to the sheer tragedy of the previous battle. The shadow of the resurrected Thunder King hung over this land like a heavy dark cloud, and the war drums of the Mogu rumbled once more, louder and more deafening than before, driving the defenders to the brink of despair.

This time, the Mogu Emperor had brought a far larger coalition. The bone-covered spears of the Zandalari Trolls gleamed coldly; Saurok crept along the rocky cliffs; Jinyu established hidden scouts within the streams; Quilboar howled as they brandished spiked clubs; and Hozen darted through the trees to hurl poisoned darts.

Gigantic dinosaurs from the Isle of Giants trampled forward with heavy, earth-shaking strides, while white-furred yaks lowered their heads, frost condensing on their pointed horns as they prepared to charge.

Compared to the purely Mogu army of the previous encounter, this force not only included their Zandalari Troll allies but even featured the incredibly fierce and notoriously untamable dinosaurs of the Isle of Giants. How had the Thunder King managed such a feat?

This was no longer a concern for Taran Zhu. The Pandaren had already sustained devastating casualties and possessed no means of halting an invasion of this scale. Yet they had no retreat; their homes lay directly behind them. Fighting to the death was the only way to cover the evacuation of the women and children; otherwise, total annihilation awaited them.

Reinforcements? Where were the reinforcements?

Master Zhi sighed softly. "Taran Zhu, as long as we hold our ground with resolve, there is a way. Lordaeron promised to send their coalition. His Majesty Arthas went to deal with the Sha, and he said he would dispatch a grand army to assist us. Just in case, I suggest you take charge of evacuating the wounded and the farmers to preserve the embers of our hope."

Taran Zhu was incensed. Though he knew the advice was well-intentioned, facing such an immense enemy, how would he be any different from a coward if he departed now?

"Master Zhi, you are far better suited for such matters. You should consult further with Lordaeron. I will do everything in my power to block the Mogu army. On the Thunder King's front, the four August Celestials will also do their best to buy us time. I am a warrior, not an administrator. If the opportunity arises, do not forget to bring some fine brew from the Stormstout family to my grave."

During the last clash, the defensive line had been torn open, and over half of the warriors had fallen beneath Mogu war hammers. Villages had been burned to the ground, and granaries plundered. Now, facing an enemy force several times their own size, the once-resilient defense line resembled a flickering candle in a violent gale.

Holding a staff inherited from his ancestors, Taran Zhu stood atop the watchtower at the highest point of the defense line, his brow furrowed deeply. Behind him, the remaining Pandaren warriors bore solemn expressions, some bandaging their wounds, others gripping their weapons tightly, their eyes reflecting a mixture of fear and unyielding defiance.

"Hold the line! For Pandaria!" Taran Zhu's voice was hoarse yet powerful, but the only response was the encroaching shrieks of the approaching enemy.

Seeing this, Master Zhi opened his mouth to speak, but his lips merely twitched before he ultimately remained silent, knowing his old friend's temperament all too well. There were only monks who fell in battle; there was no breed of cowards among them who would flee.

Sigh, sometimes a strategic retreat is also a tactical maneuver. Dying on this hill is hardly a wise path!

The battle erupted instantly. Mogu soldiers took the lead in charging forward, clad in heavy rock armor and brandishing gem-encrusted war hammers as they surged toward the Pandaren defense line like a tidal wave. Zandalari Shaman chanted spells from behind the ranks, sending bolts of lightning crashing onto the Pandaren shields, throwing off blinding sparks.

A giant dinosaur lowered its head, smashing its massive skull against the battlements. A corner of the already damaged wall collapsed instantly, burying several Pandaren warriors beneath the rubble before they could evade. The white-furred yaks launched a mass charge, breaking through the Pandaren vanguard, while the Quilboar swarmed in through the breach, biting and trampling in a frenzy that threw the defense line into immediate chaos.

Taran Zhu leapt down from the watchtower, his staff sweeping to wrap several wounded warriors in green healing mists. He channeled his Chi, unleashing a massive storm of bamboo leaves that sent the foremost Mogu soldiers flying.

Yet the enemy was simply too numerous, launching wave after wave of relentless charges.

Before long, the Pandaren warriors grew exhausted, casualties mounted, and their perimeter was steadily compressed. In this moment of despair, four brilliant pillars of light descended from the heavens as the four August Celestials joined the fray. Chi-Ji the Red Crane scorched the enemy with fire; Yu'lon the Jade Serpent mended her allies with soothing mists; Xuen the White Tiger tore through the enemy ranks with razor-sharp claws; and Niuzao the Black Ox formed a solid barrier with his massive form.

The intervention of the four Celestials briefly turned the tide of battle. However, Lei Shen was no longer the Mogu Emperor of old. Since his resurrection, his power had increased immensely. Shrouded in violent lightning and wielding the Lei Shen's Hammer, he stepped toward the center of the battlefield.

"Lowly beasts, you dare block my path?" Lei Shen sneered, slamming his hammer violently against the ground. A colossal pillar of lightning erupted upward, striking directly toward the four August Celestials.

The four Celestials united to block the strike, but the sheer force of the lightning drove them back repeatedly, golden blood spilling from their mouths. With a flash of lightning, Lei Shen materialized before Xuen, driving his hammer squarely into the White Tiger's shoulder. Xuen unleashed a piercing roar as he crashed heavily to the earth, his radiant glow gradually dimming.

After tens of thousands of years, this opponent was far stronger than before, and he now carried a faint, foul stench of an Old God—not of C'Thun, but seemingly of the artificial Old God, G'huun!

Turning around, Lei Shen engaged the other three Celestials. His rampant lightning continuously bombarded them, suppressing Chi-Ji's flames, dispersing Yu'lon's mists, and shattering Niuzao's barrier.

Ultimately, the four Celestials fell one by one, their light fading as they drifted into a deep slumber, leaving Taran Zhu to hold out entirely on his own.

Taran Zhu's staff was already covered in cracks, his body marred by numerous wounds as blood soaked through his robes. Back against a thousand-year-old pine, he looked at his fallen comrades around him, listening to the jeers and triumphant laughter of the enemy, his heart completely filled with despair.

The Mogu soldiers closed in step by step. Standing before him, Lei Shen looked down from his lofty height. "You are Taran Zhu, correct? Very well. If you surrender, you shall become my Chief Vanguard General, and all of Pandaria will ultimately belong to me."

Taran Zhu gripped his staff tightly, a look of absolute resolve flashing through his eyes as he prepared to channel his remaining strength into a final strike, when suddenly, a vast dark shadow appeared along the distant horizon.

"In your dreams! You vile, insolent beast, you have slaughtered so many of my people, and you expect me to surrender? Die!"

"What is that?" a Mogu soldier cried out in alarm.

Everyone looked up to see countless airborne battleships slicing through the sky, their hulls emblazoned with the crest of Lordaeron, their artillery ports gleaming coldly. On the ground, a massive coalition was rapidly closing in, led by a High Elf clad in silver-white robes. With her cold countenance and sharp gaze, she was none other than Syrenne, Commander of the Lordaeron coalition.

Behind her, the Naga Vanguard surged from the streams and lakes, their scales shimmering in the sunlight as they brandished tridents to launch a coordinated aquatic assault. The Orcs of the Warsong Clan charged forward with deafening howls, Grommash Hellscream brandishing Gorehowl, his armor stained with the blood of past battles, the Orc warriors wielding battleaxes without a shred of fear.

"Hahaha! So you're the one they call the Thunder King? I'll tear you apart! Have you introduced your head to my axe yet? What makes you think you're worthy of calling yourself a god?!"

The Dwarf Vanguard pushed their artillery tanks forward, aiming their cannons squarely at the Mogu formation amidst a deafening roar.

Human infantry clad in heavy armor advanced steadily in perfect formation, shields locked and longswords drawn. Priests moved among them, healing the wounded while remaining shielded by the infantry in a flawless display of coordination.

Blood Elves and Nightborne stood side by side, the arcane magic of the former intertwining with the shadow magic of the latter to form formidable magical barriers and offensive spells. The power of magic was truly world-shattering, particularly on the field of battle!

Night Elf archers remained concealed within the woods, sending down volleys of arrows that struck enemy vitals with pinpoint precision. Though they possessed no flashy magic, their archery, honed over thousands of years, allowed them to act as snipers, dispatching enemies instantly.

Most eye-catching of all was the massive swarm of Mantid, brandishing their razor-sharp forelimbs as they advanced in a dense, dark cloud that surged toward the Mogu coalition. In Azeroth, no race could match the sheer numbers of the insectoids; only fellow insectoids could hope to counter them.

The moment the Mantid appeared, the Mogu's defeat was sealed. Even without the Lordaeron coalition, the massive Mantid army alone was more than enough to inflict devastating casualties upon the Mogu forces, and they cared little if they depleted their entire frontline swarm; after all, the true Mantid Empress remained in the Dread Wastes!

"The reinforcements have arrived!" the remaining Pandaren warriors cheered, hope rekindling in their desperate eyes.

Syrenne raised her hand and gestured, her icy voice carrying across the battlefield. "Attack! Crush them!"

The moment her words fell, the Lordaeron coalition launched their general offensive. Human infantry charged first, their shields forming a solid wall that forcefully withstood the Mogu counterattack as their longswords swept out to harvest enemy lives. The Naga Vanguard launched their assault from the waterways, their tridents piercing Mogu armor as they manipulated water elements to whip up massive waves, dragging coastal enemies into the depths.

Such coordination was truly remarkable, as communication and trust among different races were always major hurdles. Only supreme command capability could foster such mutual trust, made possible in no small part by the systematic indoctrination and preaching of the Three Holy Sisters of the Scarlet Crusade—Whitemane, Lilian, and Abbendis—who elevated cohesion to its absolute peak.

Had they not been pregnant with Arthas's children and unable to take the field in person, this coordination would have been even more seamless. In their eyes, nothing in heaven or earth was more important than bearing their master's offspring.

The Elves' attacks were even more devastating. Blood Elf magi released volleys of arcane barrages, instantly shattering the totems of the Zandalari Shaman.

The Nightborne's shadow bolts darted through the enemy ranks, throwing them into panic and disarray. With their flawless archery, the Night Elf archers picked off the Mogu commanders one by one. The elegant and beautiful Elf maidens took great pleasure in sending their enemies to the grave.

The Dwarf Vanguard's artillery tanks rumbled incessantly, heavy shells slamming into the Mogu formation to rip open massive craters. Amidst flying shrapnel and splattered flesh, the once-arrogant Mogu soldiers were instantly scattered in complete disarray.

The Goblins cackled with maniacal glee, pushing giant bombs toward the enemy ranks. Once the fuses burned down, deafening explosions shook the earth, leveling entire swaths of the enemy forces.

Witnessing the devastation inflicted upon the enemy, this was undoubtedly a testament to the sheer brilliance of Goblin engineering; the engineering department would certainly have to allocate more funding to them rather than their Gnomish rivals!

The charge of the Mantid completely turned the tide of battle. Immense in number and entirely fearless, their razor-sharp forelimbs easily tore through the Mogu's rock armor. More terrifying still, wounded Mantid would detonate themselves, their explosive sacrifices consuming the surrounding enemies.

The dense swarm of Mantid swept across the battlefield like a plague of locusts, leaving the Mogu coalition's dead scattered everywhere. The bone spurs of the Zandalari Trolls were snapped by Mantid forelimbs; Saurok were torn to shreds; the Jinyu had nowhere to run under the swarm's encirclement; and the howls of the Quilboar and Hozen quickly turned to desperate wails. Though the giant dinosaurs were massive, they were scaled and bitten by countless Mantid until they crashed heavily to the ground, serving as sustenance for the swarm.

The once-invincible Mogu coalition was now in a state of total, chaotic rout. The arrogant soldiers lost every shred of their former bluster, fleeing frantically in all directions only to be cut down by the pursuing Lordaeron forces.

"How can this be? Where did these mongrels come from? I will slaughter you all! I am the Emperor of Pandaria, the Thunder King!"

Seeing his coalition crumble, Lei Shen's eyes overflowed with fury and indignation. Unleashing a thunderous roar, his lightning surged violently as he brandished his hammer, locking his gaze onto the beautiful and martial High Elf, charging directly toward the Lordaeron commander, Syrenne.

At that moment, a figure descended from the heavens, intercepting Lei Shen before he could reach Syrenne. Clad in golden armor, her countenance was stunningly beautiful, her form radiating the oppressive aura of a demigod—it was the eldest Princess of Lordaeron, Shandris.

"You dare call yourself a god? Insignificant worm! You have disrupted my travels with my father. You deserve to die, and die you shall!"

"Insolent girl!"

Infuriated, Lei Shen swung his hammer violently toward Shandris. The weapon carried a wild, destructive current of lightning. Shandris shifted her stance, easily evading the strike as the lightning blasted a massive crater into the ground.

Vaulting into the air, she drove a fist squarely into Lei Shen's chest. Caught off guard, the Emperor was sent stumbling back, spitting out a mouthful of blood. He stared at Shandris in utter disbelief, his eyes filled with shock! He had never expected this seemingly delicate Elven maiden to possess such staggering physical power.

The two immediately engaged in a fierce duel. Lei Shen unleashed continuous barrages of lightning, which Shandris avoided with agile, shifting movements—a technique reminiscent of a Demon Hunter's evasion. Hitting her was a victory in itself; and even if a strike landed, given her layered damage-reduction effects, it would likely feel like little more than a scratch.

Conversely, each of Shandris's strikes carried the raw power of a demigod. Crashing against Lei Shen's armor with dull, heavy booms, they caused deep fractures to spiderweb across the surface.

Under her full offensive output, it did not take long before Lei Shen felt his strength rapidly waning, his lightning dimming. He realized he was simply no match for Shandris. Driven to despair, he channeled his remaining strength into his hammer, intent on taking her down with him.

"Let us die together, wretched girl!"

Shandris had already read his intentions. With a sudden flash, she materialized behind Lei Shen, her hands gripping his shoulders as she exerted immense force. Lei Shen unleashed a piercing shriek as his chest armor was forcefully torn open, exposing the brilliant, radiant core of lightning within.

Shandris gripped the core and ripped it violently from his chest. Stripped of his core, Lei Shen's body instantly lost all power. He collapsed to the ground, his breath fading as the light in his eyes was extinguished once and for all.

The Mogu Emperor who had once ruled over Pandaria had met his end at the hands of Shandris.

With Lei Shen's death, the remaining Mogu soldiers lost all will to fight, either casting aside their weapons to surrender or fleeing in absolute panic.

The Lordaeron coalition did not pursue a policy of total extermination, yet they ensured the Mogu paid a devastating price. Ultimately, the Mogu coalition was completely dismantled, with only a tiny fraction of survivors managing to escape into the deep mountains of Pandaria, never daring to show their faces again.

The smoke over the Townlong Steppes gradually dispersed, and sunlight pierced the dark clouds to wash over the war-torn land. Taran Zhu walked over to Shandris and bowed deeply. "Our thanks to the Lordaeron coalition for their timely aid. Pandaria will never forget this kindness."

Shandris nodded slightly, her gaze drifting toward the horizon.

"It is over. Aunt Syrenne, I leave the rest to you. I'm going to find Father. Bye-bye."

"Safe travels, Your Highness."

A subtle smile graced Syrenne's usually stern countenance; her cold demeanor was reserved for others, while this smile was dedicated solely to her master.
