Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: The Crimson Eyes

The song of the sea ended.

Not abruptly.

It faded like the last note of a lullaby, leaving behind a silence so complete that every heartbeat upon the shore seemed impossibly loud.

The golden radiance surrounding the Keeper of the First Tide began to withdraw.

Its vast eyes remained fixed upon the eastern horizon.

Upon the darkness.

Upon the two crimson lights that neither blinked nor wavered.

⸻

Seloria felt Lyrielle's hand grow cold.

"You know what that is."

It was not a question.

Lyrielle swallowed.

"No."

"But…"

She pressed a trembling hand against her chest.

"My soul remembers being afraid."

⸻

The crimson eyes did not move.

They simply watched.

Miles away.

Beyond reefs untouched by sunlight.

Beyond the deepest trenches where even the oldest whales never ventured.

Watching.

Patiently.

As though waiting for someone else to remember first.

⸻

The Keeper lowered its head.

A sorrow older than kingdoms settled into its voice.

"Its name has never been spoken."

"For to name it…"

The ancient guardian paused.

"…is to invite it nearer."

The Returned instinctively stepped backward.

Even the sea itself retreated several metres from the shoreline.

The tide…

was afraid.

⸻

Seloria frowned.

"How can something have no name?"

The Keeper answered quietly.

"Because it refused one."

"It believed names were chains."

"It believed memory was weakness."

"It believed love was the first lie."

The words chilled the night more than any winter wind.

⸻

Lyrielle looked toward the horizon.

"Then what is it?"

The Keeper's golden eyes closed briefly.

"The First Forgetting."

⸻

Those words rippled across the water.

Every Returned shuddered.

The flowers blooming along the shore folded their petals.

Even the stars seemed to dim.

⸻

Long before the first kingdom…

Long before the First Queen knelt beside the sea…

Before grief had become an ocean…

There had existed two ancient powers.

One gathered.

One erased.

One remembered.

One consumed.

The Keeper had preserved every name entrusted to the tides.

The First Forgetting had wandered the newborn world, believing that existence itself was pain.

If nothing remained…

Nothing could suffer.

If no one remembered…

No one could grieve.

⸻

"It wanted mercy," Lyrielle whispered.

The Keeper inclined its head.

"At first."

"It believed oblivion was kindness."

"But centuries changed conviction into hunger."

"It no longer wishes to end pain."

"It wishes to end identity."

⸻

Seloria stepped protectively before Lyrielle.

"Then we'll stop it."

The Keeper regarded her with gentle admiration.

"You speak as though it were a storm."

"It is older than oceans."

"It has watched mountains rise."

"It remembers the first language ever forgotten."

⸻

The crimson eyes disappeared.

Not because the creature had gone.

Because it had descended.

Something enormous shifted beneath the sea floor.

The earth itself trembled.

Tiny cracks spread across the wet sand before sealing once more.

The villagers cried out.

Children clung to their parents.

The Returned looked toward Lyrielle.

Not in fear.

In hope.

⸻

One of them—a young man whose face had only recently become whole—stepped forward.

"If memory gave me back my name…"

He looked toward the distant darkness.

"…then I will remember."

Another woman joined him.

"So will I."

An elderly fisherman approached.

"I've forgotten more than I can recall."

He smiled sadly.

"But I'll protect what remains."

Soon more voices followed.

Quiet.

Ordinary.

Human.

Not warriors.

Not heroes.

Just people.

Choosing remembrance.

⸻

Lyrielle watched them.

Tears glimmered in her eyes.

"It isn't strength that opposes forgetting."

She smiled faintly.

"It's people refusing to let go of one another."

The Keeper's golden light brightened.

"Now you understand."

⸻

A breeze crossed the shore.

Warm.

Gentle.

It carried the scent of lavender.

Seloria blinked.

"There aren't any lavender fields near the coast."

Lyrielle inhaled slowly.

"I know that fragrance…"

She closed her eyes.

Suddenly…

she saw another vision.

Not from the sea.

From somewhere beyond it.

A quiet garden bathed in morning light.

A woman she had never met knelt among white flowers.

She looked up and smiled.

Not at Lyrielle.

At someone standing behind her.

Then the vision vanished.

Lyrielle staggered.

Seloria caught her.

"What did you see?"

"I…"

She frowned.

"It wasn't one of my memories."

The Keeper looked thoughtful.

"No."

"It was someone else's."

⸻

The ancient guardian gazed toward the heavens.

"The First Forgetting has begun reaching beyond the sea."

Seloria's expression darkened.

"What does that mean?"

The Keeper answered gravely.

"Until now…"

"…it could erase only what the ocean held."

A long silence followed.

Then:

"Now it has learned to touch the memories of the living."

⸻

At that exact moment…

In a village hundreds of miles inland…

An old woman paused while looking at a faded portrait.

She smiled kindly.

Then frowned.

"…Who is this?"

Her daughter stared at her.

"Mama…"

"That's Father."

The old woman looked again.

The face in the photograph had become unfamiliar.

She searched desperately for recognition.

None came.

"I…"

"I'm sorry."

"I don't remember loving him."

⸻

Back upon the shore, Lyrielle's heart clenched violently.

She hadn't seen the scene.

But she felt it.

A thread had snapped somewhere in the tapestry of the world.

Someone had been forgotten.

Not by death.

By memory itself.

The crimson eyes opened once more beyond the horizon.

This time…

they were just a little closer.
