One day, Zane Blackwood was at his studio, talking with his director, Christopher Nolan, about their new movie, Memories. Suddenly, his phone rang. It was his CEO, Victor.
"What?" Zane said, sounding surprised. "The Carlos Fund? You mean, the Carlos Fund, from Mexico?"
"Yes, that's the one," Victor said over the phone.
Zane frowned, thinking hard. "In that case, come over to the studio. We'll talk about it here."
"Okay, boss."
When the boss asks you to come over, you come over. Plus, this sounded important.
After Zane hung up, Christopher Nolan asked, "Boss, did something happen?"
Zane didn't hide it. "A small situation. You've heard of the big telecom tycoon from Mexico, Carlos Slim, right?"
"Of course!" Nolan said. "He's the richest man in his country! He's always on the top of the world's richest people lists. How could I not know him?"
And he was right. Carlos Slim was a huge deal. He was the boss of giant phone companies and owned businesses all over the world. In the future, he would even become the richest man in the world, richer than Bill Gates. He was a true economic powerhouse.
And now, his family's company, the Carlos Fund, was contacting Zane's entertainment group.
Soon, Victor arrived and explained everything.
He had received a meeting request that morning. The person who wanted to meet was Ricardo Slim—the eldest grandson of the billionaire, Carlos Slim. When the grandson of someone that powerful wants to meet, you take it very seriously.
"Victor," Zane asked, "are you saying that Ricardo wants to invest in our two new movies, 300 and Memories?"
"Yes, boss," Victor said, his face serious. "And I think we should really think about it. His family has a ton of influence in Mexico and all of South America. If we work with them, it could be a huge help in building our movie distribution network all over the world."
Zane nodded, thinking.
Logically, Zane hated letting other people invest in his movies. He liked to "eat alone." Why would he share his money, especially when he knew the movie was going to be a big hit?
But this... this was different.
Zane knew that building a global movie company was hard. It wasn't just about money. You needed help from the governments in other countries. You needed to know powerful people.
If you just showed up in another country and said, "I want to build a movie network," the local government might say, "Sure, just fill out this application. We'll get back to you... in a few years." They could make you wait forever and waste all your money.
Most countries like to protect their own local businesses. They didn't want a big American company coming in and taking all the profits.
"Boss," Victor said, "behind this 'Carlos Fund' is Carlos Slim. If his grandson invests in our movies... I can't promise anything, but I bet building our movie network in Mexico would be super easy. This is a golden opportunity!"
Victor kept trying to convince his boss.
How would Zane decide?
Of course he would agree! This was about his global plan. In Mexico, was there anyone more powerful than Carlos Slim? No. Not one.
He was the richest man and had huge political connections. He was friends with presidents!
"Getting to know a family this powerful is a huge opportunity," Zane thought. "Even if it's just his grandson, we have to take it."
But... even though Zane would agree, he was still going to be smart about it. He wasn't just going to give away his profits for free.
He would use a little "Hollywood math."
He would tell them the budget for Memories was $12 million (even though it was really $5 million). And he'd tell them the budget for 300 was $80 million (even though it was really $60 million).
This was a common trick in Hollywood. It was a smart, and perfectly legal, way to deal with outside investors. It meant they would get a smaller piece of the real profits.
