The team had found their King Leonidas. Now it was time to find his Queen. Many talented actresses came to try out.
First up was Jennifer Connelly. She was 27 and had been famous since she was a kid in the movie Once Upon a Time in America. She had a sweet face and real acting skills.
But after her audition, Zane just shook his head, looking almost sad to say it.
"I'm sorry, Jennifer," he said, his voice gentle. "Your performance just... it didn't move me. It wasn't quite right for this part."
The beautiful actress looked so sad. She thanked him politely and got ready to leave. She had been famous, but for the last few years, she just couldn't seem to get a good part.
"Wait!" Zane called out, just as she was about to open the door.
"Mr. Blackwood?" she asked, turning around with a look of surprise and hope.
"You're not right for the Queen," Zane said seriously, but with a kind look in his eyes. "But, my company, Wald Pictures, is starting a new movie next Tuesday. It's called Memories. I was wondering... would you be interested in auditioning for the female lead in that movie?"
"Huh?"
She was stunned for a second, and then her face lit up with a giant, joyful smile. "I'm interested! Yes! Thank you so much, Mr. Blackwood!"
It was a huge opportunity for her. She was so happy!
Next up was Cameron Diaz. She was already a star from movies like The Mask and My Best Friend's Wedding.
After her audition, Zane, Zack, and Kevin all looked at each other.
"Pending," Zane said. "Let's put her on the 'maybe' list."
She looked the part and her acting was good. Plus, she wouldn't cost too much money.
"If we don't find anyone better, I'd be happy to hire her," Zack Snyder said.
For the next few hours, they watched many other actresses.
Kate Beckinsale (who would one day be the star of Underworld).
Vera Farmiga (who would be in The Departed and Godzilla 2).
Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron.
When Angelina Jolie walked in, Zane couldn't help but feel a little... tempted. She had also come to try out for the Queen. She was a great choice and could do action movies. Plus, they had a... "history."
But in the end, Angelina couldn't take the part. She was already busy working on another movie, Girl, Interrupted.
Finally, Zane looked at his good friend, Charlize, and smiled. "Charlize, the role of the Queen of Sparta is yours. Is that okay?"
"No problem," she replied, with a simple, decisive nod.
She had been one of the best actresses all day. And, since she and Zane were friends, and all the top choices were about equal, he was happy to give the part to her. Plus, her salary was affordable!
They had found their King and Queen in a single day! The team was very pleased.
...
Later, Matt Damon came back in.
"Mr. Matt Damon," Zane said, his voice polite but firm, "I'm sorry, but we've already found the perfect actor for King Leonidas."
"That's perfectly alright, Mr. Blackwood," Matt said with a big, hearty smile. He didn't look disappointed at all.
This surprised Zane. He and Matt had a bit of a bad history from Zane's first movie. He was surprised Matt had even come to the audition.
"Mr. Blackwood," Matt said, "I'm a huge fan of Director Snyder's work. I loved The Human Purge Project. If you don't mind, I'd be willing to do a small 'cameo' role in 300. Just for fun. Maybe I could play a Spartan officer?"
A cameo? What was he up to?
Zane's mind raced. He was smart and figured it out in a few seconds.
He wants to be friends again!
Zane was right. Wald Pictures was getting bigger and richer every day. Matt Damon was smart enough to know he shouldn't be enemies with Zane. He was trying to mend fences.
What could Zane do? A famous star wanted to be in his movie for free!
"Of course," Zane said with a welcoming smile. "We'd be honored to have you."
But the surprises weren't over.
"What?!"
Zane looked up, shocked, at Keanu Reeves, who had come back, too.
"You said you want to do a cameo?" Zane asked. "Man, you can't be serious."
This was Keanu Reeves! One of the most handsome and popular actors in the world!
"Zane, you heard me right," Keanu said with his cool, friendly smile. "Actually, my friend Johnny Depp called me before the audition. He asked me to see if he could get a cameo in 300, too."
Darn!
Zane was flooded with surprise. Matt Damon... Keanu Reeves... and Johnny Depp all wanted to be in his movie? This was fantastic news! It would be amazing promotion for 300!
Over the next few days, they finished all the casting. Zane also spotted another name on the list that made him smile: Michael Fassbender, the future young Magneto. He would be playing a Spartan warrior, just like he did in Zane's old life.
