On December 3, 1997, at the main office of the Golden Dawn Entertainment Group, Zane Blackwood held the company's first big, year-end meeting.
All the top bosses were there:
Victor Jones (the CEO of the whole group)
Martha (the Chief Financial Officer)
Donna (the President of the UPN TV Network)
Alexander (the UPN Channel Director)
Kevin Fitch (the Vice President of Wald Pictures)
Stephen Solenberg (the President of the Animation Studio)
David Messer (the Vice President of the Animation Studio)
James Shawn (the President of the 'SpongeBob's Secret Chest' stores)
Domino (the Director of the Music Company) ...and a few others. In total, there were fifteen bosses.
Zane, as the main chairman of the whole group, naturally sat at the head of the big table.
"Everyone," Zane started, his voice calm and friendly, "before we begin the meeting, I have a few announcements about new jobs and promotions."
Hearing this, everyone in the room suddenly sat up straight. They were startled. They didn't expect Zane to start with such big news! New jobs meant promotions, pay raises, and more power. Everyone was paying very close attention.
Only Victor, the CEO, looked calm. He and Zane had already talked about this.
"First," Zane announced, "Ms. Donna Langlei, the president of the UPN Television Network, is being promoted to Senior Vice President of the entire Golden Dawn Group. She will also continue to be the president of UPN."
As soon as he said it, everyone was stunned.
Martha, the money boss, whispered, "My gosh. That means Donna is now the third most powerful person in the whole company, right after Mr. Blackwood and Mr. Jones."
But these were all smart people. They quickly recovered and started clapping.
"Congratulations, Ms. Donna," Victor said, being the first to congratulate her.
"Thank you," Donna said. She was so excited she was almost beaming.
She was so happy because she was a woman. In the big Hollywood studios, almost all the top, senior jobs were held by men. It was very, very hard for a woman to get to the top. Gender discrimination was a real problem in Hollywood.
"Thank you, Mr. Blackwood, for trusting me," Donna said, turning to Zane. She knew who had given her this amazing chance. "I will work hard and not let you down."
Zane just smiled, a warm, proud smile. "No need to thank me, Donna. This is what you've earned. You've done an amazing job at UPN this past year, and you deserve it."
Zane was very happy with her work. She had fired lazy workers, hired over 200 new, smart people, and made the TV network's channels (like the kids' channel and movie channel) much better.
Even without "SpongeBob" and "America's Got Talent," UPN was now a top-ten cable TV network in America. That was a huge deal. Zane knew that without a great leader like Donna, this would have never happened.
"Ahem!" Zane cleared his throat, and the room went quiet again. "Time to announce the second appointment."
He looked around the room and his eyes landed on Alexander. "The second appointment is for Alexander... Povich Sanali Sergey." Zane smiled. "Alexander, your name is certainly long enough!"
Alexander tensed up. He couldn't believe his name was being called. He was so nervous!
"Alexander, don't be nervous," Zane said with a friendly laugh. "Congratulations. You are being moved from UPN and will now be the Director of the Chairman's Office. That means you'll be my new chief assistant."
Alexander, who was from Russia, shot up from his seat, his face full of pure joy. "Thank you, boss! Thank you!" He was usually so calm, but now he was just ecstatic.
All the other bosses in the room looked at him with envy.
"He's so lucky," one of them whispered. "I'd love to be the chairman's chief assistant."
Working at the TV network was a good job, but working directly for Zane? That was like being a central official right next to the emperor. It was a much bigger deal.
"Keep up the great work, Alexander," Zane said, encouraging him. "I believe you're going to do amazing things in this new job."
Zane had thought about this for a long time. His company was getting bigger and bigger. He was planning to add sports, games, and books. He was only one person, not a god. He couldn't do it all by himself. He needed a great assistant and a strong team to help him. Alexander was smart, had tons of experience, and was the perfect person for the job.
The room was now buzzing with excitement after the two big promotions. Everyone was wondering, "Am I next? Am I going to get a promotion?"
Zane and Victor looked at each other and shared a secret, knowing smile.
Zane thought to himself, "They're all so excited now... but what will they do if I tell them that next year, everyone is getting stock options and a share of the profits?"
"They'd probably faint from happiness!"
