Alina sighed, a heavy, characteristic sound that vibrated through her chest against mine. She looked away.
"That... is the only thing I can't tell you."
My brows drew together, but before I could accuse her of breaking Rule Number One within minutes, her hands pressed lightly against my shoulders.
"It's not because I don't want to. Honestly? I want nothing more than to tell you everything. But..." She paused, her face twisted in irritation. "It isn't my place to tell you."
Now, I was thoroughly confused.
When I asked about the red animal, I hadn't cared about a name. I wanted to know how she had handled it. How Alina Kingsley, of all people, had walked away calmly and left the other person alive.
But from the way she spoke, she hadn't just spared them. It was almost as if she was trying to protect them, but that didn't make sense. Who was she trying to protect from?
