Chapter CII: The Masteral Complex, Part 2
The morning in Hoia Baciu Cavern breaks beneath a shroud of gray. Mist curls through the courtyard like restless spirits, and the ancient stones glisten with dew that never seems to dry. Deep beneath, the Crypt of Vitae stirs awake again — its heartbeat echoing faintly like a slumbering giant.
Nathaniel Cross stands before a cracked mirror in his quarters, his reflection flickering between human and something not. His irises glow faintly red before fading. He breathes in deeply, the scent of old parchment and dust filling his lungs.
"I'm getting used to it," he murmurs. "But I don't know if that's a good thing."
He tightens his gloves and descends toward the crypt where Dracula waits. The torches flicker blue, their flames alive with cold fire.
"You're punctual," the Count says without turning, his tone both approval and command. "That means you're ready for something more dangerous."
Nathaniel steps into the circle of runes carved into the floor. The shadows stretch as though bowing before the two figures.
"I can already shift," Nathaniel says. "Rat. Cat. Wolf. Even human forms now."
Dracula's crimson eyes gleam. "Then today, you learn the eyes."
"The eyes?"
"The gaze that freezes," Dracula explains, voice low and deliberate. "An art reserved for those who've already broken their flesh to the will of the night. With your stare, you will command stillness — not illusion, not paralysis, but a pure lock of the soul."
He steps closer, his presence heavy as the crypt's air. "When a vampire focuses on a target, the mind releases a pulse through the optic link. That pulse commands the blood within another to stop moving — briefly, harmlessly, but utterly still. No breath. No heartbeat. No sound."
Nathaniel blinks. "So... I just stare at someone and they freeze?"
Dracula smirks faintly. "If only you were that good."
He gestures toward a group of training mannequins made of enchanted flesh and bone. "Try."
Nathaniel exhales and focuses on one. His pupils expand unnaturally. The torches dim, and faint red sparks flicker from his irises. But the mannequin only twitches — then bursts into dust.
Nathaniel stumbles back. "That wasn't supposed to happen, right?"
Dracula folds his arms. "You froze its cells completely. A success... but with reckless precision."
"Reckless?"
"Your eyes bulged," Dracula says bluntly. "If you continued, they would have burst. Control, not force, Cross."
Nathaniel winces, rubbing his temples. "Got it. No exploding eyeballs."
Dracula sighs — centuries of patience pressed into one long breath. "Try again. This time, narrow your thoughts. Do not look — lock. Fix on your target and think of nothing but stillness."
Nathaniel nods and focuses again, his gaze sharpening. His pupils dilate. For a moment, nothing happens — and then, the mannequin halts mid-motion. The torches' flames freeze mid-flicker, the air itself pausing.
Dracula's smile is faint, predatory. "Excellent."
Nathaniel keeps his stare. "So when someone's frozen, does... their body stop too? Like, breathing, heartbeat, everything?"
Dracula turns, his cloak swirling like living smoke. "Yes. But fear not. It is like ice — a suspension, not death. Their essence remains trapped in that instant, unable to move, unable to die."
Nathaniel frowns. "Creepy, but... useful."
Dracula gestures toward the training hall where Kingsley and Edison spar. "Prove it."
Nathaniel focuses, narrowing his eyes toward them. A shimmer crosses his vision — invisible energy slicing through the air like threads of frost. Kingsley freezes mid-strike, Edison halts mid-laugh. Both are statues in time.
Dracula observes, impressed. "You are a natural. Remember, though — the gaze works only on mortals and weak-willed beings. Against vampires, its power wanes."
Nathaniel grins faintly. "Good to know. I'd hate to freeze you by accident."
Dracula gives a sharp glare, and Nathaniel quickly drops the smile. "Joking. Totally joking."
Dracula waves his hand, signaling him. "Unfreeze them."
Nathaniel focuses again, eyes glowing faintly blue this time. The tension breaks — Kingsley blinks, Edison stumbles forward, confused.
"What the hell just happened?" Edison says, shaking his arms.
Kingsley glares. "Did you just lag reality?"
Nathaniel smirks. "Something like that."
"Show-off," Kingsley mutters, though a grin breaks through.
Dracula turns. "Good. Now you understand the essence of stillness. It is not merely control of motion — it is dominion over time itself, however briefly. Use it wisely."
Elsewhere, the crypt hums with life as training continues.
Theo's chamber is a cathedral of mirrors. Each reflection refracts light like living prisms. His mentor, Arlen, stands still, his silver eyes glowing faintly. "You have mastered the creation of light weapons," he says. "Now, you must learn their pulse."
"Pulse?" Theo asks.
"Light is not constant. It breathes, just as you do. It can heal or destroy depending on rhythm. You will learn to make it beat with your will."
Theo grins. "So... like a strobe effect?"
Arlen frowns. "I know not your strange mortal humor, but... yes."
Theo closes his eyes and breathes. A sphere of light forms between his hands, pulsing faintly with his heartbeat. Each pulse grows stronger until the light beats like a heart, sending ripples across the chamber. The mirrors shimmer with radiance.
"That's it," Arlen says softly. "That rhythm — that is life."
Meanwhile, Kingsley and Edison's training escalates. The chamber rumbles with the clash of lightning and water. Kingsley, drenched in sweat, summons bolts that dance across the air, their glow painting scars on the obsidian. Edison spins with torrents of mist and arcs of electricity, forming a storm of movement.
Their mentors watch from above. "They have learned power," one says. "Now they must learn harmony."
As lightning meets water, the two forces merge, forming vapor — steam rising like ghosts. For a moment, both young men laugh, exhilarated and alive.
Pauline and Maisie, in another cavern, spin through their drills. Their blades gleam white-hot, their acrobatics sharp as breath. They vault from pillars, twist through air, strike, land — their grace now indistinguishable from their lethality.
Their mentor calls, "Speed. Flow. You are assassins now — silence in motion."
Maisie lands lightly, panting. "And we thought ballet was hard."
Pauline grins. "At least here, missing a step doesn't just mean a bruise."
Their laughter cuts through the darkness, echoing faintly.
By afternoon, the group gathers again in the grand hall for rest. The air hums softly with power — the scent of ozone, iron, and sweat blending like incense.
Theo stretches, tossing a small light orb between his hands. "So, how'd everyone's torture session go?"
Kingsley crosses his arms, electricity crackling around him. "I nearly electrocuted myself five times. Progress."
Edison laughs. "You call that progress? I turned the entire room into a fog sauna."
Maisie twirls a dagger effortlessly. "We spent two hours flipping through spikes. I think my spine's shorter now."
Pauline smirks. "At least we look cool doing it."
Theo looks to Nathaniel. "And you, Cross? You've been quiet."
Nathaniel leans back against a pillar, eyes faintly glowing red. "Learned how to freeze people with my eyes."
The others stare.
Theo bursts out laughing. "Bro, you're literally a vampire Medusa!"
Edison snickers. "Next thing you know, he's blinking and stopping time."
Nathaniel smirks. "Already tried. Didn't end well for the mannequin."
Pauline tilts her head. "You mean it exploded?"
Nathaniel nods. "Yup."
Maisie winces. "Remind me not to make eye contact when you're mad."
Theo conjures a light blade and waves it jokingly. "Between my light sabers, his freeze stare, and Kingsley's lightning arms, we're like an anime team-up waiting to happen."
Kingsley rolls his eyes. "Don't flatter yourself, Skywalker."
"Hey, I'm more like Killua with a glow stick!"
Dracula passes by silently as the group erupts in laughter. For a fleeting second, his gaze softens — faint amusement ghosting across his face before he vanishes into shadow again.
They continue laughing, teasing, comparing abilities to cartoons and memes, their exhaustion dissolving into camaraderie.
Eventually, the torches shift color — from orange to crimson. The signal for the next phase.
Nathaniel rises, stretching. "Guess break time's over."
Theo spins his light spear once more, the hum echoing in the quiet. "Yeah. Back to the grind."
Edison cracks his neck. "Let's make this count."
The group disperses into their separate chambers again, their footsteps echoing across the obsidian halls.
As Nathaniel walks toward his, he glances once more at the floor — feeling the faint thrum of the crypt beneath. A whisper curls through the silence, faint as breath:
You are learning... faster than the night itself.
He pauses, shivers, and clenches his fists. "Then I'll outpace it."
The torches flare. The Crypt of Vitae comes alive again — the sound of power, the rhythm of growth, the pulse of something greater waking beneath it all.
And high above, the storm clouds gather once more, swirling around the castle spires as if the heavens themselves are watching the birth of a new force.
Nathaniel steps forward into the darkness, his shadow long and sharp, his eyes glinting with a balance between man and monster.
For the first time, he feels not cursed — but chosen.
And in the depths of the ancient crypt, unseen and waiting, something smiles.
To be continued...
