Chapter 28 - Story–1: Mighty Ξchø (chapter 27)

Chapter 27: Mighty Echo

As the very first rays of morning light broke over the edge of the world beyond the academy's grounds, a shaft of warm golden light fell upon the Grand Academy of Aetheria from the heavens above. All the hustle and bustle had ceased for but an instant on the grounds as all of creation held its breath after going through so much hardship, bravery, and heart.

Echo and Soso entered the Great Academy of Aetheria through the main gate, linked together hand in hand.

Already the news of their victory against the Abyssal Sect had spread throughout the entire academy and present on everyone's lips was disbelief and awe.

"Did you see that boy!? He fought the Abyssal Sect without any MAGIK!!!"

"I heard he used that thing called Overdrive and fought like a thunderstorm in the middle of a hurricane!!!"

Although Echo held his head up high while walking, he was also cognizant of all the people around him who had given him the stink eye as he walked by as well as all the murmurs of disbelief and admiration directed toward him.

Echo went from being at the bottom of the rankings at the academy and being laughed at for zero MAGIK to being viewed with respect and even fear by the same people for his powers, talent, and bravery.

Soso's father proudly stood behind him in silence. His expression was stern, but there was a small hint in his eye of pride and acceptance. The boy that once made him question himself was now standing on equal footing with the strongest students at the academy.

At the far end of the courtyard, the headmaster of the academy stood with his back to the students, waiting for them to arrive. Senior professors and high-ranking magicians surrounded him and watched in silence as Echo and Soso approached from opposite sides of the courtyard.

The headmaster studied Echo. His gaze was probing and observant, evaluating every motion of Echo's body. The headmaster took time to consider Echo's posture. He was calm, controlled, and had an average overdrive aura around him that seemed to be part of him now.

"Echo," the headmaster said. His voice carried like a sonic boom across the courtyard.

"You have accomplished something that no one thought could happen at the academy. You do not possess magic, yet you saved lives, halted the rise of a demon lord, and faced a tremendous number of adversities with bravery and intelligence. You earned both the recognition of the academy and the world."

The crowd erupted in cheers.

Some who previously derided him bowed before him.

Others murmured to each other in disbelief that someone without magic could have grown to such power.

Soso's grip tightened around Echo's arm.

Proud and warm, her pride shone through with her smile.

"I am going to give you an opportunity to become something that I have always thought you could be… much more."

The calm, steady smile on Echo's face indicated he was no longer drawing upon adrenaline for his strength — he was now drawing upon a place of peace and mastery.

"Echo, you have been my source of strength. You have been the reason I have kept going."

The courtyard again became silent while the headmaster raised his voice. "Echo, your strength is much more than magic. You have shown the world that real strength, real power, lies in our courage, intelligence, and heart. From this moment forward, you will no longer just be a student. From this moment forward, you will be referred to as Mighty Echo, a warrior and scholar of equal status."

Gasps and applause from everyone filled the courtyard.

The students and teachers started to show their respect by stepping forward.

In the courtyard, Echo's Overdrive displayed a very faint pulse of energy — no longer was it wild and chaotic like it was earlier — now it was steady, controlled, and in complete alignment.

It was no longer a weapon of last resort, but rather as a source of balance, clarity, and advancement in your development.

Soso's father began to walk toward Echo, his heavy boots echoing against the stone of the courtyard. He did not have a happy expression on his face — but his eyes reflected his kind nature.

As he spoke, slowly but deliberately, he said: "Echo, in saving my child you have not only saved her, but you have also shown me what it means to be truly strong. I now see you not just as Soso's partner, but as a man of honour and courage."

He offered Echo his hand. It was a simple gesture, albeit very powerful, and it cut through years of pride and judgement.

Echo deeply bowed before him and took his hand. "Thank you, sir. I will always protect her."

Soso's father smiled gently — a smile that conveyed more than words could describe.

The energy of the grounds of the academy burst again.

Nearby, students were sparring and attempting to replicate Echo's style of fluid movement, which they had witnessed during the battle.

Professors were debating how Echo was able to perform his Overdrive technique; they could not comprehend how anyone without magic could achieve the amount of control that Echo was able to exercise.

Nobles who had turned their backs on Echo were now coming to greet him with wonderment and respect in their eyes.

Echo stood upon the raised platform in the centre of the courtyard, with Soso standing beside him.

The first rays of morning sun shone down on Echo's stance, movement, and calm force of character.

Every scar on his body, every stripe of muscle, every breath that he took demonstrated the incredible journey of hardship, learning, and growing that he had been on.

He scanned the crowd with steadiness in his eyes, a sense of calmness and quiet confidence among the crowd. "This is what moving with perseverance + determination can create," Echo said quietly to himself.

"Overdrive is not chaotic anymore; it is my will and my strength, and now it is under control." He inhaled deeply, then began to demonstrate to those gathered around him his present state — not to show off or be boastful, but rather as proof of who he has become.

His body flowed with smoothness, performing rolls, flips, and strikes that gave the impression they were from a real-life combat experience.

His movements were fluid, and yet sharp; deliberate movements of speed and grace caught everyone's attention.

He was not being powered by magic; it was an application of skill, awareness, and balance. The crowd was silent in awe.

"How does he move like that?" A voice from the crowd gasped.

"There is no magic, but he is stronger than most who have it," another voice said, whispering back.

Soso stepped forward, touched Echo on the shoulder gently with one hand and said, "You have always been my guardian. At this moment, every one of them sees the same person I have always seen in you."

He smiled to himself with calmness and warmth. The Overdrive that had once consumed him was now glowing inside of him quietly (not as a storm) but rather as a steady/constant flame.

As sunlight streamed through the courtyard, painting the stone walls through late afternoon, the two stood side by side: together as one, honored by all.

The Echo, with its overdrive and strength, signified discipline and self-control; although it was a legend, the Echo's ascent from its original lowly rank was due to the power of its heart, its indomitable spirit, not any kind of magic.

"Together," he said softly to Soso, "we are more powerful than either light or dark."

Though he spoke in an even, confident tone, his smile was a very small one.

"This isn't the end, Soso; it is only the beginning; whatever phase of our journey is ahead, we will remain together."

The courtyard erupted into cheers and applause that rang all around.

The students were abuzz with excitement as they pushed closer for an opportunity to witness Epic Echo, the one whose exceeding courage broke set limits.

The teachers paid reverence and honor by addressing him as "Sir Mysterious Echo," recognizing that his existence was more profound and greater than blood or title.

The name that had been given had spread quickly, with whispers in awe, excellence, admiration, and pride melding together as one: "Mysterious Echo."

Soso put her head close, so only he could hear her voice.

"We've been through shadows, fears, and even death," she said with a smile on her face. "Now we are free."

Echo held her hand, his fingers interlocking with hers. He held her hand with a firm warm grip, silently promising her that he would be there for her now and forever.

"Ech!" she teased.

Echo laughed softly but stared deeply into Soso's eyes. "Mighty or not, you're all I need to be whole, Soso."

As the sun rose, they were both encased in the brilliant light that flooded the academy's grounds.

The shadows of their past had finally vanished completely.

What had once been a curse (Overdrive) was now a symbol of strength and peace.

Courage, love, and intelligence had all played a part in getting Echo to where he was now and had added to his ability to find the balance of power and strength within himself.

The academy witnessed it all. All of the students, all the teachers, all of the nobles had seen the same thing — not only strength but an undeniable truth:

Strength never has meaning without heart.

And because of that truth, history would tell the tale of Echo — a boy who arose without magic, fought for love and justice, and forever changed the definition of strength.

He was no longer simply Echo.

He became Mighty Echo.

As Echo and Soso walked hand in hand away from the courtyard, the cheers increased in volume.

Facing death, darkness and doubt, they triumphed.

As they left the academy, its light shone with pride, telling tales of the boy who had dared to do the impossible.

Moving forward together toward whatever came next, whether it was peace, challenge, or fate; Soso felt joyfully happy in saying, "I will always have faith in you."

Echo responded with calmness as he said, "And I will always keep you safe; that is my vow."

With this exchange, the sun faded quickly down the path behind them, leaving a legacy that would last forever.

Mighty Echo changed from being a name to being a representation of Spirit, Strength, Love conquering all things, Even those which have never been to man.
