The MAG 796FD uses Mitsubishi Diamondtron's original picture tube, which is quite similar to the Trinitron technology from Sony. There's no question about its color performance and clarity, and in an era where resolutions were generally 1024*768 or even 800*600, 1600*1200 was nothing short of astounding.
The slight difference is that the former uses a single-gun three-beam system, while the latter uses a three-gun three-beam system, but the actual experience shows minimal difference.
However, because of this small difference and what some perceive as a "stupidity tax," Sony's 17-inch Trinitron monitor is significantly more expensive. The extra money could be better spent investing in other quality components.
