"Naruto: Ice God"Chapter 116: Scheming
With peace established between Konoha and Iwagakure, things should have been moving in a positive direction.
According to Hiruzen's plan, all he needed to do next was deploy the forces led by Jiraiya and Minato against Kirigakure, using swift decisive action to eliminate the Mist ninja entrenched within their borders, then use superior numbers to confront Kumogakure.
However, just as the newly inaugurated Fourth Raikage returned to his village, he appeared once again at Konoha's border with his ninja forces.
This forced Hiruzen to dispatch Minato toward Kumogakure's front while sending Feng Bai's squad to reinforce the battle against Kirigakure.
"I can't shake this uneasy feeling."
Before Feng Bai could enjoy even a few days of rest, he found himself on the battlefield once again with his squad. The shuriken and kunai occasionally emerging from the dense mist gave him firsthand experience of the Mist ninja's tactics—so different from those of the Cloud and Stone ninja.
"But this won't stop me—Wind Release: Vacuum Great Sphere!"
Dodging a shuriken from behind purely on instinct, Feng Bai rapidly formed hand seals, took a deep breath, and expelled a massive wind projectile from his mouth.
The powerful wind technique easily dispersed the thick mist ahead, exposing the Mist ninja caught completely off guard.
"Lightning Release: Thunder Net!" "Fire Release: Phoenix Sage Flower Nail Crimson!"
Kakashi and Obito, perfectly synchronized with Feng Bai, launched their attacks instantly, successfully eliminating several Mist ninja who hadn't even grasped what was happening.
"Don't panic, hold steady!"
The Mist ninja leader tried to sound composed, but his retreating steps betrayed his true mental state.
An ice mirror materialized before him, and Feng Bai's figure emerged, efficiently slicing his throat with a senbon.
"It's the White Reaper!"
Though they couldn't understand why Konoha possessed a bloodline limit that should have originated from their own village, this clearly wasn't the time to ponder such matters—especially after the Mist ninja recognized the young man before them.
"Lightning Release: Lightning Beast!"
A beast formed of crackling electricity roared as it charged several Mist ninja, its purple luminescence catching Feng Bai's attention.
Has Kakashi developed new jutsu after realizing Chidori wouldn't work? His progress really is remarkable!
Tilting his head to dodge a Mist ninja's slash, Feng Bai crouched low while coating his fist in ice crystals, delivering a punch that sent his attacker reeling. Then he drew White Fang from behind.
"I can't fall behind either—let me show you my newly developed jutsu, Thunderfire Blade!"
Channeling both lightning and fire chakra into White Fang, Feng Bai used an ice mirror to instantly position himself behind a Mist ninja, then thrust viciously toward the enemy's back.
The Mist ninja clearly sensed movement behind him and instinctively leaped away, attempting to evade Feng Bai's attack.
This caused White Fang, which was meant to pierce his back—more precisely, his waist—to strike in the wrong direction, penetrating a rather unspeakable location.
"Aaaaaahhh!!!"
The Mist ninja's agonized shriek instantly drew everyone's attention. Witnessing his miserable condition, not only did the remaining Mist ninja lose their fighting spirit, even the Konoha side couldn't bear to watch.
From a distance, Rin covered her mouth with her small hand, closing her eyes to avoid seeing more.
"Would you believe me if I said this was an accident?"
Feng Bai attempted to explain to the unfortunate victim before him, but under the devastating effects of dual lightning and fire chakra, the ninja departed the shinobi world after his final wail.
The surviving Mist ninja fled the area with everything they had, leaving Feng Bai standing alone, awkwardly scratching his head.
"Really now, though my old man did do something similar once."
Retracting his lightning jutsu, Kakashi helplessly scratched his head.
"Yikes, I'd better never anger Feng Bai."
Obito sucked in a sharp breath, protectively covering his vital area while silently making a firm resolution.
"Shimura Feng Bai, the White Reaper... Hmph, despicable methods just like his father's."
In an unobserved corner of the battlefield, a cloaked, masked figure glared malevolently at Feng Bai in the distance.
Just hearing the Shimura surname made his fists clench uncontrollably, veins bulging—clearly harboring bone-deep hatred for that name.
"Yare yare, now's not the time to focus on that guy, Setsuna-kun."
A White Zetsu poked its head up, cheerfully reminding him.
"Hmph."
With a cold snort, Setsuna withdrew his gaze and looked down at White Zetsu: "Has Wada made his move yet?"
"Of course. That's his only grandson—knowing he's still alive, how could he not emerge?" White Zetsu displayed a wicked grin, his tone delighted. "And just as Madara-sama predicted, two of those... what are they called again? Oh right, Root—two Root ninja are following him."
Uchiha Madara understood the difference between Yowan and Setsuna.
Setsuna was a relic from the era when he'd witnessed the Uchiha clan's glorious past, deeply revering Madara's will.
Yowan was different. Raised in the new era, he'd received Konoha's education. Though he wouldn't naively trust the Will of Fire like Shisui, he also wouldn't believe in the world Madara described.
He had to be made to understand pain.
Yowan's bond was naturally his most beloved grandfather.
Imagine—when a young man, having endured countless hardships to escape unfamiliar territory and return to the village that raised him, discovers his most important relative killed by Konoha ninja, how much hatred would erupt?
"This is simply Wada reaping what he sowed."
Recalling how Wada's uprising years ago had fizzled out halfway, Setsuna felt no sympathy. He turned and left the area with White Zetsu.
Even so, if they could use this opportunity to eliminate the Shimura brat as well, Madara-sama surely wouldn't object.
Muttering to himself, Setsuna suddenly recalled a certain Kirigakure plan.
...
"With things progressing like this, the war should end soon."
Around the campfire, Team 7 members huddled together for warmth while grilling skewers.
"Kirigakure is already at the end of their rope—if we push harder, we'll kick them straight into the sea."
On the other side of the fire sat Dingza's squad.
His team members were Might Guy, Genma Shiranui, and Ebisu.
"Guy, about your father..."
Knowing that Might Duy had sacrificed himself just as in the original story, Feng Bai wanted to offer comfort.
"It's alright, Feng Bai. Father ultimately fulfilled his conviction, letting his youth burn at its brightest peak. That was his will—tears would only diminish his sacrifice."
Might Guy showed his trademark smile, though how much was forced, Feng Bai couldn't tell.
"I see. Have some grilled meat."
Returning the smile, Feng Bai handed over a skewer.
