"Naruto: Ice God"Chapter 108: Kakashi, You're Disgusting Right Now
"Has anyone ever told you that you're really not suited for comforting others? You're way too verbose, Kakashi."
After being called out for his carefree nature, Feng Bai rolled his eyes. He was just about to have a proper discussion with Kakashi when the latter's next words cut him off:
"Compared to how you are now, I naturally prefer the old, carefree you. Don't put so much pressure on yourself—some things can't be solved with passion alone."
Kakashi continued his attempt at consolation, completely oblivious to how Feng Bai's expression had drastically changed.
Like? Prefer?
I treat you as a brother, and you're thinking of... that?
Is this Konoha's famous "bond"?
Feeling a chill in certain places, Feng Bai quietly shifted his position, trying to distance himself from Kakashi.
"No matter what choice you make, Obito and I will both—"
Noticing Feng Bai's movement, Kakashi looked puzzled, seemingly unable to understand why Feng Bai would suddenly pull away.
"What's wrong?"
Scratching his face, Kakashi wasn't particularly comfortable with this counseling role either. He'd only spoken up because he was worried that Obito might have led Feng Bai astray with his wild ideas.
"Ahem, Kakashi, well... you're disgusting right now..."
Feng Bai coughed lightly, trying to dispel Kakashi's nonexistent improper thoughts.
"Huh?"
Being inexplicably called disgusting by his friend left Kakashi somewhat hurt.
But seeing Feng Bai's reaction, Kakashi realized something had gone wrong. He quickly replayed his recent words in his mind and finally understood what he'd said that could be misinterpreted.
"No, no, no! That's not what I meant by 'like'!"
Hastily jumping down from the boulder, Kakashi waved his hands frantically, trying to defend his words.
"Don't come any closer! It's better if we maintain some distance!"
Seeing Kakashi jump down, Feng Bai stopped pretending and quickly leaped backward, warning Kakashi to keep his distance.
As the situation spiraled completely out of his expectations, Kakashi, concerned for his reputation, ignored Feng Bai's warning and moved forward to force him to listen to his explanation.
The two began chasing each other around their hiding spot.
"Huff... huff... hehe, Feng Bai, I told you I'm stronger than Kakashi, huff..."
Inside the cave, Obito—the unwitting instigator of this incident—lay sprawled on his makeshift bedding, his belly exposed from his ungainly sleeping position. Drool pooled around him while he wore a foolish grin, completely oblivious to the commotion outside.
Rin, awakened by the noise, sat up and listened carefully to Feng Bai and Kakashi's discussion. She couldn't help but giggle softly before lying back down with a mischievous smile, no longer concerned with the situation outside.
The next morning.
The first thing Obito did upon waking was yawn and go find Feng Bai, who was supposed to be on watch at the entrance. Instead, he found both Feng Bai and Kakashi sporting heavy dark circles under their eyes, sitting in mutual silence.
After a series of chases, Kakashi had finally caught up to Feng Bai and forced him to endure a full half-hour of explanations. Only then did Feng Bai, still somewhat suspicious, reluctantly accept Kakashi's clarification.
However, after all that commotion, Kakashi couldn't sleep either. He could only sit not far behind Feng Bai with a resentful expression, lamenting how he'd come to know such a wildly imaginative person.
Seeing Kakashi refuse to sleep, Feng Bai—who had just begun to relax—tensed up again. Afraid that Kakashi might try something, he had to monitor both the external situation and Kakashi behind him, turning what should have been a relaxed watch duty into an exhausting ordeal of constant vigilance.
"Huh? What's the situation? Kakashi, why are you here too?"
Noticing Kakashi's tired appearance, Obito was puzzled.
"Idiot, it's all because of you!"
Kakashi punched Obito on the head and stalked back to pack his gear with a dark expression.
Stunned by the inexplicable blow, Obito looked confused by Kakashi's sudden aggression.
Turning his pleading gaze to Feng Bai, and seeing that Obito still hadn't figured out what had happened, Feng Bai felt his anger flare. He also extended his fist to strike Obito's head, wearing an expression identical to Kakashi's as he returned to the cave to pack.
This left Obito standing alone at the cave entrance, dazed from two early-morning punches, contemplating what he'd done wrong.
Kakashi's counsel did have some effect. As they set out again, Feng Bai no longer obsessed over whether he should work to change the shinobi world, instead focusing entirely on their current mission.
The group quietly infiltrated the Iwa ninja's sphere of influence in the Land of Rain, where they could hear the distant sounds of battle—not particularly intense, but clearly combat.
"Are they our people?"
Feng Bai's first thought was that Konoha had launched an attack.
"Probably not. The battle intensity is low—more like skirmishing between small squads."
Pressing his ear to the ground and listening for a while, Kakashi made his assessment: "I can only hear the clash of metal weapons, no sounds of jutsu activation. Both sides are likely still in the probing phase."
After hearing Kakashi's report, Feng Bai considered for a moment and decided to lead the group closer to investigate.
For safety, he concealed a Flying Thunder God kunai nearby, prepared to evacuate everyone to this location if the situation turned dangerous.
Soon, they reached a position where they could observe the entire battle.
"Rain ninja?"
Seeing the combatants, Kakashi was somewhat surprised.
The opposing forces were evenly matched four-person squads of Iwa and Rain ninja. Compared to the well-equipped Iwa ninja, these Rain ninja's gear could only be described as crude.
Yet even so, in the ensuing battle, these Rain ninja unleashed fighting spirit equal to their opponents, forcibly breaking through the tightly coordinated defensive formation created by the Iwa ninja.
"Didn't Hanzō arrange for his subordinates not to interfere with the Iwa ninja? Why are they fighting?"
Rin Nohara was puzzled by why the Rain ninja would battle the Iwa ninja.
"That's simple—we'll just ask them."
Feng Bai drew out senbon, preparing to find the right moment to join the fight.
"Damn bastards!"
An Iwa ninja took a kunai to his right chest, the sharp pain making him curse as he swung his earth-encased arm, intending to crush the Rain ninja who had ambushed him.
Abandoning his kunai, the Rain ninja retreated directly backward, only to collide with an earth wall that appeared from nowhere.
"Earth Release: Earth Flow Wall."
Another Iwa ninja smiled confidently, having blocked the escape route.
"Die!"
Before his fist could reach the Rain ninja, intense pain in his waist forced him to halt his attack.
