Part 89
For a moment, Alex just watches him.
The way his breathing slows, the way his shoulders loosen as if the weight of the world finally slides off. The cup still rests near his fingers, His head tilted slightly, coming to rest on her shoulder as if it belonged there—as if it had always known the way. The moment his weight settled, her breath caught, a quiet thrill shivering through her chest.
So close. Too close for anyone else.
She stiffened for half a second, then relaxed deliberately, carefully, afraid that even the smallest movement might wake him and steal this moment away. His breathing evened out, soft and trusting, each rise and fall a promise whispered directly into her bones. He slept so peacefully, unaware of the storm he had awakened in her.
How sweet he looked like this. How vulnerable. How completely hers.
She tilted her head just enough to feel his hair brush against her cheek, committing the sensation to memory.
The sound of the wind moves through the trees — soft, almost protective.
She tells herself this isn't wrong.
She tells herself he needed this.
He had to rest.
"You don't understand, Adrian," she whispers. "The world keeps taking and taking from you. I'm the only one who can give you peace."
She moves closer, brushing the edge of his sleeve with careful fingers. Even now, she's gentle — almost reverent. There's no joy in her face, only an aching sort of calm.
For that time, he looks peaceful. Not the pressured, camera-ready smile she's seen a thousand times, but a quiet one, almost human. It makes her heart ache.
"This is what you needed all along," she murmurs, her voice trembling. "Just me. No noise. No lights. No one else."
The clock inside the café ticks faintly through the open door, marking every second that passes. Alex straightens, her reflection caught faintly in the window beside him — two shadows, side by side, blurred into one shape by the night.
She exhales slowly, steadying herself. The calmness she feels now is deceptive, fragile. Beneath it, a storm builds — a desperate, jealous love twisted into something unrecognizable.
"Don't worry," she whispers to the sleeping idol. "When you wake up, you'll understand."
And with that, she reaches for her car keys.
