Chapter 20 - Chapter 19 : Eurasian Bridge

The morning in Moscow unfolds with an atmosphere that strikingly resembles a grand and enchanting national theatre stage, where every detail seems meticulously arranged to create a sense of profound drama and significance. The impressive structure of the Russian Federation Ministry of Sport building stands elegantly in the foreground, distinguished by its magnificent marble columns that radiate an air of power and grandeur, dominating the landscape. Perched high above it, the vibrant tricolour flag flutters proudly, dancing gracefully in the brisk, cold morning breeze, which bites at the skin with temperatures plummeting to a chilling minus 8°C, thereby adding an undeniably dramatic touch to the frosty morning atmosphere. Amidst this picturesque setting, Arief Rahman has just landed in the bustling city on a sleek private jet belonging to the esteemed Krasnodar football club. He is not alone, as he is accompanied by Dmitri Ivanov, a respected figure in the world of sports, along with two dedicated staff members from Unity Academy. All of them are dressed in formal black suits layered over thick sweaters as a means to ward off the nipping morning chill—not typical tracksuit sportswear that one might expect from athletes, but instead a carefully chosen attire that the Russian media has dubbed the "Eurasian Bridge" uniform, symbolizing collaboration and unity.

As they step into the lobby of a grand building surrounded by gleaming marble walls that reflect the softly glowing light, RTV and RIA Novosti reporters, armed with their cameras, are poised and ready to capture this pivotal moment entitled the "Indonesian Coach Signs Russia-Indonesia Football MoU," a highlight of significant importance in the sporting world. Director General Ivan Petrov is eagerly waiting to extend a warm welcome to Arief in a luxurious executive room adorned with lavish gold-plated accents. With palpable excitement, he greets Arief: "Welcome, Mr. Rahman! Just yesterday, the derby match against Spartak sent shockwaves through the media—a captivating narrative of 'Indo Flair Conquers Moscow' has become the talk of the town. Today, however, marks an extraordinary historical moment as we officially launch the Unity Academy Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This vital agreement serves as a bridge between Russia and PSSI, one that will pave the way for promising Asian talent to make their mark in Europe."

With a broad grin illuminating his face, Arief extends his hand for a robust handshake: "Thank you, Mr. Ivan. Our victory in the Derby stands as a testament to our team's dedication and collaborative effort—Adi's strategic play effectively closed down the midfield, paving the way for Dika's decisive solo goal, which proved to be the turning point of the match. So, can we anticipate that Unity will facilitate the participation of 50 Indonesian talents in the annual trials at the RPL academy?"

Ivan nods in agreement, his expression serious yet filled with optimism, as he gestures toward the large projector screen that gradually lights up to display the intricacies of their collaborative programme: "Absolutely! The first phase will encompass a six-month internship placement for 20 Indonesian coaches to be immersed in the vibrant football cultures of both Krasnodar and Moscow. Following that, the second phase will involve 50 young players in the U-16/U-18 categories participating in a trial camp located along the scenic Black Sea coast, supported by an annual budget amounting to €5 million, bolstered by generous sponsorship from renowned entities like Gazprom. You, Mr. Arief, will take on the esteemed role of Director of Asia, responsible for crafting a comprehensive curriculum that melds pressing strategies tailored to both snowy and tropical playing conditions."

Dmitri interjects, adding important insights to the conversation: "PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir has delivered confirmation via WhatsApp, and he will soon dispatch the first group of ten coaches from Liga 1 to partake in this transformative opportunity. The successful playing models exemplified by players like Dika and Reza serve as inspiring benchmarks for what is to come."

During a video call from Jakarta, an animated Erick Thohir articulates his thoughts with palpable enthusiasm: "Arief! This MoU shapes up to be a monumental game-changer. Although we faced setbacks in the AFF Cup, which stirred considerable media scrutiny, the establishment of this Unity Bridge designed to strengthen the pathway for Indonesian talent to access opportunities in Europe is nothing short of extraordinary. Rest assured, PSSI extends its full support for this endeavour."

Arief responds with zeal: "Thank you, Mr. Erick. Today's signing of the MoU lays the groundwork for Indonesian talent aspiring to join our national team through engagements in Russia, all in complete alignment with our established format. This presents a win-win solution for both sides involved."

During a press conference that draws the attention of around 100 journalists from both Russia and Indonesia, Ivan steps up to the podium with an air of triumph: "Unity Academy has officially been born! Arief Rahman will take the lead as the Director of Asia programme!"

Following this announcement, Arief elaborates on his reflections: "Russia has undeniably become my second home. The concept of Unity transcends simple partnerships; it embodies a true Eurasian bridge that connects Russia and Indonesia. Imagine the possibilities of Indonesian players making their debut in the RPL, subsequently applying refined European tactics back in our Liga 1 competition!"

The journalists, driven by curiosity, press on with their inquiries: "Does your focus still revolve around the 2027 national team?" To which Arief responds resolutely: "I will dedicate my full attention to Krasnodar. Unity will operate as a parallel component to our aspirations."

Indonesian media outlets fortify their coverage with live broadcasts via Kompas, proclaiming: "Arief has successfully signed the groundbreaking Russia-PSSI MoU! The gates are now wide open for Indonesian talent to head to Europe!"

As the grand signing ceremony unfolds, the substantial 50-page MoU is officially signed, with witnesses logging in virtually to attend from both the Russian Ministry and PSSI. The relentless clicking of journalists' cameras captures every moment as Ivan embraces Arief warmly, exclaiming: "Congratulations, Director Rahman!"

Upon his return to Krasnodar that very afternoon, an exuberant launch party ensued in the villa area, where shashlik was served with generous support from sponsor Gazprom, and special Jakarta satay was brought in by Sari, adding a cultural flair to the festivities. With family gathered around a round table, Natalia beamed enthusiastically: "Becoming the Russian national director? This is indeed extraordinary! Liam even exclaimed, 'Daddy is the Russian boss!'"

Meanwhile, Sarah, an influential figure with 4 million vlog subscribers, announced: "Arief has successfully signed a €5 million MoU! Our Indonesian children are heading to partake in the RPL!"

In the midst of the celebrations, Sari shared gleefully: "Relatives in Jakarta sent a WhatsApp message that declared: 'Uncle Arief has paved the way to Europe!'"

Liam, caught up in the excitement, leaned over to draw a vibrant picture representing the MoU, with the simple yet profound message: "Indonesia and Russia are friends!"

As the festivities continued, Arief raised his glass in a toast: "We have built an incredible bridge. With our recent victory in the Spartak derby and the launch of Unity, our journey continues as we prepare to face Zenit in Moscow, followed by CSKA."

In a moment of reflective whisper, Natalia subtly mentioned, "The pressure of being both Director and assistant at RPL is mounting. Is that manageable?"

With an air of assurance, Arief replied: "It's allright. This endeavor is a strong foundation upon which we can build, and it is a struggle I'm more than willing to take on."

The following day, the excitement culminates in a highly anticipated friendly match against Zenit, to be held in a grand stadium capable of accommodating 40,000 spectators. Karpin, the coach, offers decisive instructions: "You are now the hero of Unity! However, stay mindful that Zenit boasts a formidable budget of €120 million."

Arief, drawing from his wealth of strategic knowledge, drafted a game plan and presented it confidently to Karpin: "Let's consider employing a 3-5-2 formation given the heavy snowfall: wingback Dika can push aggressively, while we position our false 9, Spertsyan, to drop back for support. Additionally, we should set up a press trap in midfield, catching them off-guard."

As the match kicks off, fiercely contested from the start, Zenit manages to score in the 5th minute, setting the stage for an intense battle. Undeterred, Arief quickly conferred with Karpin, emphasizing the importance of maintaining composure under pressure to the team captain as well: "Stay calm, even when the stakes are high!"

In a remarkable turnaround during the 18th minute, a swift counterattack orchestrated by Dika culminated in a brilliant assist to Córdoba, leveling the score at 1-1 and sparking hope among the players and fans alike!

As the second half unfolds, in the 62nd minute, a well-executed set piece from a corner allows Sergei to score again, bringing the score to 2-1! The climax of the match arrives in the thrilling 89th minute when Zenit wins a penalty kick—but Agkatsev's stellar performance leads to a dramatic save, allowing for a counterattack that sees a sublime pass from Adi to Olusegun, who manages to score again, sealing the victory at 3-1!

Another monumental win! Media outlets buzz with excitement, reporting: "Under Arief's guidance on staff, Krasnodar remains undefeated in an impressive series of friendly matches, with Spartak and Zenit falling before them!"

Later, in the team's dressing room, Karpin offered words of praise: "Incredible work! We have the potential to compete fiercely for a top-four finish in the RPL. You, as Director of Unity, fit this role with utmost proficiency."

As Arief gazed out at the blanket of snow during that tranquil winter night, he expressed his contemplations: "While the RPL league hasn't officially commenced yet, the responsibilities are already intensifying."

The journal entry concludes poignantly, reflecting: "The Unity Bridge stands strong, marking milestones achieved through a remarkable string of victories."
