Chapter 143: Special Training
Garp glared at Luffy and refused to give him anything.
Makino could only sigh and go cook again. Roy still was not full, so she ended up making enough for another dozen people.
"Big brother, can you tell me about your adventures overseas?" Luffy looked up at Roy. "The other guests always talk about it."
He could not win against his annoying grandpa, so listening to a story was not too much to ask, right?
The moment Luffy said it, Sanji snapped his head over as well.
He was curious too. He wanted to hear his master's adventure stories.
"Sure." Roy nodded with a smile.
He began telling a simplified version of his travels around the world.
Time flew.
Luffy was already on his third serving of food Makino had cooked.
Roy ate and drank without slowing down, finishing what felt like his twentieth plate while calmly narrating one adventure after another.
Garp had never heard Tsuru's version of Roy's story, so he did not notice anything strange.
Besides, Roy deliberately cut out many people and objects from decades ago that could have revealed too much.
So the stories were shorter than the real thing, but to Luffy and Sanji they were still unbelievably exciting.
"All right. One hour's up, Luffy. Training time." Garp suddenly spoke. "You're something else, kid. Eating that much in such a short time, you've got potential."
"Haha, it's nothing. I'm still not full." Roy laughed, finishing his meal.
Makino shook her head helplessly. They had not prepared much today, and Roy had eaten most of it.
"Ugh, I hate this…" Luffy jumped off the tall stool, already dreading his grandpa's brutal training.
Roy stood up, smiling, and reached out to ruffle Sanji's hair.
"Vice Admiral Garp, I've heard your great name in the Navy for a long time. I have a favor to ask. Would you be willing to hear me out?"
Following Roy's hand, Garp looked at the blond kid with the round eyebrows standing nearby, as if he had already guessed what was coming.
Garp was not stupid at all. Most of the time he just liked acting confused.
In truth, he was one of the few smart ones in the Monkey family, he simply preferred playing dumb.
"Go on." Garp smiled.
Looks like I've got another target for entertainment… cough, no, another training target.
That was what Garp was thinking.
"We're both pretty busy, so we're hoping you can train Sanji for a few days," Roy said. "Let him train with Luffy."
What do you think?
Roy chuckled and was about to add more, but Garp cut him off.
"Hahahaha, no need. Don't waste breath, I'm not interested in listening to all that." Garp waved a hand. "You're leaving him with me for now, right?"
"That's right." Roy nodded with a smile.
"Haha! If you hand him to me, I'll train him into an excellent young Marine officer!" Garp patted his own chest, full of confidence.
"…" Roy went silent. He had not said a single word about making Sanji a Marine.
"…" Sanji stared at the old man, fear crawling up his spine. A terrible premonition settled in his stomach.
Hancock let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Handing Sanji to the Marines was not the worst thing. At least it meant she would have more time alone with Roy.
"Ahem. I'm glad you're willing," Roy said. "But I need to remind you, he fights with kicks. As a chef, he can't be trained to use his hands to attack."
If Sanji's hands were forced into combat, it would trample his dream, and Roy was not letting that happen.
"Hm." Garp's expression turned serious. "I understand. A chef's hands must not be stained with dirty blood, right?"
"That's right. I'm glad you get it." Roy smiled.
See? Garp was a hidden genius with surprisingly high emotional intelligence.
"Then let's go!" Garp laughed, energized. Training two kids at once would be even more fun.
"Oh yeah." Garp turned and looked at Roy. "You coming too?"
"Really?" Roy blinked, surprised.
If he could watch Garp fight and use those techniques up close, it would be perfect.
He could even try to secretly learn something.
"What's the big deal?" Garp said with a helpless grin. "Come on. Training two kids is boring. You can help me. You're Luffy's good friend, after all."
He sounded resigned, but he was not actually complaining.
His grandson's way of making friends was just… unique.
Tell a few fun stories and Luffy instantly decided you were family.
"Then I'll be relying on you, Vice Admiral!" Roy said excitedly.
Hancock sighed and covered her face.
This guy…
"Hahaha! Let's go then, to Mount Colubo!" Garp grabbed Luffy in one hand and Sanji in the other and marched straight out of the bar.
Roy held Hancock's hand and hurried after them.
Garp's training for Luffy was famously brutal, even though Luffy was still small.
Dressed in a black suit, Garp carried one little devil by the back of the neck and headed into the forest.
Roy and Hancock followed close behind.
Now that Roy was here, Garp felt like testing his strength later, then raising the difficulty a little.
He was not going to waste such a rare chance. He had finally run into a young man with real potential.
Maybe his Iron Fist of Love would land again and again, making the other guy stronger with every hit, until the two of them understood the true meaning of love through punches.
And then Roy would join the Navy.
Roy, meanwhile, was in an excellent mood.
Garp's teaching methods were awful, but he had to admit they worked, at least on certain people.
Garp's training was top tier, but the rebellion rate was equally top tier.
Dragon became part of the Revolutionary Army, and Luffy would become a pirate, then chase the title of Pirate King.
The training results were practically proportional to the chance of rebellion.
…
"My training is very strict, you two brats," Garp said seriously under the trees. "You'd better be prepared to lose your lives!"
Luffy pouted. He was being forced into this. Old man, what was the point of saying it out loud?
"Yes!" Sanji nodded with excitement, completely unaware of what kind of nightmare he had just signed up for. "I won't let Master down!"
Hiss, hiss, hiss…
A massive venomous snake slid down from the branches above, tongue flicking, cold eyes locked on Garp.
Thump!
Garp did not even look.
He turned and released a burst of Armament Haki behind him, a shockwave that detonated outward and killed the giant snake instantly.
After casually showing off something terrifying, Garp smiled and looked back at them.
Luffy's eyes went wide, mouth hanging open.
Sanji mirrored him, just as stunned.
"Grandpa's so stingy!" Luffy shouted, furious. "Why didn't you ever show me that before?!" He pointed and fumed. "Damn it, he's always bullying me! He kept such a strong move secret from me!"
"Shut up, you idiot!" Garp barked. "That's not something you can learn right now. I'm showing it to him!"
Roy stared at Garp, shocked.
That was… Armament Haki manifesting outward.
"I don't care, I want to learn!" Luffy hopped around like an angry little monkey. "I want my fists to fly like bullets!"
