Chapter 139: I Patted The Head Of The Future Pirate King
"Ptooey, ptooey, ptooey! I hate that stinky Grandpa the most! You are not catching me!"
Luffy lifted his chin, baring a row of big white teeth as he squinted and laughed. Then he spun on his heel and bolted toward the dock.
"That idiot…" Garp shook his head with a helpless smile, half amused and half exasperated.
A warship was docked at the pier, packed with his men. Garp did not even need to chase. One wave of his hand and a bunch of Marines could scoop up his foolish grandson and deliver him on a silver platter.
Dragon was too gloomy, and he carried too many things in his heart.
They finally got a grandson who brought them joy, and the kid was stupid to a heroic degree.
Foosha Village belonged to the Goa Kingdom, but thanks to Garp, those rotten nobles never dared to lay a hand on it. If anyone reached out, Garp would swing that enormous fist and pay them a personal visit.
So the village stayed peaceful.
Luffy jogged through the streets laughing, occasionally tossing greetings at familiar villagers.
Still, Luffy liked the sea most of all.
When he was little, Grandpa had dumped him here and the villagers had raised him, fed him, and watched him like a flock of overly patient babysitters.
At this point, Garp had not handed Luffy over to the Dadan family yet.
Luffy had not met Ace or Sabo either.
As for Shanks, he was still roaming around other parts of the East Blue. With Garp staying home, Shanks did not dare come near Foosha Village.
So…
Little Luffy was still pretty lonely.
Under an azure sky, with the endless sea stretching out in rippling blue, sitting at the pier and staring at the horizon was Luffy's happiest moment.
Garp strolled out of the village at an unhurried pace.
Luffy sat on the dock swinging his legs. Before Garp could even lift his hand to signal the Marines to haul the brat back…
"Grandpa, there is a boat! Look, there is a boat!"
"You idiot grandson, what is so special about that?"
Garp shook his head and decided to let him play a little longer.
"Damn it, it is gone again!" Luffy clenched his teeth, glaring at the sea with wide eyes.
He liked ships from overseas the most, except Grandpa's warships, of course.
The guys on those warships were so boring.
Luffy loved listening to travelers talk about places beyond the horizon.
Coincidentally, most merchants, and most pirates too, loved boasting when they were bored. They enjoyed watching a kid stare at them with admiration while they talked themselves up.
To be honest, people who brag really enjoyed it.
So Luffy had heard a lot of "amazing" stories.
Most of them were nonsense.
But the naive little Luffy believed every word.
Those stories were so fun. It was like he had companions inside them, sharing an exciting voyage with him.
"Oh! Another ship! They are coming!" Luffy jumped to his feet, practically vibrating.
Far out on the sea, a large ship was slowly approaching.
Luffy's eyes lit up.
"Snakes! They are using snakes to pull the ship! This is so cool! Grandpa, Grandpa, look, look!"
"Shut up!"
Garp walked over and bonked Luffy on the head with a loud bang.
Little Luffy was way too noisy.
"All you do is bully your grandson. What else can you do?" Luffy covered his forehead with one hand, grimacing, while picking his nose with the other.
Garp did not even glance at him. He stared out to sea and also shoved a finger into his nostril.
Grandfather and grandson, perfectly synchronized, even while picking their noses.
"A snake from the Calm Belt… looks like it is up to no good."
Garp squinted. He lifted a hand, and the Marines on the warship immediately snapped to attention.
A lieutenant appeared beside him in an instant, holding a stack of bounty posters.
Knowing the Six Styles was convenient. With Shave, you could move so fast it looked like teleportation.
The ship drew closer, dragged by a giant blue serpent. On the deck sat a massive rock that bobbed up and down with the motion of the sea.
A woman with a stunning figure stood aboard holding a wooden stick, yawning as she supervised a blond child's training.
She swung the stick lazily while the boy kept kicking, over and over.
There was also a pet snake sprawled in the shade of an orange tree on deck, sleeping like it owned the ship.
"How is it?" Garp asked.
"Reporting, Vice Admiral. We found no bounty information on them." The adjutant shook his head.
There was no pirate flag flying.
Roy had lived in the Calm Belt for years and had not been put on a bounty list by the Navy yet.
He had set fire to Mary Geoise, but he had covered his tracks extremely well.
As for Hancock, even if she escaped Mary Geoise as a slave, what could a little girl do?
Nobody would believe she killed Celestial Dragons back then.
There had been too many slaves escaping during that chaos. The Navy could not place bounties on every single one.
In truth, the hunting and recapturing of slaves was handled by the Celestial Dragons' lackeys.
Hancock had not taken the throne of the Amazon Lily kingdom and had not joined the Kuja Pirates, so there was no bounty on her head either.
"That is good." Garp nodded and stopped caring.
The moment he saw that enormous blue serpent, he knew the ship was not ordinary.
But if they were not pirates, he would not bother.
"Luffy, I will give you one more hour. After that, you train," Garp said.
"Okay…"
Luffy stared at the incoming ship with shining eyes, completely ignoring his grandfather's words.
In one ear and out the other, that was Luffy.
The ship finally reached shore and docked.
Luffy stared at a fiery red haired man stepping off with a woman, followed by a blond boy with round eyebrows.
In Luffy's eyes, there were only interesting people. He was face blind, he could not even tell whether a woman was pretty or not.
It was not an act. That was just how he was.
"This feels familiar…" Garp muttered, still picking his nose while studying Roy.
Somewhere, in some office, he felt like he had seen that red hair before, but he could not place it.
"What are you doing here?" Roy asked, smiling as he teased.
Garp brat?
Logically, that was correct.
Based on Roy's birth era, Roy was practically a kid. Compared to that, Garp was definitely a brat. Even Kong, would still count as a kid.
"Who are you?" Garp asked, still feeling the man looked vaguely familiar.
"Grandpa, you talk too much nonsense!" Luffy pouted and glared at Garp, then turned to Roy with a bright grin and ran over.
"Are you here to rest and resupply?"
"Yes." Roy nodded with a smile.
"Do you want food and drinks?" Luffy asked, cheerful and eager.
When something caught his interest, Luffy became surprisingly sharp.
"You will lead the way?" Roy asked, amused, and reached out to pat Luffy's head.
"Come with me!" Luffy said, already tugging Roy toward the village, planning to take him straight to Makino's bar so they could hear stories.
Thump.
Garp punched Luffy on the forehead.
That brat.
Garp had just been about to remember something, and his idiot grandson ruined the thread right as it formed.
