Chapter 56 - Chapter 56:Reunion

The grand solar of the Bright Castle was no longer the den of decadent rot it had been under Gunlaug's reign. Now, it breathed with the rhythmic, clinical pulse of a command center. Alista Tudor sat at the head of the obsidian table, his eyes tracing the intricate ley lines of a map spread before him.

It had been several months since the "Blood Emperor" had forcibly seized the mantle of the Bright Lord. In that time, the very foundations of the Dark City had been dismantled and forged anew. Alista hadn't spent his days lounging on a throne of ivory; he had been in the trenches, leading the charge against the horrors of the Shore. His most recent triumph remained the talk of the halls: the organized culling of the Lord of the Dead. From the cold essence of that nightmare, Alista had claimed the Starlight Shard, which he had promptly gifted to Gwen to bolster her healing capabilities.

A sharp, rhythmic knock vibrated through the heavy oak door.

"Come in," Alista commanded without looking up.

The door creaked open to admit Seishan. She moved with her usual predatory grace, though her attire had changed; she wore a functional grey tunic suited for the training grounds, and the Starlight Shard she carried for Gwen caught the dim torchlight.

"How is the training progressing?" Alista asked, finally leaning back.

Seishan let out a short, melodic laugh that lacked its former mockery. "The progress is... surprising. The Outer Settlement refugees have officially formed their few independent hunting parties. They aren't just surviving anymore, Alista; they're competing."

She slid a thick roll of parchment across the table. It was a comprehensive manifest—a ledger of blood and steel. Alista had implemented a rigorous tiered system before allowing anyone outside the walls. Class One involved mandatory combat drills under Seishan's iron watch. Once they could hold a blade without trembling, they were moved to Class Two: live hunts led by Klaus and the veteran Pathfinders. Only after proving their mettle were they granted the "Freedom of the Wilds," provided they reported every kill, every Soul Shard, and every Memory back to Fors and Alista.

"Fors is managing the Memory store with Steve," Seishan continued. "They've moved to a strict 'First Come, First Served' requisition policy. It's kept the infighting down, but the administrative load is staggering."

Alista tapped his fingers on the table. He now held five of the Shards-but the pieces were still missing. He needed Nephis's cohort to return safely to complete the set, yet the Castle was suffering from a critical shortage of high-level staff. Klaus was bordering on exhaustion from constant scouting, and Alista himself was frequently forced to join the hunts when the prey was too Great for the trainees to handle.

As he began to discuss the bottleneck in resource allocation with Seishan, the door burst open. Caera, one of Kido's team, stood there breathless.

"Lord," she gasped, "The Changing Star has returned. Her cohort is at the gates."

Alista's lips curled into a slow, cold smile. "Finally. Bring them to me."

Nephis walked through the gates of the Bright Castle, but the homecoming felt like stepping into a foreign land. She and her cohort were jagged fragments of their former selves—bruised, bleeding, and caked in the dust of the Hollow Mountains.

As they entered the areas where the Outer Settlement usually swarmed in desperate, hungry masses, they found a ghost town. The hovels were mostly empty. The few people they did see weren't begging or dying; they were armed, carrying heavy sacks of monster meat and glowing Soul Shards.

Nephis stopped, her grey eyes scanning the shifted landscape. Usually, the people would flock to her, seeking the radiance of the "Saintess." Instead, as a group of hunters passed by, one of them looked at her, sneered with visible loathing, and spat on the ground before walking away in a silent rage.

"What is happening?" Cassie whispered, her hand tightening on Sunny's arm. Her sightless eyes couldn't see the disdain, but she could feel the jagged edges of the atmosphere.

The cohort stood in stunned silence, observing the inexplicable changes. Suddenly, a figure detached herself from a nearby patrol. It was Sid. She marched toward them, her face a mask of seething resentment.

"Nephis," Sid said, her voice tight. "The Bright Lord invites you to the solar."

Nephis didn't move. "Tell me, Sid. Why is the settlement empty? Why is everyone looking at us with such... vitriol?"

Sid's composure snapped. "Shut up, you bitch!" she snarled, causing the entire cohort to flinch. "The King ordered you to come. You don't get to ask questions here."

Nephis was stunned into silence. Cassie stepped forward, her voice trembling. "Sid? What are you saying? We're friends, what happened?"

Sid turned her glare toward the blind girl. "Oh, you don't get to talk to me like that anymore. Not after going along with her. Not after the 'Road of Bones'." She then looked at Sunny, her expression a confusing mix of pity and frustration. "And you... I thought you knew better than anyone what it's like to be used. Yet you stood by her side. Why?"

Sunny opened his mouth to respond, his mind calculating a thousand variables, but Sid cut him off with a dismissive wave. "Whatever. Follow me and get it over with."

As they climbed the stairs to the inner sanctum, the transition was even more jarring. Every Sleeper they passed looked at Nephis with a mixture of disdain and cold fury. The adoration was gone, replaced by a wall of collective hatred.

"Sid," Kai asked softly, trying to bridge the gap. "May I know why Gunlaug wants to see us? Is it about the Castle Guards that Effie mentioned earlier?"

Sid let out a bitter, sharp laugh. "No need to worry about Gunlaug. He's is imprisoned in a dungeon. Alista Tudor is the Emperor now. That matter is resolved."

The entire cohort stopped dead.

Nephis's mouth twitched. Cassie and Sunny looked as if they had been struck by lightning. Kai and Effie were frozen in sheer disbelief.

"The Blood Emperor is the Bright Lord?" Effie blurted out, her carefree mask shattered. "Who could have thought that nutjob would actually pull it off?"

Sid whirled around, glaring at the giantess. "At least he didn't manipulate us. He didn't lie. He showed us the truth."

The confusion among the group was total, but Sid refused to say more. She led them to the heavy double doors of the solar and gestured for them to enter before turning on her heel and leaving, her eyes still burning with silent accusations.

Nephis took a deep breath, composed her porcelain mask, and pushed the doors open.

Inside, Alista was hunched over the table, marking details on a complex topographical map. He didn't look up immediately. "Come in," he said simply.

The cohort filed in, their disdain for him evident in their posture. Nephis stepped to the front, her voice a frozen blade. "What exactly happened here, Alista? What have you done?"

Alista finally straightened, meeting her gaze with a bored indifference. "Well, Gunlaug and I had a bit of a disagreement. I won, I changed the management, and—as you might have noticed—your fan club has officially disbanded."

"What a cunning snake you are," Sunny hissed, stepping forward. "Waiting for the Changing Star to be absent before challenging the throne. How convenient."

Alista let out a dry, mocking snort. "Still whining like a bitch, aren't you, Sunny? I didn't wait for her to leave; I waited for the right moment to stop a slaughter she was more than happy to invite."

He reached into his satchel and pulled out the dark, jagged Visual Rock. He placed it on the table, the obsidian surface humming with stored essence.

"Before we continue this conversation, I'm going to play a video for you," Alista said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous tone. "The rest of the Shore has already seen it. In fact, they've seen it several times. You guys are the very last people in this hellhole to see this."

He tapped the stone. The light in the room dimmed, and the projection of a rain-slicked alleyway in the dying sunset began to play.
