Chapter 149 - Chapter 149: City Falls, Survival in Desperate Circumstances

The enormous roar of propellers was deafening, constantly circling in the sky over Raccoon City.

Anyone who looked up could see Umbrella-branded Police helicopters flying overhead in wave after wave.

Umbrella sent its Soldiers to various key points in Raccoon City, occupying traffic arteries and high ground, seemingly to protect the city, but in reality, to control the order of the testing ground.

Most of them were not there to protect the Civilians, but to allow Umbrella to control all aspects of this testing ground until the very end.

However, there were some exceptions among these troops.

Umbrella's most elite mercenary organization, U.B.C.S., was also fully prepared; they were a special emergency response unit established to deal with biochemical experimental weapons.

And now, they would be in this city, alongside the Police, to rescue the innocent Civilians.

A difficult battle was about to begin.

"Help, help! What are you?! Don't come any closer!" a Civilian screamed, running frantically, chased by a group of "people" who could no longer be called human.

Their dilated pupils made the whites of their eyes terrifyingly small, and their putrid smell could be detected from a long distance away.

Looking closer, one could see their already rotting muscles and grayish-white necrotic skin tissue.

Some even had maggots growing on them, the maggots wriggling in the horrific and grotesque wounds, a sight enough to make many people nauseous and lose their appetite.

But now, what they wanted to do was far more than make people lose their appetite; they wanted to devour people as food, swallowing them into their eternally insatiable stomachs.

These frenzied zombies had surrounded the Civilian.

With severely decayed organs, they emitted whimpering sounds, like the howls of hungry ghosts.

And with a pure craving for food, they had already extended their sharp claws and teeth towards this unlucky fellow.

"No! No! Don't come any closer! Someone save me! Ah…" After a horrific scream, a human fell to the ground.

And not long after, a corpse covered in Beast-like bite wounds slowly stood up, dragging its sluggish body to join its brethren, beginning to search for all living things to fill its perpetually empty stomach.

In Raccoon City today, he was not the first unlucky fellow, nor would he be the last.

Large numbers of Civilians ran in terror, having abandoned their private cars; the congested traffic had become a deadly obstacle at this time.

For survival, their legs became their last mode of transportation.

But they were still surrounded by large numbers of these terrifying creatures.

The outbreak of the biochemical crisis quickly turned the area into a Hell, and the vast hordes of zombies made one's heart tremble just by looking at them.

Some Civilians with weapons began to shoot frantically, but they could not stop the advance of this sea of corpses.

In the end, they could only let out tragic and desperate screams, because in their eyes, survival had become an impossibility.

Just then, several Police patrol cars and SUVs carrying riot Police stopped at a nearby intersection.

Wearing bulletproof vests, bulletproof helmets, and armed with G3P5 semi-automatic rifles, practically armed to the teeth, the riot Police quickly jumped out of their Police cars.

Using the Police cars as cover, they launched a fierce attack on the massive hordes of zombies opposite them.

"Those who want to live, come here quickly!" a Police officer shouted through a megaphone to the fleeing Civilians.

Looking at the dense, dark mass of zombies, numbering at least a thousand, he couldn't help but wipe the cold sweat from his forehead.

The immense pressure made his legs tremble, but seeing the Civilians dragging their children, he gritted his teeth and persevered.

At the same time, he shouted to his subordinates: "Fire! Fire at will!!!"

The narrow street was already packed with countless swarming zombies; their figures were everywhere.

The terrifying whimpering sounds constantly echoing in their ears, and the annoying cries and shouts around them, were enough to make any Police officer feel a suffocating powerlessness.

And the overwhelming and shocking scene of the endless zombies was also enough to shatter the fragile confidence of these Police.

A gunshot rang out, and a huge spray of blood burst from the chest of a zombie at the very front.

Immediately after, gunshots continuously erupted, golden bullet casings constantly fell to the ground, and bullets poured into the sea of corpses as if they were free, attempting to block the zombies' advance.

But with the exception of a few individual zombies, most of them still surged forward like a tide.

This terrifying scene horrified all the Police, because if an ordinary person were hit by several bullets, they would have long since returned to the Heavens.

But as long as these terrifying monsters were not shot in the head, even if they were torn to shreds, they would still crawl towards the Police little by little.

Although these mutilated corpses moved slowly, they brought an unspeakable Alien Species of fear to everyone.

Not everyone could withstand this terrible pressure; some riot Police at the very front were already on the verge of collapse.

Someone shouted tremblingly, "What kind of monster is this? It can't be killed!"

But no one had time to respond to him; every Police officer's forehead was covered in sweat.

They continuously aimed, pulled the trigger, and reloaded, but the frantic consumption of ammunition could not effectively stop the zombies' advance.

In desperation, a Police officer took out a high-explosive grenade and threw it into the sea of corpses.

The fragmentation grenade exploded among the dense zombies, but aside from a few zombies whose heads were blown off, the others continued to advance towards them.

However, the sound of the explosion always had some effect; it helped these somewhat collapsing Police regain some confidence.

Then, one grenade after another was thrown at the zombies.

Hordes of zombies exploded one after another, appearing to suffer heavy casualties, but the actual number of zombies truly eliminated was not many.

And soon, the Police were in a desperate situation, running out of ammunition and supplies.

Without ammunition, how could humans contend with such undead monsters?

This question lingered in almost everyone's mind.

The exhausted Police could no longer hold out.

Finally, when the commanding Police officer gave the order to retreat, the Police force began to retreat in a panic.

But the zombies surrounding them from all directions made it impossible for their team to move, especially the Civilians caught in their midst, who greatly hampered their movement.

They could have driven away, but that would have been without the burden of Civilians.

And now, they could only rely on their own two feet.

The team moved slowly like an old man shuffling forward.

Suddenly, a Police officer who was changing a magazine was tackled to the ground by a zombie that lunged from the side.

Immediately after, several zombies instantly pounced on him.

The Police officer let out horrific screams, and soon, the sound subsided.

He was the first Police officer to fall, but not the last.

After him, the Police's defensive line finally collapsed.

The outermost Police were engulfed one after another by the zombie tide.

Their screams stimulated the nerves of all survivors, and the immense pressure broke the psychological defenses of many Police.

Some Police began to desperately run towards what they considered safe places, and some even despairingly threw down their guns.

The defensive line was breached, and zombies poured in.

Bulletproof helmets stained with blood reflected the twisted faces of those contorted by terror.

Death was already at hand, and more terrifying than imagined.

Despair and madness made everyone lose hope, and it was at this moment...

The roar of a truck reached them.

A huge truck roared and charged into the tide of corpses, its immense horsepower crushing everything in its path, grinding countless zombies into disgusting pulp.

And when it crashed head-on into a wall, its massive body, turned sideways, completely blocked one side of the street.

The survivors gained a moment of respite, but the situation remained grim.

"Hurry over here, there's a way!" At this moment, a person suddenly rushed out of an alley on one side of the street.

Jill stood there, waving to all the survivors.

As if clutching at the last straw, both Police and Civilians frantically rushed towards the alley, and all order instantly became chaotic.

Jill shouted desperately, but with almost no effect.

On the other side, zombies also followed these survivors.

The truck blocked the path of the zombies on one side, but it couldn't stop the zombies on the other side.

Seeing these zombies getting closer and closer, various strange screams immediately erupted in the crowd.

They frantically pushed the people in front of them, wanting to rush into this relatively safe Sanctuary faster.

However, besides causing greater chaos, they couldn't even move a step forward.

Just then, a loud gunshot suddenly rang out, and then the entire head of a zombie at the very front turned into shattered fragments, convulsing as it fell to the ground.

Then, a tall man rushed out, carrying a car door.

He forcefully smashed the car door into a zombie's face, utterly crushing it into a pile of mud.

At the same time, he wielded a short sword, instantly slicing off the heads of four or five zombies.

For a moment, not even a zombie could stand within a foot of him.

"Those who can still hold a gun, shoot for the head.

Women, elderly, and children go in first; Police, cover the rear!" Zhou Yi shouted, holding the short sword and using the car door as a shield, while his hands never stopped clearing the constantly surging zombies.

One zombie after another fell at his feet.

Even though he was alone, he prevented these zombies from rushing one step further into the alley.

This sight filled people with unexpected joy.

Some Police voluntarily stepped forward, relying on their remaining ammunition to help Zhou Yi clear out these zombies.

Other Police began to desperately maintain order there.

Democracy and freedom were not effective at this time; they used their fists to teach a lesson to those who desperately wanted to rush in, while protecting the elderly, weak, women, and children, allowing them to quickly get into the open door in the alley.

A fragile order was established, and this also became a lifeline for all the survivors there.

Opposing voices were suppressed, panic remained, but their steps could not stop.

Everyone watched tensely the person blocking the front; his efforts concerned the lives of everyone there.

The longer he held out, the greater the hope of survival.

Both Police and Civilians placed their hope in that hero at this moment.

And the hero did not disappoint them.

The crowd gradually disappeared into the escape door, and Zhou Yi and the Police also retreated while fighting.

Soon, he and those covering the rear rushed into the door.

The moment the door closed, everyone let out a long breath.

But before that breath was fully released, the frantic banging from behind the door made their hearts leap again.

This sound told them: this is Hell, and you cannot escape.
