The walk to the west wing felt longer than it should have.
The maid hurried ahead of me, nearly tripping over her own feet as she led the way, while my steps stayed measured and even, skirts whispering softly against the marble floors.
Knights stood farther down the corridor than usual, clustered near the arched entrance, their postures stiff like something important was happening.
Or someone important.
What did he want now?
Nero hummed in my head.
[West wing. Knights. Sudden summons. Ten points says drama.]
You're always betting on drama.
[Because you attract it like a curse attracts peasants.]
I ignored him and stepped past the last turn.
Then I saw him.
Lucien.
I stopped for half a second before continuing forward like nothing had changed.
