Chapter 53 - Chapter 53 – The Weight of Return

The air near the Sand shinobi front still carried the bitter stench of poison.

Rows of Konoha shinobi lay resting inside medical tents, their breathing finally steady after hours of struggle.

Medical-nin moved quietly between them, checking pulses, replacing bandages, and watching for any sign of relapse.

At the centre of it all stood Tsunade.

Her hands were stained—not with blood, but with traces of herbs and medicinal residue from preparing the antidote to Sand Elder Chiyo's poison.

Empty vials lay scattered across the table beside her; each one was proof that she had succeeded in neutralising most of the toxin.

Chiyo's poisons had been neutralised.

At least for now.

Tsunade exhaled slowly, straightening her back as the last batch of antidote was administered.

Her eyes moved across the injured shinobi—

That was when footsteps approached.

A Konoha shinobi halted a short distance away from her, lowering himself respectfully.

"Lady Tsunade," he said, his voice steady despite the exhaustion on his face.

"I have come with an urgent message."

Tsunade turned.

The shinobi stepped forward and held out a sealed letter—marked with the official seal of the village.

Her gaze sharpened the moment she saw it.

The seal belonged to the Third Hokage.

She took the letter, break the seal without hesitation.

As her eyes moved across the contents, the casual calm she wore faded, replaced by a heavier expression.

"…So he's finally calling," she muttered under her breath.

The messenger waited, then spoke again.

"The Third Hokage requests your immediate return to Konoha. He stated that the matter cannot be delayed."

Tsunade folded the letter carefully.

"And?" she asked.

The shinobi hesitated briefly before continuing.

"He also agreed to your condition," he said.

"You are permitted to bring Kato Shizune with you."

That made Tsunade pause.

For a moment, the cries of injured shinobi seemed to fade into the background.

"…I see," she said quietly.

Her eyes shifted toward the ninjas laying inside the tents—most of her mission here had already been completed.

An urgent summons.

The Third Hokage's request.

And a decision she could no longer delay.

Tsunade clenched the letter in her hand.

"Prepare the arrangements," she said. "We leave soon."

She looked toward the nearby shinobi and kunoichi as she spoke.

Because if the Third Hokage himself was calling her back through an official summons—

Whatever awaited her in Konoha could no longer be ignored.

The ANBU shinobi acknowledged her words and departed.

Tsunade remained standing long after the messenger left.

The letter felt heavier than it should have—both in her hand and in her mind.

Konoha.

The name alone pulled memories she had buried deep—too deep—back to the surface.

Faces.

Voices.

Promises that never survived the battlefield.

She had ignored.

As she was using her healing just here

Dozens of shinobi saved by her.

Maybe more, and there gratitude let her ignore those.

And yet, the moment the Third Hokage's order had broken that barrier, that familiar weight returned—the one she had never truly escaped.

Responsibility.

"So you finally decided to drag me back,"

Tsunade murmured, her thumb pressing against the folded edge of the letter.

She knew her sensei well enough to read between the lines.

Urgent matter.Cannot be delayed.

Those words were never used lightly.

Her gaze drifted back toward the medical tents.

The antidote she had created now lay sealed in vials, replicated and ready for distribution.

Chiyo's poison no longer held power over Konoha's shinobi.

She had done what she came here to do.

Then why did her chest still feel tight?

May be because leaving had always been easier than returning.

because Konoha was not just a village for her—it was a graveyard of names she still remembered too clearly.

Dan.

Nawaki.

And so many others.

Tsunade closed her eyes.

If I go back, she thought, those memories will return.

Her sensei would not summon her just to talk.

Not now.

Not when tensions were rising, alliances were made against Konoha, and the village was quietly bleeding at the border.

Her fingers curled slowly.

"And you even agreed to let me bring her…"

she muttered.

That part surprised her more than the summons itself.

Kato Shizune had been—at times—her excuse.

Bringing Shizune meant this wasn't just a visit.

It meant the Third Hokage expected her to stay.

Or at least… to face something she had been avoiding for years.

Tsunade opened her eyes.

There was no fear in them.

Only reluctance—and resolve slowly hardening into place.

"…Damn it, old man," she said quietly. "You never did know how to let people run."

She straightened, rolling her shoulders as if shedding an invisible weight.

Running had kept her alive.

But it had never brought peace.

If Konoha truly needed her—

Then this time, she would go back on her own terms.

And whatever awaited her in Konoha…She would face it.

As Tsunade struggled with the decision to return to Konoha—

In Konoha itself, a far more serious discussion was unfolding.

Inside the Hokage's office, the atmosphere was heavy.

The Third Hokage sat behind his desk, fatigue evident in his face, while Danzo stood opposite him, his expression dark and restless.

The topic had already been discussed for some time, yet Danzo showed no sign of calming down.

"Hiruzen," Danzo said sharply, his voice rising, "don't you understand? This was all an Uchiha plan—a conspiracy."

His fists clenched as his thoughts spiralled further.

"They possess power on this level. They knew we wouldn't allow them to sell such resources freely, so they planned all of this from the start."

The more Danzo spoke, the more convinced he became.

In his mind, the conclusion was already clear.

Hiruzen looked at him steadily.

"So what do you propose we do?" he asked calmly.

"They have the daimyō's permission."

The statement was factual, not defensive.

Danzo's eye narrowed.

"Let me re-establish Root," he said without hesitation.

"I'll use Root Ninja to expose this conspiracy to the clans. Once they understand the truth, they'll realise what's best for them."

His tone was flat.

Certain.

Homura, who had been listening silently for nearly half an hour, finally snapped.

"Danzo, have you still not come to your senses?" he said angrily, turning toward him.

"You're still asking to bring back Root?"

His voice rose as he continued.

"All the clans already know the Uchiha possess those resources," Homura said, pointing directly at Danzo.

"They've already made deals with them. Do you really think they'll listen to you now?"

The room fell silent.

Koharu looked at Danzo coldly and spoke.

"And if we even mention the name Root again," she said, "the clans inside the village will not hesitate for a second. They will turn against us."

Her gaze hardened.

"Your tongue-sealing jutsu is still a taboo in their hearts. Do you truly want to face all the clans and explain your past deeds?" she asked sharply.

"Or was last night's lesson not enough for you?"

As her words settled, Danzo's expression darkened.

He said nothing.

For once, he had been completely cornered.

By the Uchiha.

By the clans.

By the village itself.

Danzo knew the truth better than anyone—

In the eyes of the clans, he was already the villain.

His mind drifted back to the previous night.

He had gone to the Aburame clan compound, intending to secretly recruit members for Root.

He had barely finished speaking before the reaction came.

The moment the clan heard him ask again—ask for their people—

They attacked.

Without hesitation.

Elders.

Active shinobi.

Even those old guys stepped forward.

The Aburame patriarch had not stopped them.

He had simply stood there and watched.

Danzo remembered the blows.

The poison.

The insects crawling over his body as the clan unleashed everything they had held back for years.

If not for Hiruzen and Jiraiya arriving in time—

He would have been beaten to death.

Danzo clenched his jaw in anger.

Hiruzen looked at him and spoke calmly, though there was a warning in his voice.

"It would be best for you to rest for some time," he said. "Do nothing. If you take even a single wrong step now, we will not be able to protect you."

Danzo's eye twitched.

He turned slowly toward Hiruzen—and the other elders.

"You… you will regret this," Danzo said, his voice low and venomous.

"Remember my warning."

Without waiting for a response, he turned and stormed out.

The Hokage office door slammed shut behind him with a loud bang.

The sound echoed through the room—

The silence lingered long after Danzo was gone.

Homura looked toward Hiruzen and spoke in a low voice.

"Danzo will never change," he said. "He will definitely do something. We need to keep an eye on him."

Hiruzen heard him and gave a small nod.

He was well aware of Danzo's habits.

"We can't do anything about his attitude and habits," Koharu said quietly.

"But he wasn't entirely wrong. Everything that happened still feels very much like a Uchiha conspiracy, at least to me."

Hiruzen said nothing.

His gaze remained fixed on the documents laid out in front of him.

After a moment, he spoke.

"What about tomorrow's sale?" Hiruzen asked.

"The Uchiha are selling energy-fasting pills and healing pills. How much do you think the village will receive?"

The room fell quiet once again.

Because this time—

It was about the village.

On polishing & feedback:

I didn't do a final heavy polish on this chapter. If there's any part you didn't understand or felt confusing, please tell me in the comments—specific feedback really helps me improve.\

For friends who feel the chapter was short:

Each chapter is around 1500 words or more, not fewer. If it feels short, that's probably because of dialogue flow and plot pacing—and honestly, I think that's a good thing.
