Dante didn't know how anyone would know about the silver Ether to begin with. For him, it just looked like a random silver energy, but it was always better to be safe than sorry.
So, from their perceptions, Dante was so strong that he could block all of their attacks with either the black magic or some random spells like the silver shield.

And for soldiers like them, severing their own limbs to survive was the most shameful thing they could do.
