Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Orochimaru’s Trial

[As one who bears a mission, it's impossible to lose in a place like this!]

Staring at the phone screen as his character swept through three enemies at full health and finished with an Ultimate Scene, Orochimaru extended his long tongue and licked his own face clean.

This was something he discovered after today's game update — a newly released and rather interesting B-rank ninja.

[Uchiha Sasuke · Cursed Seal]

This ninja could be exchanged with points in Ranked Battles, or bought directly with Gold Coins.

Others might not know, but how could Orochimaru not? The mere mention of the Cursed Seal said it all.

After a brief test run in Ranked, Orochimaru found this ninja's strength decent — not quite on par with High-Class Recruitment units, but acceptable.

Yet that wasn't what caught his attention.

"The Cursed Seal… Sasuke-kun, you truly are destined to be mine!" Orochimaru chuckled.

The lab door swung open — since Orochimaru ate and drank here, it was basically his home — and the one who entered was, unsurprisingly, Yakushi Kabuto.

"Orochimaru-sama, there's new information."

When the game version updated, the story chapters updated as well. Kabuto had immediately gone through the new one.

[Chapter 3: The Chūnin Exam Arc]

After returning from the Land of Waves, Naruto and the others faced the Chūnin Exams. Participants from other villages, including Sunagakure, made their appearance.

There was also the Sound Village. And Orochimaru.

So now the entire ninja world knows, huh… Orochimaru sank into thought.

The Konoha Crush Plan wasn't something conceived on a whim — he had long prepared to ally with Sunagakure, intending to strike during the Chūnin Exams.

But now it had been exposed.

Though the game didn't spell it out, the mere appearance of Orochimaru, the rogue ninja, in Konoha already hinted at the truth.

For Orochimaru, there was joy in knowing Sasuke would one day accept his power — yet frustration at the premature revelation of his plan.

"Forget it. Now isn't the time to stir chaos. Let's put the plan on hold for now." Orochimaru shook his head.

"Yes." Kabuto responded, pushing his glasses and asking, "Then what about Uchiha Sasuke?"

"Sasuke-kun isn't an ordinary person. He'll understand who can grant him the power of revenge," Orochimaru said calmly.

After all, the Konoha Crush Plan had already collapsed ahead of schedule. Though the plan to eliminate the Third Hokage had failed, Sasuke was not someone to give up easily.

The Sharingan…

Ah~~ such beautiful Sharingan eyes!

...

"Hmm hmm hmm~ Itachi-san, looks like Orochimaru has his eyes on your little brother."

"He's just a pathetic failure, clinging to life."

On a cliff outside Amegakure, Itachi stood gazing at the village that seemed forever shrouded in rain.

Kisame was there too, teasing about the latest Ninja Mobile Game storyline.

To be targeted by something as dangerous as Orochimaru — just thinking about it felt slimy and disgusting.

But Itachi didn't seem to care.

"What a heartless brother," Kisame muttered with a grin, then pulled out his phone. "Itachi-san, how about a round of Orochimaru's Trial?"

"Sure." Itachi nodded.

This was the latest event — players had already begun trying it out. Compared to the Duel Arena, it was quite different.

Six players entered a room together. One of them would be chosen as the Red Experiment Subject, while the other five selected ninjas from the pool to use.

It was all random — before entering, no one knew who would become the Red Experiment Subject or which ninjas were in the pool.

Any ninja killed by the Red Experiment Subject would revive as a White Experiment Subject and join that side.

If all ninjas were defeated, the Experiment Subjects won.

If the Red Experiment Subject was killed, or time ran out and some ninjas still survived, the ninjas won.

And there was even a hidden twist...

...

"Oh? Jiraiya's in here too?"

When the [Orochimaru's Trial] match loaded, the Raikage looked at the available ninja pool, a bit surprised.

He hadn't expected the newly released ninja to appear here.

Just as he was about to select, someone snatched [Jiraiya] first.

His face darkened. Faster than me, huh?!

When he tried to pick someone else, he realized [Might Guy] was gone, [Hatake Kakashi] was gone, even [Uchiha Obito · Youth] was gone.

With no choice left, Raikage had to settle for the unwanted [Nara Shikamaru].

Once the game started, Raikage couldn't help but smirk.

The one who picked [Jiraiya] had been selected by the system as the Red Experiment Subject!

The Orochimaru's Trial map had two paths, upper and lower, separated in the middle — the only connections were at the far edges.

Each path had two curtained booths. Ninjas could hide inside, where the Experiment Subject couldn't see them.

Of course, the Experiment Subject could choose to stand there too.

Raikage controlled [Nara Shikamaru], pacing back and forth like the others.

The Red Experiment Subject's fixed spawn was at the top-left corner of the map, and some ninjas were already heading that way.

When Raikage arrived, he saw a grotesque creature — far larger than a normal ninja — thrashing and attacking wildly.

The other ninjas stood at a distance, afraid to approach.

Raikage scoffed and stepped forward, using his second skill to extend his shadow and strike the Red Experiment Subject.

But the next moment, the Red Experiment Subject spread its arms and spewed a scarlet blast forward.

Half of [Nara Shikamaru]'s HP was gone!

"What?!" Raikage was shocked. He substituted and fled, but the Red Experiment Subject chased right after him.

When the Substitute's invulnerability ended, a red whirlwind whipped across the map and struck Raikage in the face.

[Red Experiment Subject defeated Nara Shikamaru]

Raikage: ...

Staring at the now-dark screen and the five-second respawn countdown, Raikage sat in silence.

5,

Boom!!!

The moment Raikage revived as a White Experiment Subject, another office desk was destined to be replaced — and the furniture shop downstairs was probably celebrating.

...

At the Valley of Clouds and Lightning, Killer B was playing on his phone, rapping nonstop as usual.

"The experiment's strong, ninja's weak, once~ half HP, two~ defeat! Don't come close, I'm the boss! Don't run away, or you'll take a loss! Yo~ yo~, if you're chosen, it's luck, if you win, it's skill!"

"Bakayaro! Konoyaro!"

As B controlled the Red Experiment Subject, he noticed one of his earlier victims had revived as a White Experiment Subject — but just stood there motionless, seemingly AFK.

He smirked. "Can't play, loser~ sore loser~ better quit the game, poser~ hmm, goozer!"

He didn't even realize he'd just killed his own brother — and insulted him too.

Watching the panicked ninjas scatter in terror before his monstrous Red Experiment Subject, B felt immensely satisfied.

Everyone feared him, huh? Nice, nice!

Two and a half minutes later…

"Damn sandbag mode! How can the boss of the big experiment not catch up to them?!" B shouted furiously, slamming his phone down.

The Red Experiment Subject's only advantage was its high damage — its mobility, on the other hand, was atrocious.

If the ninjas chose to keep running, the Experiment Subject basically couldn't catch up.

Strictly speaking, teamwork mattered for the Experiment Subject too.

At the start, the Red Experiment Subject needed to kill one ninja quickly to gain an ally, then move on to chase others.

The newly turned White Experiment Subjects were expected to help block routes or at least force out the ninjas' Substitution Jutsu.

Only then could the Experiment Subject team win.

Otherwise, in a one-versus-five situation, unless several ninjas died early, there was virtually no chance of victory.
