Evan Chen recovered quickly, secretly taking some recovery medicine from the system.
The next day, he walked out of the infirmary, much to Nurse Joy's surprise.
The moment he stepped outside and breathed in fresh air free from disinfectant, Evan stretched lazily.
Then he suddenly burst into wild laughter.
"Hahaha! I'm going to become the strongest—HAHAHAHA!"
"Idiot."
A cold female voice cut through his excitement like a bucket of ice water.
"Who are you?" Evan snapped, turning around angrily.
Anyone would be annoyed after having their good mood ruined.
But the moment he saw the woman, he froze.
Standing there was a woman with an icy expression, staring at him like he wasn't worth her time.
Wow, she's so ugly, her face is so dark… not likable at all, Evan complained internally.
"You ignorant brat, you're truly disgusting," the woman—Sabrina—snapped sharply, her expression tightening.
Evan instantly remembered: this was the Psychic Gym Leader, a powerful Psychic user.
He immediately composed himself, trying not to expose any of his secrets.
"Psychic abilities are far more than you can imagine… Chief Trainer of the Alliance," Sabrina said mockingly, as if she already knew what he was thinking.
Her gaze swept across him like knives, making Evan's hair stand on end.
He forced an awkward laugh. "In front of you, everything I said earlier was just a joke. A joke!"
Psychics had always been admired—not only for their powers but also their mental strength and discipline.
And Sabrina's Psychic Gym had earned its reputation purely through strength.
"You. Come with me." Sabrina glanced at Evan, and in the next instant, her figure blurred—and she Teleported, dragging Evan with her.
By the time he regained his senses, Evan was trembling slightly.
He knew Sabrina was strong, but he didn't expect she could Teleport another person with her own power.
How strong do you have to be to do that?
Wasn't she just a Gym Leader? She felt way too powerful.
"You think Gym Leaders are average?" Sabrina said, reading him instantly. "They go easy on beginner Trainers so you can earn badges gradually."
"Most Gym Leaders never reveal their strongest Pokémon. It's an unspoken Alliance rule.
And the closer the Gym is to a beginner town, the more they must hold back."
She didn't even need him to speak—she simply answered the doubts straight from his thoughts.
"Then what's your purpose in bringing me here?" Evan shouted as Sabrina sat down.
"Of course I have a reason," she replied calmly.
"I heard from the higher-ups that you're a genius among this year's newcomers. They want me to train you."
"'Higher-ups'? Aren't you part of the Alliance?" Evan narrowed his eyes.
"Hmph. Since you've gained Professor Oak's approval, you can, like me, gain powerful abilities and walk both paths."
A creepy-looking doll suddenly appeared in Sabrina's hand.
"What are you even talking about? I don't understand, and we're not close, so don't act familiar," Evan said impatiently.
Sabrina raised an eyebrow. "Don't play games in front of me. You can't hide from my eyes."
Damn, Psychic users are so annoying… feels like I'm completely exposed, Evan grumbled internally.
"To be honest, my identity isn't as simple as 'Gym Leader.' The higher-ups told me to give you the badge directly—but I don't believe a brat like you is that amazing."
Sabrina stood up, her tone indifferent.
"The 'higher-ups'… is it my father?"
Evan finally asked what he had been wanting to confirm.
"Evan? Then… naturally, it's him."
A faint trace of mockery flashed in Sabrina's eyes—subtle, but Evan still caught it.
She was lying.
"You want to challenge the Alliance Tournament, right? Then battle me. One-on-one.
If you win, the badge is yours."
"Fine! Bring it on!" Evan snorted.
After realizing she was lying, he didn't bother being polite.
"Come out, Kadabra."
Sabrina didn't waste words; she immediately sent out her Psychic Pokémon.
> Kadabra – Psychic-type
Evolved from Abra.
Emits alpha waves that cause pain to enemies; can cause clocks to run backward and strange images to appear on TV.
Combat Power: 1300
Skills: Teleport, Psybeam, Disable, Psychic, Recover, Confusion, Reflect.
"Strong, as expected," Evan acknowledged.
"But that's fine—my Beedrill and Haunter both have type advantage."
He sent out Haunter.
"Haunter! Show her your power—Dark Pulse!"
Haunter opened with a devastating Dark Pulse, the entire field darkening with Haze.
But Kadabra didn't move. When the attack was about to land—its figure vanished and reappeared elsewhere.
"Teleport… and they're telepathically linked? She doesn't even need to give commands," Evan muttered helplessly.
Kadabra's eyes flashed blue—Haunter froze and was thrown aside by Confusion.
"Damn it, this no-command combat is so unfair," Evan cursed.
"In that case—Haunter! Use Double Team to confuse her, then spread Poison Gas across the field!"
Kadabra Teleported again, easily dodging—
But this time, the field was already covered in poison clouds.
Purple bubbles appeared around Kadabra's body—poisoned.
"You sneaky brat," Sabrina said coldly—rarely speaking, but only to curse.
Kadabra closed its eyes, glowing yellow—Recover.
"Oh come on… Recover? Annoying," Evan muttered.
Kadabra Teleported behind Haunter, eyes glowing again—Confusion.
"Hmph. That's what I was waiting for! Haunter—Grass Knot!"
Thick grass vines burst from the ground, wrapping around Kadabra's legs.
"Finish it! Full-power Dark Pulse!"
With a thunderous blast, Kadabra was thrown out of the field, completely defeated.
"Hmph. Not bad," Sabrina said indifferently.
"I was going to say that if you lost, you'd become my subordinate. But it seems the higher-ups were right about you."
She tossed a badge into Evan's hand.
"Take the badge. And go meet your friend Ash—he came earlier and was completely destroyed."
With that, Sabrina Teleported Evan out of the Gym.
