Chapter 7 - When Wrath Walks In

Judgment usually belongs to the courtroom.

At least, that's what everyone walking into one likes to believe.

Chapter 7 has questions to answer, a verdict waiting, and one very important problem:

Power doesn't always respect procedure.

Welcome to Chapter 7.

-------------------------------------------

A terrible stillness grips the hall.

The air thickens around us, dense with the pressure of a storm gathering directly overhead. Before anyone can move, an ear-piercing note tears through the courtroom from every direction at once.

Pain drives straight through my skull.

Hands fly toward ears across the chamber while warriors buckle beneath the sound. Several drop to their knees as the pitch climbs higher, forcing itself through stone, glass and flesh until even the floor seems to vibrate beneath it.

The Mark of Judgment burns within my eyes.

I called Judgment.

Something has answered.

The tiled floor trembles.

Cracks race outward from the tribunal in branching lines, splitting stone as darkness seeps through them. Thin tendrils rise from the fractures and spread through the air like ink released beneath water.

Then a voice enters the hall.

Calling it a voice feels generous.

The sound crawls through every wall while somehow speaking from inside my own head, carrying an authority that makes the Living Scripture across my skin flare in response.

"Judgment received."

My breath catches.

The darkness at the center of the hall rises.

A figure takes shape within it, immense enough to tower over the tribunal as remnants of ancient robes gather around its body. Threads of faded brilliance still cling to the ruined fabric, suggesting something that once stood in glory before time carved its way through whatever remained.

Its face refuses every attempt to understand it.

Shadow shifts where features should exist, changing whenever my eyes try to settle upon them. Across the rest of its form, unblinking eyes open one after another, each carrying a strange golden light buried within impossible darkness.

The spirit judge has answered.

Every human judge behind the tribunal collapses to their knees.

One clutches his chest as his breath disappears, while another reaches for the bench and misses. The third stares upward at the being standing over him, and the arrogance I saw only minutes ago drains from his face.

The Living Scripture burns hotter across my body.

Then I see why.

The Decree I called moments earlier has appeared across the spirit judge.

My Scripture.

My words.

Except they look different upon it.

The symbols extend beyond the Decree I understand, opening into the same deeper layers I touched within my consciousness. Golden characters move inside larger characters while lines of divine language unfold across the spirit's frame.

I stare at them.

Apparently, unconscious me missed a few lessons.

The spirit judge raises its head.

"Your authority is forfeit."

The sentence enters reality with enough force to make the chamber shudder.

The judges convulse.

Their ceremonial robes begin disintegrating from the hems upward, fabric collapsing into ash before touching the floor. Insignias flare against their chests and vanish beneath bursts of golden fire while every symbol of office surrounding the tribunal dims with them.

One judge opens his mouth.

His voice never reaches us.

Another tries the same.

Nothing follows.

Their authority has been stripped so completely that even their protests have lost permission to exist here.

Gasps move through the courtroom.

Dark-gold symbols form across the judges' foreheads, each mark burning into place while the spirit's countless eyes remain fixed upon them.

"You shall walk among the forsaken, beyond protection and sanctuary."

The Decree moves.

I feel it before I understand what is happening.

Power rushes outward from the spirit judge and spreads through the chamber, passing over warriors, council members and sect leaders with terrifying precision.

It is searching.

Several people begin backing away.

The Scripture finds them.

A man near the rear of the chamber jerks upward as an unseen force lifts him from the floor. Another rises several rows away, followed by a woman who had spent the entire trial sitting quietly among the council scribes.

More follow.

Faces I recognize.

Faces I don't.

People who smiled through meetings, offered advice and stood among those trusted to guide the sect.

The Mark of Judgment changes my sight.

For a fraction of a second, I see what the spirit sees.

Hidden agreements.

Whispered betrayals.

Promises traded behind closed doors.

People protected because someone important owed someone else a favour.

Truth pours through me faster than I can separate one act from another.

My stomach turns.

The spirit judge found corruption because I called it.

Each suspended figure receives the same dark-gold mark across their forehead. Their screams fill the chamber while the Decree strips away whatever protection their positions once offered.

Then the sound disappears.

Their mouths remain open.

Their bodies continue fighting against the invisible force holding them.

The world simply refuses to carry their screams any farther.

The spirit judge turns.

Every eye across its body closes except two.

Those remain on me.

The entire courtroom seems to disappear beneath that gaze.

For one terrible moment, I wonder whether Judgment has finished with them and started with me.

The Flame stirs beneath my ribs.

Warmth spreads through my chest.

The spirit judge inclines its head.

Then its body breaks apart into streams of darkness and gold, every fragment folding into the cracks beneath the tribunal until the final trace disappears.

The fractures seal behind it.

Silence returns to the hall.

I remain where I stand.

That happened because I called it.

The thought carries considerably less triumph than I expected.

Living Scripture continues moving across my arms before slowly withdrawing beneath my skin. The layered glyphs close one after another, golden characters folding inward until my hands look ordinary again.

The Mark of Judgment fades from my sight.

The courtroom does not recover with me.

People stare from benches and aisles while others edge farther away. Whispers begin and die before becoming words, and several warriors avoid my gaze entirely.

I understand why.

I'm currently struggling to look at myself too.

Movement breaks through the stillness.

Jamey crosses the courtroom and reaches Alec first.

He drops beside him without ceremony.

Alec sits hunched near the remains of his restraints, hands covering his face while his shoulders shake beneath breathes, he cannot quite control.

Eric reaches him moments later and stops close enough to offer protection without crowding him.

I follow.

People move aside before I reach them.

I don't know whether they're showing respect or making certain the terrifying woman with supernatural writing has adequate walking space.

Either works.

I lower myself beside Alec.

His hands remain over his face.

"Alec."

His shoulders tighten.

I wrap my arms around him.

Whatever restraint he had left disappears.

He folds against me as a broken sound catches somewhere inside his chest, and I hold him while tears soak through my shoulder. My own throat tightens, although I refuse to let go.

He came into my darkness and asked me to wake up.

I chose him.

Now I understand why his voice sounded like goodbye.

My hand moves slowly across his back.

"I came back."

His fingers closed against my shirt.

"I know."

The courtroom gradually empties around us. Sect leaders leave in subdued groups while scribes gather abandoned documents with trembling hands. Warriors disappear through damaged doors without offering the usual conversations that follow a tribunal.

My team stays.

Eric's team stays.

Several council members remain seated as though standing requires a decision they have yet to make.

Eventually, Alec draws a shaky breath and eases away from me.

"I'm fine."

His swollen eyes rather aggressively disagree.

I look at him.

"You're a terrible liar."

A faint smile manages to reach his mouth.

"Worth trying."

"Barely."

He wipes his face with one hand before looking down at the broken restraints scattered around him.

Guilt returns almost immediately.

I see it before he speaks.

"Alec."

His eyes lift.

"We'll talk about Ryan."

The faint smile disappears.

"You're angry."

"I haven't decided yet."

That earns a surprised breath from him.

"You broke his foot."

His eyebrows draw together. "Everyone keeps mentioning the foot."

"Because nobody understands how you managed it."

Jamey points at him from my other side. "Thank you."

Alec rubs both hands over his face.

"I don't remember."

"That somehow makes it worse," Jamey mutters.

Eric moves beside me and slips an arm around my shoulders. Familiar warmth settles against my side before his lips brush my temple.

For a moment, I allow myself to lean into him.

His presence gives me something ordinary to hold while my mind remains fixed on an ancient spirit judge disappearing through cracks in reality.

When I look up, relief softens his expression.

We survived.

Again.

Apparently, we're making a hobby of it.

"You have to tell me what the hell just happened," he murmurs.

"I was hoping you knew."

His eyebrows rise. "Max, you summoned it."

"That doesn't automatically come with an instruction manual."

Jamey nods solemnly. "She's got a point."

Eric's expression shifts as his attention moves toward the tribunal.

"It looked like something out of prophecy."

His gaze returns to me.

"And after seeing all of that, some of them will still call you dangerous."

The words land differently now.

Alec flinches.

"They said she was possessed." His voice roughens as he looks toward the abandoned benches. "Ryan said what she carries comes from darkness, and people were agreeing with him."

His hand flexes against his knee.

"They'll whisper even louder after today."

Eric's jaw tightens.

"Let them whisper. Power makes people nervous."

His eyes meet mine.

"Divine power terrifies them."

I slip an arm around his waist and rest my head briefly against his shoulder.

"Then they'll have to learn to live with being terrified."

My gaze returns to the tribunal.

Cracks remain across several tiles where Judgment entered the hall.

They saw what answered me.

They watched ancient law strip authority from people who had abused it and expose corruption hidden among those they trusted.

Some will call it divine.

Others will call it evil.

For the first time, I understand that neither response changes what I carry.

The Flame knew me when I reached for it inside my consciousness.

The Living Scripture answered when I chose my people.

Whatever anyone else decides to call me belongs to them.

I know what I chose.

More importantly, the people beside me know who I am.

That will have to be enough.

For now.

My attention returns to Alec.

"Can we leave? This place is giving me increasingly criminal ideas."

Samantha joins us and rests a careful hand on Alec's shoulder.

"We need food, sleep and several hours for Max to explain how she became the spiritual version of Buddha."

I stare at her.

"Why Buddha?"

She considers the question.

"You glowed, delivered judgment and terrified an entire religious establishment."

Jamey nods. "Compelling argument."

"Neither of you knows enough about Buddhism for this conversation."

"That has never stopped Jamey before," Alec murmurs.

His smile is small, but it exists.

I'll take it.

His fingers remain wrapped around mine as he looks toward Samuel.

"Aleesha and her dad need to know they can go home."

Samuel moves closer and rests a hand carefully against his shoulder.

Alec flinches beneath the touch before catching himself.

"We already called Mr. Grant," Samuel tells him. "He knows it's safe."

Relief moves through Alec's face.

"Thank you."

Samuel squeezes his shoulder gently before releasing him.

"We look after our own."

The words follow us out of the courtroom.

----------------------------------------------

Later, I curl into the couch with my head resting across Eric's lap while his fingers trace slow circles along my arm.

After everything that happened today, I should probably be asking questions about the Flame, the Living Scripture or the ancient spirit judge I apparently summoned without receiving so much as an instruction manual.

Instead, Eric's warmth wins.

Sleep pulls me under before I can argue with it.

When I surface again, evening has claimed the windows. Indigo stretches across the sky beyond the glass while the room rests beneath the softer glow of lamps someone must have switched on while I slept.

My phone reads 7:03 p.m.

Eric has shifted beside me during the hours we've been asleep, leaving one arm curled securely around my waist. The sharp awareness he usually carries has disappeared with sleep, softening his features beneath tousled hair and leaving his lips slightly parted.

I study him longer than I should.

After hearing the fear in his voice while I wandered through my own consciousness, seeing him peaceful feels strangely important.

A strand of hair has fallen across his forehead.

My fingers hover above it before curiosity wins, travelling lightly down the bridge of his nose and brushing across his lips.

His breath catches.

Storm-grey eyes open immediately.

His hand closes around my wrist before I can escape.

"Why stop there, young lady?"

Sleep roughens his voice while amusement warms the rest.

Heat races into my face. "I was checking whether you were alive."

His eyebrow lifts. "With my lips?"

"Medical science is constantly evolving."

A quiet laugh leaves him before his attention drops to the hand he is still holding.

The humor disappears.

His thumb moves slowly across the inside of my wrist.

"Max."

Something in his voice makes me look down.

Gold glimmers beneath my skin.

A glyph appears for less than a heartbeat before folding inward again.

My smile fades.

"I didn't call that."

"I know."

His eyes return to mine.

"It's been happening while you sleep."

I stare at him.

"Since when?"

"Since you woke up."

That lands harder than I expect.

The Flame stirs beneath my ribs with the quiet warmth I've begun to recognize, while somewhere deeper the Living Scripture seems to shift beneath my awareness.

Eric studies my face.

"What happened to you while you were unconscious?"

I could tell him about the endless Scripture.

About touching glyphs containing worlds of meaning inside themselves.

About the Flame standing before me as though it had been waiting for the day I finally learned how to see it.

I could tell him that something inside me opened and I'm beginning to suspect it never closed again.

Instead, my fingers curl around his.

"I met something."

Concern sharpens his expression. "Something?"

I feel warmth gather beneath my ribs.

"Someone might be more accurate."

His eyes narrow.

"Max."

"It's complicated."

"Your definition of complicated usually ends with property damage."

I smile despite myself.

"This time the property damage came later."

His expression tells me that answer has helped absolutely nothing.

I lean against his chest.

"I'll tell you everything. We need to speak to Mr. Grant first."

His arm closes around me again, although his attention remains on the wrist where the glyph disappeared.

"You're changing."

The words quiet something inside me.

I already know that.

Hearing Eric say it makes it real.

Beneath my ribs, the Flame quietly agrees.

--------------------------------------------------

By the time we head downstairs, the house has changed with it.

Food, sleep and several hours without something trying to drag anyone through another dimension have done remarkable things for morale. Alec looks more like himself, although exhaustion still lingers around his eyes, while Jamey has apparently recovered enough to become everybody else's problem again.

I'll take that as progress.

We keep the explanation simple for Mr. Grant.

He hears about the immediate danger, the tribunal and enough of what happened to understand that Aleesha is safe. Ancient entities, dimensional rifts and the deeper mysteries of my increasingly complicated supernatural existence can wait until the man has had considerably more tea.

Aleesha requires far less explanation.

Her eyes meet mine across the room.

Something has changed there.

I saw it before, although everything happening around us left little room to understand it. Now the certainty is unmistakable.

She belongs with us.

Her journey has already begun.

Eventually, we agree on something that feels almost revolutionary.

Rest.

Alec needs time to recover. Samantha and Samuel have drained themselves repeatedly. Eric's team looks as though sleep has become a distant childhood memory, while my own body has apparently spent the last few days being rebuilt from the inside.

A week becomes the suggestion.

Someone argues for two.

For once, nobody proposes charging directly toward the next catastrophe.

We will recover, rebuild and give Aleesha time to understand the world she has entered.

I look around the room at the people sprawled across couches and chairs, listening as conversation drifts between them.

Something loosens inside my chest.

We made it.

For the first time in what feels like forever, safety seems possible.

The illusion lasts only seconds.

The front door caves inward beneath a violent impact.

Every conversation dies.

A second blow strikes before anyone reaches their feet, driving the frame deeper into the wall as cracks race through the surrounding timber.

Alec rises beside me.

Jamey snatches the nearest flowerpot from the side table, glances once at the perfectly innocent plant still living inside it and apparently decides sacrifices have to be made. Samantha and Samuel move together on instinct while Eric crosses the room in two strides and places himself between me and the entrance, his entire body sharpening for whatever waits beyond it.

The third impact shakes dust from the frame.

Then a voice reaches us through the damaged door.

"You dare banish them?"

Cold slides through my stomach.

I know that voice.

"You stand before our leaders, strip them of everything they earned and expect to walk away untouched?"

The atmosphere inside the house changes.

Darkness gathers along the corners of the room and begins stretching across the walls, thin shadows reaching toward us as though drawn by the hatred outside.

Eric glances over his shoulder.

His eyes find mine, and the muscle along his jaw tightens before his attention returns to the damaged door. His shoulders shift subtly in front of me, widening the barrier of his body as though the accusation itself has given whatever waits outside one more reason to stay there.

The voice rises beyond the entrance.

"You used forbidden power against them. You mocked divine law and brought cursed Scripture into a place built to uphold it."

Heat rolls beneath my ribs.

The Flame heard that.

Gold flickers along the inside of my wrist, revealing the edge of a glyph before disappearing beneath my skin again.

Cursed Scripture.

My fingers curl slowly against my palm.

Hours ago, I stood within my own consciousness surrounded by Living Scripture stretching farther than sight could follow. I touched glyphs layered with meanings I could barely comprehend and met the Flame waiting among them with an age my mind still cannot measure.

Judgment answered those same words.

It entered the tribunal, stripped corruption bare and exposed truths hidden beneath titles, robes and carefully guarded authority.

The voice outside carries no uncertainty.

Whoever stands beyond that door believes every accusation.

My stomach tightens as the truth finally finds its shape.

They witnessed Judgment and chose the explanation that frightened them least.

Calling me evil costs them nothing.

Accepting they might have been wrong costs them everything.

"We know what you are, Max."

The use of my name sends Eric's shoulders rigid.

"And soon everyone else will know."

I rise behind him.

Alec moves to my left while Jamey closes the distance on my right. Across the room, both teams fall naturally into formation as the darkness continues spreading.

The voice beyond the entrance lowers.

"You took everything from them."

Pressure builds against the damaged door.

"Now we take everything from you."

The frame explodes.

Wood tears across the entrance hall as the remaining door crashes inward and figures pour through the opening. Dark cloaks whip behind them while corrupted energy burns through their eyes, staining the air around their bodies with something rancid enough to turn my stomach.

Eric's power ignites in front of me.

Alec answers beside him.

My Living Scripture begins moving beneath my skin.

These aren't the judges Judgment condemned.

These are the people who still believe in them.

Warriors who heard the accusations against me, witnessed what answered my Decree and walked away convinced that I was the corruption.

The first attacker raises his weapon.

The Flame rises beneath my ribs.

Heat rolls through me as gold begins threading across my arms, and something almost amused brushes through the connection between us.

Oh, good.

Apparently, the Flame is offended too.

We asked for a week.

We got seven minutes.

I look at the men who just broke into my home.

Seven minutes was plenty.

Chapter 7 ended badly for anyone hoping things might calm down.

Unfortunately for them, Max isn't finished.

Chapter 8 deals with the fallout, and after what happened in that courtroom, there are questions that cannot be ignored much longer.

Feel free to share your thoughts and theories in the comments.

And perhaps spare a thought for anyone foolish enough to kick down that door.
