Silence filled the tiny elevator, the kind that buzzed right before an explosion.
"HOW THE FUCK DID YOU GET THAT FLAT?!" Karl roared, his voice echoing like the frontman of a heavy metal band unleashing a metal scream.
By then, Kaija had gathered enough experience to foresee it. Her hands slapped over her ears just before impact, waiting until the roar and curses were over.
Once Karl ran out of breath, her hands spread in a small, helpless gesture.
"Well, you'll have to ask our boss about this little arrangement," she said. "I was deeply shocked too when I found out."
The elevator dinged at 19.
Karl stormed out, heading straight for his flat, still fuming.
"Hey, wait up," Kaija called, chasing after him while lugging the giant bear behind her.
After five chaotic minutes of Karl struggling to reach his keycard, they finally got inside.
