Chapter 646: The Corpses of the Gods (2)
The God-Demon Battlefield
On the vast, boundless plain, the ground was littered with craters and kilometer-long gashes—clear signs of slicing by sharp weapons. Perhaps due to having absorbed divine blood, there was no sign of life; the surroundings were dead silent. Only occasionally could one hear low growls in various bizarre tones.
The gray mist in the air was not ordinary water vapor but a special substance formed by different energy factors blended with divine power and dust. It not only blocked sight but also shielded sensory perception.
Luke tried the radio, but he couldn't pick up any signal.
"What an eerie place. It gives me the chills."
Just as he spoke, a monster with five legs rushed out of the mist, its wide mouth dripping with putrid fluids, looking terrifying.
As Clark prepared to move, Adam charged first, landing a punch on the monster's head. The next second, a powerful force rebounded through his arm, sending him staggering backward.
How is that possible?
Adam's pupils contracted in disbelief. The aggressor was repelled.
"Ugly thing, die!"
Ashamed and enraged, Adam took a deep breath and spewed a massive fireball.
The monster swatted the fireball away with one hand. It opened its mouth and let out an earth-shattering roar. The sound spread like a tidal wave, creating visible energy ripples in the air.
Adam couldn't withstand the force, spat up blood, and was sent flying far away.
As the former Dragonhold City Lord, he couldn't even withstand a single blow from this monster. The power level of the God-Demon Battlefield was simply too high!
Diana raised her shield, absorbing the sonic attack. She then created an energy blast and slammed it into the monster's chest.
Boom!
A shockwave rippled through the surroundings, kicking up a cloud of dust. When the dust settled, the monster still stood intact. Although its flesh was rotting and some bones were exposed, its strength and defense were ridiculously high.
The heroes' expressions grew serious. To encounter such a monster right after entering the battlefield was extremely unlucky.
Diana was about to attack, but Clark beat her to it.
"I'll take this one!"
Before his words faded, his body shot forward like a cannonball, slamming into the monster. The creature was flung into the air, rolling for hundreds of meters before stopping. Before it could regain balance, a sonic boom ripped through the air near its head.
Boom!
Clark struck its head with his full strength, like a meteorite crashing from above.
Crack!
The sound of cracking bone echoed. Under the force of the punch, the skull repeatedly caved inward, finally separating from the body and flying off.
Now headless, the creature became even more frenzied, flailing its limbs and creating hair-raising sonic screams.
This thing's strength was comparable to Diana's.
It took a full two minutes for Clark to end the fight.
Even ripped into quarters, the monster still hadn't lost its life force. Its limbs twitched occasionally, like the severed tail of a snake.
Luke examined its body structure. The more he looked, the more shocked he became. If his guess was correct, these limbs were the corpses of Gods. Two of them looked familiar and were very likely from Earth Gods.
Diana also noticed this, pointing at a hand bone on the ground.
"Why does this feel like a Human bone?"
"You're not wrong. It is indeed Human."
Luke dropped the bone, stood up, and surveyed the surroundings. Spotting a hill nearby, he strode toward it. Just as he was about to dig into the mound, a desiccated hand bone shot out like an arrow toward Luke's throat.
Luke snorted coldly, shifted from solid to ethereal, evading the attack. He then reverted from ethereal to solid, grabbed the creature's neck, and dragged it out of the mound.
This was a spider-like monster. Its six legs were composed of the hands and feet of different creatures. Its head was severely decayed, with only blackened skin and flesh remaining, but even so, the outline of a Human brain was visible.
Diana frowned.
"Look at its head and right leg."
"Human!"
J'onn was perplexed. Clark examined it closely and gave the same answer.
"It really is Human. Why would there be a Human corpse in the Underworld?"
"I suspect it belongs to a God among the Humans."
Green Fire erupted, incinerating the monster's residual soul. Luke tossed the corpse aside and said with a serious expression, "The strength of these corpses is beyond that of ordinary people. If I'm not mistaken, they are the Gods of ancient Earth."
Diana asked, confused, "Why would Earth's Gods be fighting in the Underworld?"
"Who knows?"
Luke sighed lightly. He began to understand why the Gods had disappeared. Encountering the remains of a Human God so soon after entering the battlefield suggested how many Gods from the Human World were buried across this region.
The God-Demon Battlefield was a Gods' Graveyard.
Due to the mist and magnetic fields, the four heroes lost their sense of direction immediately upon entering the battlefield. Afraid to split up, they chose one direction and continued forward.
Along the way, they were assaulted by over a dozen monsters, all easily subdued by Clark.
Adam grew increasingly reverent of the heroes. In the God-Demon Battlefield, even Death Gods had to tread carefully. Who dared to charge through recklessly?
After walking for about an hour, a giant pit, over two kilometers in diameter, appeared before them. The pit was bottomless, and strong air currents brought forth a loud, mournful whistling sound.
Suddenly, the sound of rapid air-breaking filled their ears. A gigantic, bone-wrapped tentacle flew out of the pit. Its tip bloomed like a flower bud, revealing mucous-covered fangs and a constantly writhing mouth.
This thing was immense, larger than imagination.
"What is that thing?"
"I've never seen anything like it," Adam replied, his scalp tingling. He had lived his whole life in the Underworld and had never heard of such a thing.
"Look there," Diana raised her hand, pointing to the center of the bud. Inside the writhing mouth, a Human woman's head appeared, followed by her naked, mucus-covered upper body.
"Save me, please!"
"It hurts so much! I'm dying! I don't want to die! Please, help me!"
The woman opened her mouth, letting out a mournful cry. She was speaking Ancient Egyptian. Clark and the others didn't understand, but Luke heard it clearly.
"What is she shouting?"
"She's calling for help."
Calling for help?
The heroes were stunned, unable to figure out what was happening.
"She's speaking Ancient Egyptian, a language thousands of years old."
Diana hesitated. "Is she Human?"
"Perhaps."
Luke lowered his head, his eyes glowing with green light. When he saw the massive soul lurking deep underground, his mouth twitched violently.
"Go! Get out of here quickly! Don't pay attention to her! There's something far more terrifying at the bottom of the pit!"
Clark hesitated, but ultimately said nothing. The woman cried out mournfully, like a mother calling for her child. When she realized the group was ignoring her, her appearance violently changed, and she let out an angry shriek.
The shockwave blasted the mist away. The tentacle shot out of the deep pit, rushing toward them with terrifying pressure.
"Stay! My Human kin, and merge with me!"
Before the tentacle even reached them, the wind pressure it created threw the heroes into the air. Clark, J'onn, and Diana quickly flew away. Luke shifted from solid to ethereal, melting into the soil. Only Adam, who was grazed by the tentacle, had his right shoulder ripped open. His body flew backward, violently slamming into a rock.
A searing pain shot through his internal organs. He felt like he was going to die.
