Chapter 251: The Intricate and Confusing Situation
The Death of Director Harvey
Jack Harvey is dead!
Luke learned the news while eating breakfast. Initially, he didn't believe it, thinking it was just a ruse to deceive him. Soon, however, he realized the truth.
He was truly dead. The stubborn old man who had served as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for thirteen years was gone, just like that!
The world truly is full of surprises!
Luke sighed and headed to the hospital.
Many people came to the hospital to offer their condolences, including political figures from both parties and members of Congress. People expressed their grief over the sudden passing of the old man. Upon inquiry, Luke learned the cause of death was officially ruled as a sudden myocardial infarction (heart attack). Luke merely shook his head at this diagnosis and offered no comment.
Jack Harvey had one son, Byrne Harvey, who worked in banking, and one daughter, Molly Harvey, an environmentalist.
After leaving the hospital room, both children were fighting back tears as they greeted visitors. When it was Luke's turn, Byrne took out a letter and placed it in Luke's hand in front of everyone.
"Father said that if he died suddenly, I was to give this letter to you. He also said he was counting on you for the rest."
Luke was stunned. Realizing the strange looks he was receiving from the crowd, he cursed the old man for trying to rope him into trouble even in death. However, in front of the witnesses, he could only accept the envelope with a sorrowful expression and promise that he wouldn't disappoint the old man.
After the forensic examination found no other issues, the body was sent to the funeral home, and the visitors began to disperse.
Luke returned to his car and opened the envelope. He burst out laughing when he saw the blank sheet of paper inside. He tossed the envelope out. Just as he was about to drive away, two people appeared in front of him: Stavros and Maeve.
Luke frowned. "You two should be at the funeral home right now, not here looking for me."
Stavros walked up to the car and said heavily,
"We want to talk to you."
Luke thought for a moment, then opened the car door.
"Get in."
The BMW pulled out of the parking lot and stopped on a secluded street.
"What do you want to talk about?"
Maeve clenched her jaw and said bitterly, "How did Director Harvey die?"
"The autopsy report says sudden myocardial infarction, natural causes."
"Bullshit!"
Maeve swore. "His health was excellent! He had no history of heart disease. How could he suddenly suffer a heart attack? Tell me, who killed him?"
Luke glanced at Maeve, then looked at the gloomy-faced Stavros, and couldn't help but chuckle.
"You're not suspecting that I did it, are you?"
"Director Harvey was attacked after he had dinner with you last night. Based on the case facts, you are the prime suspect."
Luke shook his head with a cold smile. "In truth, you already know the cause of his death. You're only here because you're upset and want confirmation. I can forgive your grief, but don't use this kind of accusation as an excuse. Otherwise, don't blame me for being impolite."
Stavros said flatly, "We want the answer from your mouth."
Luke was silent for a moment, then nodded slightly.
"Yes. Jack Harvey died because of the Swamp Forest case. I won't name the killer, and there's no need to pursue it. The case is over. Before long, you'll have a new Director and a new life."
"You two, please get out. Our conversation is finished."
Stavros didn't move, and neither did Maeve. Her face was slightly contorted, filled with anger and murderous intent.
Seeing their resolve, Luke couldn't help but marvel. Although the old man was short-tempered and resorted to underhanded methods, he certainly had commendable skill in managing his subordinates.
"Do you have anything else?"
Maeve looked at her partner, her eyes determined. Stavros took a deep breath and spoke slowly,
"The plan Director Harvey devised was only known to the two of you. Now that he's gone, you are the only one left who knows about it."
Luke raised an eyebrow. "You want the plan from me."
"No!"
Stavros stated firmly, "The fewer people who know about this, the better. The purpose of our visit isn't the plan itself, but how to ensure it proceeds smoothly. Director Harvey cannot have died in vain. That person must pay the price."
As he spoke, both of their expressions were resolute, indicating they had thought this through.
Luke was momentarily tempted. Jack Harvey's death was irrelevant, but his subordinates were talented. If he could bring them under his banner...
After a few seconds of deliberation, he ultimately shook his head. How could a group of FBI agents work for a crime boss?
"I understand what you mean. I truly envy Harvey for having such loyal subordinates. However," his tone changed, becoming serious, "the agreement between him and me was personal. With his death, the agreement is naturally void. What you do is your own decision. I will not interfere."
Maeve anxiously pleaded, "Mr. Shaw, please consider this carefully. Since that person dared to strike at Director Harvey, who can guarantee you won't be the next target? Don't forget, you were also involved in the Swamp Forest case. He won't let you go."
Luke gently shook his head. "What you say makes sense, but you overlook the crucial point: the core of the entire plan was the Director of the FBI and the power he wielded. Without that, none of it is worth discussing."
"The Director is dead, but we are still here. We can help."
"You?"
Luke let out a hollow laugh, a flash of disdain in his eyes. He said no more and opened the car door.
"You two, please exit."
Maeve and Stavros were frustrated. They exchanged a look and reluctantly got out.
After watching the BMW drive away, Maeve immediately burst into anger.
"What did he mean by that? A deserter! He's despicable! And I actually trusted him before!"
Compared to the agitated Maeve, Stavros was much calmer. Carefully considering their conversation, he conceded,
"He's not wrong!"
Maeve was furious. "You're going to be a deserter too! Don't forget who rescued you from the KGB! Without the Director, you wouldn't be who you are today."
Stavros said helplessly, "Calm down, alright? Can you let me finish?"
"Don't forget, we are dealing with the President, and we have no evidence. Before, with Director Harvey's protection, we could investigate freely. Now, it's different. He's dead, and the Director position is vacant. The person who gets to choose the next Director is the very person we were investigating! In this situation, the higher-ups will be too busy kissing the President's ass to dare continue the investigation."
Maeve gritted her teeth at his words but knew he was right.
Stavros sighed. "Luke Shaw realized this, which is why he was so eager to wash his hands of the whole thing."
Maeve demanded, "But he's a person who knows the truth! He knows Joel Nash's real identity, better than we do! How can he stand by and watch a demon become our leader?"
