Lu Yuze crossed the room and carefully laid Yuyan on her bed, adjusting pillows and pulling the blanket up to her shoulders. He checked her pulse one more time before stepping back.
Shuyin carried the sleeping five-year-old to his new bed and settled him carefully, removing his shoes and tucking the blanket around his shoulders. His small hand curled against the pillow as he made a soft sound before settling completely.
They stood there for a moment, looking at the two children sleeping peacefully. She turned toward the door when suddenly a hand gripped hers with firm pressure.
"What's the matter?" she asked, trying to pry her hand away.
"Just follow along," he said, his voice carrying roughness that hadn't been there moments ago.
He pulled her out of the room, closing the door quietly behind them, then immediately began dragging her down the hallway toward the master bedroom with urgency that bordered on desperate.
