His phone was buzzing in the plastic bag with his personal effects. Yueling, probably. Calling to ask where he was, why he hadn't arrived at the hospital yet. The thought of her made his chest tighten with something that might have been guilt or fear or both.
What would he say to her? How could he explain this?
